Family history research has led me to the Pybus family in Leeming who were blacksmiths. Trying to fit a Hannah Pybus into the picture who was born in Leeming in about 1805 and whose father is Thomas Pybus - farmer.

William Pybus, Chester-le-Street, c 1800

My ggg-grandfather Joseph Simons was married on 1st January 1792 to Hannah Vazie in Chester-le-Street by licence, by J Harman, according to a photocopy of the Bishop's Transcript. Witnesses Ann Vazie, Wm Vazie, Wm Pybus. A William Pybus was a saddler in Chester-le-Street 1798 British Universal Directory - too good a coincidence? Does any one know anything about this William Pybus? I am trying to put some flesh on the bones of the life of Joseph Simons and any connections might well help. I believe that Vazies, Simons and Pybus were involved in the local militia cavalry.

This is probably way out of date but have you checked the 1881 census records. I have a John (Clifford) Pybus born 1836 married Catherine Brady born 1840 in Ireland with William 1867 in North Shields, John 1870 Ireland and James 1877Ireland. His occupation was Sailor, not quite a Sea Captain but ir could be the same one.
Cherry

The information posted on this thread should also be posted on the PYBUS Group Website. I have posted a family tree up there that I recently received from a cousin, it starts with Thomas Pybus 1622, and his wife Margaret. Frederick Pybus and Elizabeth Ann Hodgson are also on it. Through this tree Debbie Midenstein and I have discovered we are 4th cousins, twice removed.

Hi Joe
I don't have any links to PYBUS, just a few records of this name from the Well Parish records.
I note in the 1881 census the following which I believe to be the same ancestry line:
Dwelling:	Well
Census Place:	Well, York, England
Source:	FHL Film 1342173 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 4872 Folio 69 Page 6
Marr	Age	Sex   Birthplace
John PYBUS	M	59 	M	Well,
Rel:	Head
Occ:	Shoemaker
Mary A. PYBUS	M	49 	F	Well,
Rel:	Wife
George PYBUS	U	20 	M	Well,
Rel:	Son
Occ:	Ag Lab
John PYBUS	 	13 	M	Well,
Rel:	Son
Occ:	Scholar
Frederick PYBUS	 	11 	M	Well,
Rel:	Son
Occ:	Scholar
Alfred PYBUS	 	8 	M	Well,

There is a baptism record of a John 10 March 1822, I think this fits well. His parents George and Mary. His death 07 July 1891 aged 69 at Almshouse Well. He had many siblings which I can add if required.
A record of George baptism 29 July 1792 (death 22 April 1866 age 73) parents William and Mary. George is listed as a cordwainer, which I think is a shoemaker.
Hope this is useful
Regards
Johnson was their mothers surname at birth, it was later changed to Mallaby on her mothers marriage to a Peter Mallaby. Hutchinson was their paternal grandmothers maiden name.

Re: Isabella Eleanor Pybus - married 1876 Whitby

Okay, so I paid the fee to access census data and tracked down Isabella. Virtually certain she's my great-grandmother.

1871 Census - Egton, nr Whitby
***********************************
Husband = John Pybus b. 1825 Lythe, Yorks – Farmer (employing 1 labourer)
Wife = Lucy M  b. 1829 Aislaby, Yorks
Son = Frances b 1853 Sleights
Dau = Isabella b 1851 Sleights
************************************

This explains great-aunt Lucy Annie's name, and grandad being John Francis.

Isabella was one month old at the Census so was fibbing when she later claimed 1853. She and husband James were still in Stockton running the grocer shop in 1901.

Love to hear of any links.

I'm trying to trace the background of Eleanor who married James Bryce in Whitby in 1876. The only Eleanor on the Marriage Register for the same time and place is Isabella Eleanor Pybus.

They lived in Stockton where they ran a grocers (he'd been a tea salesman). In the 1981 census James' wife is recorded as Eleanor born in Sleighton. No such place exists, and I assume he meant 'Sleights' , which is close to/part of Eskdaleside where James' father was blacksmith.

They had three children (that I know of) - Janet, Lucy Annie and John Francis (my grandfather).

Hi Phillip, Very little info George Pybus was the station master at Hensall, his first wife was called Dinah, George was 36 in 1861, their children were William, James,Thomas, Jane, Mary, and George. In 1871 George was a widower. Their son Thomas born 8 May 1854 died 12 november 1880 aged 26, he is burried in Hensall Church yard. George married Jane Motherby who is my g/g/g/grandmother they had two children Edwin Pybus Motherby born 1874 and Ernest Pybus born 1880. Janes first husband was Henry Motherby. Hope this is of some help, I have just started this line, I was in Hensall a couple of weeks back and found the graves. George and Jane did move to Southport area where I assume they died.
