The subject of this sketch, Jeremiah Quill, was born near Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland, Nov 7, 1824 and died June 7, 1910, at the age of 85 years and 7 months. As a boy he was apprenticed to a blacksmith in Killarney, afterwards gong to London, where he became a skilled steel forger.
About 1846 he came to America, locating in New York City, where he pursued his trade for a number of years. In the early 50's he came to Fremont, Ohio and soon procured work with the old David June Foundry cmpany. During this time he married a Miss Curren, who, however, lived but a short time. About 1857 he married the second time, with Miss Ellen McCarty, who proceded him to the grave in 1895.
In 1862 Nr, Quill was seized with the gold fever and went to California by way of The Horn. Remaining there 3 years, he returned to the home in Fremont and took a position with the L.S. & M.S. Railroad. In 1858 he moved his family to Elyria where he became foreman in the blacksmith department of the Lake Shore Shops. In 1875 he returned to Fremont and bought a farm in Sandusky township, where he successfully tilled the soil for more than twnety years. Upon the death of Mrs. Quill, he sold the farm and sent to live with his only living child, Mrs. Mary Quidort, at St. Louis, Michigan.
Mr. Quill was the father of no children by his first wife, but 13 children were the issue of his second union. All have preceded him to the grave except one daughter, Mrs. Mary Quidort. Seven died in childhood, and five grew to maturity, before their decease, having been well known residents of Sandusky county; namely, Hannah, wife of Henry Shute; Rosa, wife of Jos Seitel, Nellie, wife of Michael Cummings; Hannah and Margaret Quill. There are living 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Mr. Quill was for many years a familiar figure about Fremont and was known to his friends as "Jerry". He was one of Sandusky county's prominent residents, and the Quill family was one of the best known and most popular in Sandusky township; and also in St. Ann's congregation, where they were faithful attendants.
