I would be interested in doing a DNA study of the early settlers in Perry County, TN including the Barber, Trull, Hilburn, Kilpatrick, Dowdy, Campbell, Baucom, Sharp and Qualls. Donna, if you have access to ancestry.com, I can share my posted Qualls family tree with you. Then lets see how we would want to work on the DNA lines

Lena was born in I believe Covington County Ala. in 1894.
Her dad was named Annah, and her mom was Sallie.
She had three sisters,Minnie,Ola,and Lissie. She also had
four brothers,Hilton, Johnie, Palmer,and Roy.
In 1910 they lived in Copperas Head, Covington Co. Ala.
My grandmother was also a Qualls. I'm sure my grandmothers grand dad,Levi, and Lenas' dad are related but I haven't found out how just yet. They all live in the same area at the same time.
My dad {now deceased} always told us his grandfather was a full blood cherokee indian. I dont anyone believed him for a long time. His name was Estle Qualls, his dad was Jesse Qualls, from Arkansas. This has bugged me for years, wish I had questioned him more. Any information on the name Qualls relating to the Cherokee indians would be very much appreciated.

I'm not sure if we would be related or not, but there seem to be an awful lot of similarities. My grandfather is named Mentral Qualls, and he grew up in Arkansas with deaf parents. He had a sister named Irene and several other siblings that I don't know the names of. Irene recently passed away and I believe was living in Colorado for many years. I know my grandfather raised his children in California and he had family in other states.I have never learned who my father's (Mentral's son) birth mother is and would really like to find out, though she is not a Qualls. They may or may not have been married at one point. My father has 3 siblings.

He served under a General during the War Of 1812. The General and him went to LA. I beleve it was the LA. Purchase. As many know it covered a lot of land. Try the 1800`s census Coon Creek TN.
Our family has always told that one of the family members was a soldier who went to remove the Cherokee from their land. He married an Indian girl and as a result she and her family did not have to go west with the others.
1900 Halton, Covington County, Alabama
Qualls
Green, head, 59, 8-1840, marr 11 yrs, Ala., Ala., Ala.
Millie S., wife, 30, 5-1860, 5 children 5 living, Ala., Ala., Ala.
Brock, son, 10, 8-1889, Ala.
Winnie R., daughter, 9, 3-1891, Ala.
Cleona, daughter, 6, 6-1893, Ala.
Mary Jane, daughter, 4, 5-1896, Ala.
Pollie S., daughter, 6 months, 11-1900, Ala.
*note - I believe Pollie's date of birth should really be 1899 as the census was taken before 11-1900 (her stated birth date)

1910 Lakewood, Walton County, Florida
Green, head, 64, 1st marr., marr 41 yrs., Ga., US., US
Fronie, wife, 61, 1st marr., marr 41 yrs., 9 Children 6 Living, Ala., Ga., Ala., US, US
Brock, son, 20, Ala.
Mary Jane, daughter, 13, Ala.
Souannah, daughter, 10, Ala.
Minnie Lou, daughter, 4, Florida
*Note - I'm sure this is the same family, as the kids names match up BUT Green has only age 5 years and his wife has a different name and is 31 years older. I believe this might actually be a "second" wife (enough they both say it is a 1st marriage and that they have been married 41 years.) But then again who knows

Alabama Deaths
Green Qualls, Covington Co., January 1929
Florida Deaths
Millie S. Qualls, Walton Co., 1951

I'll look for more tomorrow, as I have to get to work now.
Hope this will hold you until then.

Re: A Qualls by any other name...

janice, much of what is written thus far is true. However, with some research you'll find there were 3 clans from the Brittish Iles. One from the Ile of Man, whose surname came from the bird, so they indicate; second from Ireland, of which the surename comes from MacQuall; third was mentioned earlier from Norfolk. As to your family specifically, I don't have any information.
Connie, our family's are the same. Joeseph is my greatgreatgrandfather. His father moved to Evening Shade from the Cumberland Mt. region in the early 1800's.
