Angel, Have you looked in "The Quinby-Quimby Family of Sandwich, New Hampshire" yet? It's written by Henry Cole Quinby; Tuttle Co. publishers,1923, Rutland, VT. I know they have a copy at the Maine State Library. Your local library may be able to get a copy on inter-library loan. I think that you would find it helpful.

Was your Warren QUIMBY perhaps James Warren QUIMBY, who married Dorcas FISH of Starks, ME? He was born 18 March 1830, son of Jonathan B. QUIMBY and Mary FISH.
L.Dodge (rlsdodge@compuserve)

Quimbys of Starks, ME

I'm looking for the first name of my ggg grandmother. She was born in NH and married a John Taylor from Starks, ME. She had a daughter Martha F. (Fish?) Taylor and possibly other children. Many children of Jonathon and Tabitha Quimby moved to Starks in the early 1800's. I think my ggg grandmother was one of their children. Unfortunately, there are two Miss Quimbys listed under the names of Jonathon's children, born around 1792-96. John Taylor was born around 1796, so they were about the same age. The HC Quimby book wasn't much help, nor have been the vital records in Starks. Is it possible that you might know her first name or something else that might help me? I'd really love to solve this mystery. Thanks!

There are also at least two William Willey Quimbys as well. I am descended from the one who married 1st Jane (Quimby?) who had a daughter Dorcas Jane born 12 Jul 1840, d. 26 Sep 1879. He married 2nd Martha Lowell and died in Bucksport ME (I don't have the date at hand). However there was another, near the same time who went South. The Quimby line for us stops with William Willey. I am really very anxious to find that line and have ordered the Quimby books from Higginson books. I have never heard of the one just mentioned. I would be interested in sharing any info. Is this Eliphalet the one married to Betsey Willey who moved from New Hampshire to Athens, Somerset Co. ME?

Have you checked the 1900 census for that area of IN where he lived at time of death??Also, my guess would be that his mother or grandmothers name was Allen. Suggest you copy all Quimby names and data from the area in which he resided, some are most likely kin. Many quimbys went to Ohio, most from ME NH.
William Murch Quinby / Quimby

From "Genealogical History of the Quinby [Quimby] Family in England and America," by Henry Cole Quinby [The Tuttle Company, Rutland, Vermont, Publishers, 1915], p.p. 477-478:

1462. William Murch9 [Jacob8, Jacob7, Jacob6, Benjamin5, Joseph4, Joseph3, Robert2] born 18 Aug. 1824, [says his discharge paper in the Mexican war; 17 Aug. 1824, at Portland, Me., says the family record.] He enlisted as a recruit, 12 Aug. 1847, in the Second regiment of Dragoons, commanded by Col. May, to serve "during the war with Mexico," and "was honorably discharged at Carlisle Barracks, Pa., 28 June, 1848, by reason of the expiration of his term of service; said William M. Quinby was born in Boston, in the state of Massachusetts; is 23 years old, five feet, ten and one-half inches high, fair complexion, gray eyes, light hair" [signed, C. A. May]. [Files at Pension office]. He made his claim No. 25296, for bounty land, 3 July, 1848.

Rev. A. A. Miner married William M. Quinby at Boston, 22 Aug. 1849, to Susan D., age 23, born in New Hampshire, daughter of Moses Brown; he was son of Jacob, born in Maine, and it is stated that this was his second marriage. I find no further record of her.

William M. Quinby was commissioned 28 Apr. 1861, as captain of Co. I, First regiment, Maine Volunteer Infantry. His residence was then Portland, Me., and his age was 37. He resigned or was mustered out with his regiment after its three months' term, 15 Aug. 1861, and was appointed by President Lincoln, confirmed by the Senate and commissioned by the war department for active service in the Regular army of the United States, and was mustered 5 Aug. 1861, as a captain in the 12th regiment, U. S. Infantry. [Maine Adjut. Gen. Rep., 1861, p. 48; 1862, pp. 132, E10; 866, p. B34; 1864, I. p. 1068; 1866, pp. 200; F1348; 342]. He rose to the rank of Major. His name is found regularly spelled with an m thereafter.

He received a gunshot wound 9 Aug. 1862, at the battle of Cedar Mountain and was brevetted Major the same day, for gallantry in that battle. He was married in 1863 at Buffalo, N. Y., to Helen Lefevre, born 1819, an orphan, adopted daughter of a Mr. Foster of Portland, Me. Maj. Quimby had post duty between 1863 and 1865 at Fort Hamilton, later at Fort Columbus, both in New York harbor, and was on recruiting service at Williamsburg [Brooklyn], Buffalo and Rochester, N. Y.
Joseph Quimby born July 1, 1750, New Hampshire

Hi, I am so confused! I found the above mentioned Quimby in my tree, his wives listed as Hannah Noyes and Azuba(h) Partridge. I think this is correct.

(1.) I have different info on Azuba and I don't know which is correct: 1752-1829 in my records vs. the memorial marker lists her as 1744-1829.

(2.) Also the marker lists Joseph as 1742-1806 and I have 1750-1797. Which one is correct?

Or am I totally on the wrong track? Please help. :)

Thanks,
Sue in New Hampshire

If you're still available, do you have information on a John Quimby, b ~1824 at ?, but lived in T/Wawarsing, Ulster Co, NY [Wawarsing abutts T/Neversink; Sullivan Co split off from Ulster in 1809].

The Ulster County Archives search has John, age 25, marrying Ruth Ann Frantz in Oct 1848 in Wawarsing, both from Wawarsing.

They also have John Quimby, age 23, marrying M Frantz Nov 1848. He's from Napanock (Napanoch), Ulster NY; she's from County Line (spans border of T/Warwarsing, Ulster & T/Mamakating, Sullivan).

Both marriages performed by Mr Newman.

Same marriage recorded 2 different ways?

Two John Quimbys marrying related Frantz women?

Death notice:
"1852 July 2--In Frantzdale [T/Wawarsing, Ulster, NY], the wife of John Quimby, and daughter of Joseph France, in her 28th year." The Whig Press, Middletown, New York
So, they stayed in area at least for those first few years.

So far, I've found a John D Quimby, 26 yo boat builder, in T/Mamakating, Sullivan NY (probably near the Delaware & Hudson Canal). He's with Harriet, though, so it's not this John.

Thanks for your time.

Marthas about the same time.
I would also be interested in how or if your John Quimby is connected to the Quimbys of Clarke Co, Ms especially considering the various ties of A.
To Quimby of Athens ME descendants:

Does anyone know how Peter Quimby of Athens Maine in 1820, then Sangerville, and finally Hartland in the 1850 Census relates to the other Quimbys on this board? His wife was Lydia and his son Freeman died when a young man, seeming to be the only male descendant who remained in Maine; his brothers and several sisters removed to the mid-West. He left a son Freeman Jr. whose mother's name was Diana. In 1850 Peter and his wife Lydia were living with their son-in-law Wm. Starbird in Athens. I have deeds that show a bond for support to Freeman and after Freeman's death to Wm Starbird.

Any information would be appreciated.

Ruth Blood rfb@usa.net
