Origin of 'Qualls' name

My husband's mother had the maiden name "Qualls." Her family was from Arkansas. Anyway, my question is this: does anyone know what ethnic origin the name "Qualls" comes from? Some of my husband's family have theorized that it has ties to the Quallah branch of the Cherokee Indians. Is this correct? Does anyone know? Thanks!
