My research since 2003 has suggested the following:

--Quantrill's mother was an orphan.
--She was born in the vicinity of Beaver Falls, PA and raised by the Beaver Falls Presbyterian Church.
--Many Clarkes became Clarks to avoid association with him.
--He attacked the town of Lawrence, KS after he felt the people there disrespected and insulted him one time too many. (He obviously suffered from mental illness, too.)

If either of you can contact that Church and try to find more information, please let me know what you find out!
Sincerely,
Dawn Clark(e)
emilyd63@yahoo.com

Hi Barbara,
They were from Tottington. With help from a local historian we have traced them back to Thomas Quantrill (b. 1765) and Margaret Towler, however before that it gets a little hazy. Does this information coincide with any you have?
Be gratefull for any help at all!!

I have studied and researched William Clarke Quantrill for some 15 years.Mostly about his life after History claimes he died.
WCQ had a sister Mary. She may have died after civil War. She may have been a widow of a Hickman that was war death.
In C.C. Quantrill's travels with W.W.Scott @ 1888 seeking what really happened to her son, SHe told a news reporter that she only had one son living. I don't know where this meant totally1 Child or 1 Son ( nothing about daughters).
Over time I recieved E mails from reporteded Quantrill family. This is really hard for me to swallow UNLESS it was cousins ETC./ ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE as directly from WCQ his brothers or sisters!!!! He only had 4 neices I could find and naturally they wouldn't have carried on the Quantrill name.
In some information I also heard that Mary simply sat around and quilted after the death of her husband. This also seems unlikely since Quantrill had a photo of Mary Hickman on him when captured.
I wonder how I could get some info on the Goodfellows home C.C. Quantrill died in??? Is she buried in DOver Oh

Shirley, I'm sorry if I didn't send you this! I recieved about 50 to 100 e mails a day and they were hard to sort back then. I recently recieved one on Carrie Belle Younger? Quantrill?Crocker? from Arkansas.
Search Quantrill message board--
I had recieved info about a grave in Cotton Plant Arkansas close by where Ms Gabie Crocker lived. Mrs Crocker was a Missouri Younger ( sister to bob jim cole) she was married to a man who claimed to be L. J. Crocker-- He wasn't! He was William Clarke Quantrill! Reported time of death 1918 it was believed/ told in lawsuits that she moved back to Missouri, later died and buried by Younger family in Lee Summit.
I found a death Cert finally, because it was misfiled and forged because of lawsuits. She died in Dec 1917 on 17th or 18th. I have been trying to find if this grave was that of Ms Gabie. While it was rumored she was Sarah Sarahann Sallie Younger, she well could have been another of the sisters????
I stopped the other e mail service long ago and that have been why I missed this responce years ago.... Please feel free to e mail me Dave K.

Hi David!!!
Sorry for the late response to your post of 4/25/05 - I've been offline for a while & just now discovered it.
Sounds like the grave you are referring to is not related to my Carrie Bell Quantrell.
I DO believe my Carrie Bell Quantrell had some connection to the Youngers (as I believe I have previously mentioned) due to the fact that she kept a newspaper clipping regarding Cole Younger's amnesty throughout her lifetime. (I now posess that newspaper clipping) As well as the family info regarding the proximity of residence, names, (Including Charles Quantrell) etc, which my family had with WC's family, so I am, as always, very interested in whatever your research uncovers.
Kind of interesting, also, that one of the Youngers would use that particular alias.. huh??
Stanford, Norfolk is by Sturston, correct? My Herbert George Quantrill states he was born in Sturston circa 1865. His father was Robert Quantrill, Gamekeeper (in 1889). Other names in family are Frederick Robert Quantrill, Elizabeth Quantrill. I am just beginning to research this branch of the family and if there are any connections even to the place, I'd love to chat!

Many thanks,

Les

Robert Quantrill

Found a bit more on the Quantrill's of Finchley. Herbert Robert Quantrill's father's marriage certificate of Herbert George Quantrill, Butcher, and Isabel Kate Freeman, Parish of St. Martin Kentish Town in 1889. Frederick Robert Quantrill and Elizabeth Quantrill were witnesses, Robert Quantrill was his father and a gamekeeper.

Looks like Herbert George was born in Sturston, Norfolk. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated as I cannot find them in the 1881 census!!
I was saw the same type letter from a g-g-grandaugter of a noted outlaw, who just was not happy that there was interest by fellow members of her family in that aspect of the family. On the other hand there may be nothing to the"CARRIE BELLE YOUNGER?Quantrill?" story. History is an open book and should be read and it is up yo the reader to sort out the chaff. Alan

My Grt Grt Grandmother DID NOT marry into the Younger Family and my family would appreciate it if you would quit spreading this ridiculous rumor! Carrie Bell Quantrell was related VERY VERY distantly to William Clarke Quantrill. When I say distant, we are are talking several generations stemming back to England. Carrie Bell died at a very ripe age, not as a child, and she did marry. There isn't even any proof that Carrie knew WC personally let alone any of his gang. Who is sending you inquiries about my Grt Grt Grandmother?

Thank you for replying. No, I am not related to the Quantrill family. I am a native of Springfield, Ohio where Caroline Clarke Quantrill died in the Odd Fellows Home in 1903. I am also a quilter, writer, and very interested in the 2 women in WCQ's family who ended up being footnotes to history. Also, WCQ's aunt (married to one of his father's brothers) Mary may have been written about in the John Greenleaf Whittier poem "Barbara Fritchie" during the Civil War. Just really beginning to research any connection between quilts and female members of the WCQ family. Any info you might like to share or if you want to forward this on to anyone, please do. Thanks, Connie Ark

How do you know about Mary ? Are you claiming anyway related ?
Are you looking for quilts or graves ?
Mary died in 1865 , Her husband to be, may have served a very short period under Clarke during his original activities. Some blankets and pants were made but most went to support the Confederate Cause.
At the time of his arrest Clarke had a photo of his sister on his person. This was one of the means the Yankees had to identify him.
Mary's death was untimely during the Yankees attempts to unravel the Lincoln assassination.

I have a rather odd question for everyone...

Do you, or anyone in your family, past or present, have an odd ear lobe. I believe the term is double lobbed. I always believed mine was a random birth defect. However, in getting some 1800's photos together to scan & send to someone, I noticed the same lobe on an 1800 Quantrell photo.. Its even the same ear. After noticing this, my children noticed that most of the Quantrell photos are taken from the left side..It is the right ear which is affected both on me and in the photo..

Hope we arent the only ones with this condition. Would love to hear from anyone else who has or has had someone in their family with this occurance.

Hi Dave- we had some short correspondence in this regard back in April & you indicated you were going to get back to me.. Was going thru some 1800's photos to scan & send to someone & it reminded me you were going to tell me about the Carrie Bell(e) Quantrell grave you have found.. I am still quite interested in this, since My great grandmother is the only Carrie Bell Quantrell I am aware of.. I'm also positing a message to everyone due to my photo adventure.. Kind of wierd..
Anyway, please advise of whatever information you have. Oh, by the way, I also located the clipping of Cole Younger's Conditional Pardon.. Its getting quite faded, appears to be from back in Feb 1903.. Guess I'm going to have to try to get it photo copied to keep from losing it..
Please advise of any other Carrie Bell Quantrells
Thanx

David - where did you find a grave for a person of this name??? What years did she live??? and in what part of the country??
My curiosity stems from the fact that I am the great grandaughter of Carrie Bell Quantrell- however, she did not die with the last name Quantrell, as this was her birth name... I have never heard of another one up til now.. As she kept a clipping of Cole Younger receiving amenesty, I do believe she knew him- & my father said her husband said he knew the James boys..
May have no connection at all, but I am curious..
