Do you have any idea what part of Germany that your family was from? My ancestors ( at least some of them) were originally from the Hannover area. I am having trouble tracing them past the first generation in Germany.

Thanks for your reply. I probably should have figured out that were Miriam if I was paying attention. I am far enough into the family tree now (mostly the other side since they go farther back in the US) that I am starting to have troubles remembering all of the facts now. I'll blame it on that.

I have not heard anything about how the Quentins ended up in the Gottingen area. I assume that you have ? I would be interested in hearing more.

hi there,

I AM the Miriam Quentin - I think I had problems locking in some years ago so that's how the second name came about... sorry for confusing you.
I never actually dived any deeper into genealogy than questioning my aunt some weeks ago. She was a good person to question though as she'd kept in touch with all our family ties in the area of Göttingen (remember, my family branch lives further upnorth now) and she also remembers all the names and has quite a few stories to tell.
I have to ask my dad if he remembers his uncles names. I'm pretty sure there were some. I know that his father, meaning my great grandfather, was named Heinrich (who could be - that's if your theory is leading somewhere - your great-great-grandfather). This is quite interesting.

And it isn't such a long shot after all - because, even though there are quite a few Quentin's in lower-saxony, they are all related in one way or the other!

Did anyone ever tell you how the Quentin's ended up in that area?

Nice to hear from you,

kind regards

Miriam

Have you had any contact with the Miriam Quentin that started this thread? I am wondering whether she is still doing the genealogy thing after all these years.

I am trying to locate her because her grnadfather's Oskar Quentin, which matches my great grandfather's brother name and their birth dates are close. Also the fact that both her father and my grandfather are anmed Heinz could indicate a commonly used family name (a longshot I know since Heinz is a common name)

This photo was taken at the Marratt Photo Studio in Detroit, Michigan.

Attached is a copy of the photo. If this is one of your ancestors, please contact me.

I need to clarify my earlier post. Ernst brother's were Richard and Oskar (with a k not a c).

Matilde Witt Quentin died in 1912 (not 1921). He then went to live with his grandmother who had remarried. I believe her new last name was Zimmermann. She had two new step daughtters (or maybe stepgrandaughters) named Hanchen and Lodchen (obviously this is without the umlauts since I can't type that). These names are obviously the familiar nickname version of their real names because of the "chen" ending, as in "madchen".

I came up with a little more info from the family. It appears that my grandfather Ernst Quentin from Hanover had two brothers, Richard and Oscar (maybe not the correct spelling), but don't know whether they wremained in the Hanover area. I believe Ernst and his wife Matilde Witt are buried in a small church graveyard in the Stockner neighborhood of Hanover (according to my dad who looked through the church's grave registry. There were supposedly a number of other Quentins in the book, but this was before digital photos and my dad didn't have his camera with him.

I estimated that Ernst and his brothers were born around the 1880's since my grandfather was born in 1908. Matilde died in 1921, I believe.

I realize that there are a lot Quentins in the Hanover area, but if you happen to come across any info that matches this I would be grateful if you alerted me.

Hi Edith, hope you're still here? You posted this message ages ago....

As I wrote to crashq, the name Quentin seems to be fairly popular in the Göttingen/Hannover area. Unfortunately, it's difficult to trace back our family history any further than like three generations (starting with me!). But I'm hoping that my aunt will come up with something useful. All the connections are bound to round up with just one family, the one that came over from France. It'll be interesting to see how far they have spread.

Kind regards

Hi there, thanks for your reply, I'd completely forgotten about this board....

Göttingen is very close to Hannover. Incidentally, my father's name is Heinz too, but that seems to be a coincidence. I just learned that his grandfather (Heinrich Quentin), born in the 1880ies too, had no less than 10 brothers so who knows... Ernst might have been one of them.

My aunt, who still lives in Göttingen, promised me to pay the local history archive a visit, to find out how and when the name Quentin spread in the area. Unfortunately she didn't know much about my great-grandfather other than the 10 brothers thing and that he worked for the federal railway company, while most of this brothers became either merchants or attempted an industrial career.

I hope she really does pay the history archive a visit. I bet there's a family tree knocking about somewhere. My dad had two sisters who both got married and thus didn't carry the name any further. My dad on the other hand, settled further up north so there's no more Quentin's from our branch of the family tree in the area of Göttingen/Hannover. However, as oppose to the rest of Germany, Quentin is a fairly common name down there.

I'll let you know when she comes up with anything......

kind regards

My family also comes from Germany. I believe they were from Hanover. My great grandfather's name was Ernst Quentin (born in 1880's?). He married a Matilde Witt (1888-1912), also known as Tillie. Their son (my grandfather) was named Heinz Quentin (1908-1990).

Ernst died in World War I. Matilde then remarried and moved to Danzig (now Gdansk). She died in childbirth and Heinz subsequently moved to Rome, NY in 1922 at the age of 14 to live with his aunt, Antonie Witt who later married Gus Schiewe.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about Ernst's parents.

Well Jennifer, I am not sure that our similarites mean we are some how of the same Quentin. See my Great-grandmother(Barbara 1905-1966) was born a Quentin and her father was Henry Quentin(b. 1885 d.1906) from Germany. Her mother Margaret ?(b. 1885 d. 3/1/1906) was Pennslyania-Dutch. I do know that Henry Quentin re-married after the death of his first wife and then died about three years later. Margaret's sister was the one who raised the now orphaned gr-grandmother. I have found out that sisters name, Barbara and her husband Albert Housman(sp.?) were the ones to raise my gr-grandmother Barbara Quentin. Does my new info strike a cord. I really hope so, I can't seem to find anybody. I hope we can help each other!

As you notice my maiden name is Quentin and I was born and raised South of Hannover in Goettingen. My family comes from the Varlosen/ Dransfeld area, which is South of Hannover and North of Kassel, and yes we are also "Huguenots". Perhaps we could exchanage some family history, if you are interested, and possibly find a connection. Please mention where you live, and my address is Lynchburg, Virginia.
Hope to hear from you in the near future.
Edith Maurice

and yes, we also
are "Huguenots".

Quentins in Germany

Our family branch of Quentins is located in the north of Germany, we originally come from around the area of Hannover. My father's name is Heinz, my grandfather's name was Oskar and he was born around 1900. He once told me that our ancestors emigrated from France to escape from being murdered by hugenott hunters (remember Bartholemew night). That's all I know....so, is someone here related to me or has anymore information??

Hi Jennifer,

I can't tell you for the moment if we're related. I know some Cantins from Canada changed their name in US for Canton or Quentin. I also know some French people came in US, specially in New York and kept their name Quentin. Let me know about your family, names (full names) dates and places. I'll verify in my dictionary of over 11,300 names if I can find out something interesting to you.

This is my own email: rcantin6413@hotmail.com

Bye

Bob

Quentin family

Hi Joseph,
My ancestor was named Nicolas Quentin. He was Frenchman, probably from Normandy, France. He was born around 1633 and died at L'Ange-Gardien, near Quebec City, on May 27th 1683. He got married to Magdeleine Roulois, on August 3rd 1660, at Quebec City. We never found up his birthdate certificate because where he is supposed to come from (Genneville ou Gonnevile, southern Honfleur) there's nothing about him. Reading your notes, I heard for the 3rd time there are some Quentin in Germany. First time, from a woman living at Vancouver, British Columbia, Jeanne Quentin, second, from Texas, I can't remember the first name, and third from both of you (Jennifer and you). If I can be helpful, let me know and if you find something good email me at:
rcantin6413@hotmail. com
Give an eye on our Cantin Family Association Website:
http://www.qbc.clic.net/~rop_rom
Bye and good luck
Bob

No, I do not know Marie Antionette's maiden name. I do nknow thta they lived around Naples, Italy. There has been no mention of Canada in our family history that I am aware of.
I am unsure of years. I know that Angeline married Guiseppe Noviello. He came to the US in 1909 (aprox.) She came to the US sometime after that and they lived in the Wellsboro PA area for a few years and then moved to Williamsport, PA where they lived until their deaths. They had 10 children.
