Leona M. Raabe, 89, Helenville, formerly of Johnson Creek
If I could sit across the porch of God, I'd thank Him for lending me you.
Leona M. Raabe, 89, of Helenville, formerly of Johnson Creek, passed away at her home on Monday morning, June 22, 2009.
The former Leona Maria Lydia Tabbert was born on Nov. 12, 1919, on the family farm in the Town of Farmington in Jefferson County, the daughter of Frank and Martha (Grossert) Tabbert. On July 2, 1952, she married Clarence Raabe at their minister's home in Johnson Creek. Clarence preceded her in death on July 25, 1976.
She was a 1937 graduate of Johnson Creek High School. Upon graduation, Leona continued classes for piano and guitar.
Leona had helped on the family farm, and was employed as a retail clerk and as a nursing assistant.
She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Johnson Creek, its Ladies Aid and church circle. She also had been a member of the Historical Society for many years.
She had a wealth of knowledge regarding the history of Farmington and Johnson Creek. Leona made a video tape of the history of Johnson Creek, which is in the Johnson Creek Library.
She loved caring for her animals, especially her cats, Boy Senior, Boy Junior and Little Lemon Boy. One of her favorite things to do, during her active years, was to collect the eggs from the chickens.
She enjoyed quilting, baking, reading, watching TV, and flower and vegetable gardening, especially the part of harvesting the fruits and vegetables. She also enjoyed visiting with family and friends, often using her delightful sense of humor during these visits.
Leona leaves behind her good friends and caregivers, Lisa, Lohnny and Aly Lotz, Sue Busalacchi, Bill Mueggenburg, Cindy Mueggenburg and Bill Barrett, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, other caregivers, the staff at Dr. Basarich's office and staff members from Rainbow Hospice.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Gertrude Tabbert; her maternal and paternal grandparents, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, June 25, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Johnson Creek, with Sister Shannon Finger officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Johnson Creek.
Relatives and friends may call to pay their respects at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Memorials, if desired, may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, the Humane Society of Jefferson County or Rainbow Hospice of Jefferson County.
The Hafemeister Funeral Home in Watertown is in charge of arrangements.
