My name is Rob Rodriguez and my grandfather is Marvin Palmquist and his mother was a Rabe from Kroeschel (SP?). He took me yesterday to Kroeschel to visit the graves of his cousins and his grandparents. We even visited his mother's parental home, which is almost across the street from the cemetary. I recognize almost all of the names listed in the previous posts from the cemetary. My grandfather is 90 years old and remembers many of the people listed very well. Please e-mail me if you have any information as I know he would love to share stories. Thanks Rob. rodrigue1@augnet.edu

I almost forgot, I also met the Gangelhoff's who are his cousins who now reside in Florida. My Grandfather often told me stories of his cousin who played in the White Sox organization and was one of the best high school players he has ever seen.

Okay. I have a copy of Ida Hecht's birth certificate which states Dora Rabe as her mother's maiden name and her father as Joseph Hecht, both parents from Germany. This makes sense. Thank you for clearing this up.

Re: "Dora" (Theodora, Dorothea?) RABE b 1849, m Joseph HECHT

This might get confusing because there are at least two folks with the same name and some confusion about which Anna Rabe was which.

Here goes:
Dorothea Boeckman married a Henry Rabe (b 1816) in Germany. Of their children, Dorcas Rabe (b 1849) also married a Henry Rabe (b.unnknown)and had at children in Germany, but I've found only two so far in the US: Anna Rabe (18 Jun 1871) and Charles Rabe (Feb 1876).

Henry and Dorothy Boeckman Rabe's son Frederick Carl Rabe (b 1842)married Dora Garloff in Germany. Fredr. Rabe, wife Dora and several children [passenger numbers 145-150] came over on the ship Suevia on 26 Oct. 1881 but are not listed with other Rabes on the ship's passenger list. [Just to note: passenger 155 is an Emma Gerloff - don't know if she is related or not.]

Frederick & Dora had a daughter Anna Rabe (b 14 Dec 1866). This Anna married Cornelius Shields (b 1855). They had a son Charles (b Jan 1896)and in the 1900 US Federal Census have an adopted daughter (Gerty? Lagersell? b 1888 in Iowa)living with them.

My Anna Rabe (b 1871) came with a John Rabe (age 19, not found in US yet) and another female whose name can't be easily read [Aima? Aina? age 8] on the Suevia 26 Oct. 1881. They are passenger numbers 1035 - 1037. At any rate, the Rabes were all on the same ship, but not together on the list.

Dorcas' Henry died in 1885. She married a second time Joseph Hecht (b abt 1854) and had more children. Their daughter Ida married Emmet Athey.

Dorcas & Henry's daughter Anna married 1st Jacob Frederick Burkhardt (b 16 Apr 1862,d 22 May 1905) and 2nd Jacob Stegmeier (b 12 Nov 1869). Neither marriage produced children. Anna was Jacob Burkhardt's second wife.

Both Annas died in California:
According to the California Death Index online, Anna Rabe Shields' mother's maiden name was Garloff. This Anna d 23 Sep 1955 in San Bernardino County.

According to the California Death Index online, Anna Rabe Burkhardt Stegmeier's mother's maiden name was Rabe. This Anna d 16 Sep 1955 in Los Angeles County.

I've spent some time trying to track everyone and keep the genealogy straight. I don't know if I have it all correct yet. Let me know if this helps or confuses.

Pam B

Dr. John Charles Augustus Theordore Rabb

hello

I am looking for Dr John Charles Augustus Theordore Rabbes parents He was Married to Jane Elizabeth Elliot in Elliot Co ky on Aug 12, 1858

Dr. Rabbe was born 1817 In Hanover Germany He died abt 1895 in Elliot Co. Ky.

this is an article i had email to me on Dr. Rabb

Dr. Rabb is said to have been the first medical doctor actually educated
in a medical school to set up a practice in our county. And I am sure that
he was a very welcome arrival in the Stark area.

John C. Rabb: Sgt., Co., D, 5th., Ky., Inf.
Sgt. Rabbs full name was John Charles Theodore Augustus Rabb and that he was
born in Hanover, Germany about 1818. (Birth date based on age at the time of his marriage.) He graduated from the medical school of the University of Berlin in 1848 or 1849.
Dr. Rabb (sometimes spelled Rabbe) apparently came to America soon after
graduating from medical school, and may have lived in the New Jersey area for a
short time. But why did he come to present day Elliott Co? Hew did it happen
that he singled out this area? Did he know someone that had already settled here, or did he more or less just stumble upon this area? We may never know the answers to these questions, but there does seem to be an explanation for his leaving the New Jersey area..

It is not known if Dr. Rabb had been previously married, but on Aug 12, 1858 he
married Jane Elliott, a daughter of John L. Elliott of the Stark area of Elliott
Co. Information from the marriage record indicates that Dr. Rabb was 40 years of
age, single, and born in Germany. Jane was 20 years of age, and was born in Bath Co, KY, most likely the area that later became a part of Morgan Co.
When the 1870 Elliott Co census was taken, the Rabb family was found
living in the Stark area. Perhaps due to an error on the part of the census taker, Dr.
Rabb was listed as Grance Rabb, age 53, born in KY and a farmer. On the other hand,
whoever transcribed the census from the original record could have made the errors. But
I can imagine that Dr. Rabb had a very strong German accent, which might have made it
difficult for our local people to understand everything he said.
In 1870, Jane (Elliott) Rabb was 31 years of age and born in "KY". Three
children were named in this report; Mary A., 11; Amanda, 9; and William, 3.
Elliott Co Vital Statistics show that twin daughters were born to John C. Rabb and
Jane E. Elliott on Oct 26, 1874. Records seem to imply that these twins did not
survive for very long.
Family researchers say Jane Elliott Rabb died in 1877, and indeed, when the 1880
census was taken, Dr. Rabb was a widower, age 63 years. Dr. Rabb, along with 2
children, William, 13, and Mary E., 7, were living in the home of Milton and Manervy
Rabb Waggoner. Also found living in the Waggoner home was another Rabb daughter,
Amanda Skeens and her one year old daughter, Elizabeth. Amanda, age 19, was married
to Luke Skeens.
Obviously, Dr. Rabb was still living when the 1890 Elliott Co census
was taken. This is also supported by the 1890 tax records, which indicate that he owned 180 acres of land, with Jake Kinser being his near neighbor.
Mrs. Penicnak says, "It is believed that Doc Rabb died about 1895." She continues, "My grandfather said that he remembered the death of his grandfather, Doc Rabb, and following his coffin up a hill where there was a Masonic funeral rite."
Harlan and Meta Skaggs now live on the property once owned by Dr.
Rabb. I visited Harlan a few years ago and he pointed out the spot where the Doc Rabb
home sat. (Harlan is a great-grandson of Doc Rabb though his grandmother Mary Rabb Smith, who married Morris Smith.) Dr. Rabb is buried on a high hill near the home of Harlan and Meta.
I have stated that Dr. John C. Rabb(e) served in Co., D, of the 5th., Regt. Leonidas
Hamilton Elliott, most likely a brother-in -law of Dr. Rabb, was the Captain of
this Company, and died during the Battle of Princeton, VA on May 16, 1862. Dr. Rabb
may have been at Capt. Elliott's side when he died. It is known that Dr. Julius
Rabbe, believed to have been a brother to Dr. John C. Rabbe, was there when Capt. Elliott
expired.

I'm searching for European (German or Prussian) connections to Gottfried Rabe (born about 1796; married first to an Elizabeth (surname unknown) and then Hannah Charlotte Schmidt). They lived in Landsberg (now in Poland, 1+ hours east of Berlin) before emigrating to Russia.

Gottfried took 7 children with him to Russia; two were named Karl Ludwig (b.1819) and August Ferdinand (b. 1824). Since family names were often linked to extended family, there might be a connection to the Karl August Rabe that you've mentioned.

I know that there were Rabes (or Raabes) in this area since the 15th century, but I can't make the connections...yet.

If you have any clues, could you please pass them along to me?

Thank you,
J.L.
Re: "Dora" (Theodora, Dorothea?) RABE b 1849, m Joseph HECHT

Hi! I'm working on the Rabe/Hecht family even though neither are in my direct family line. They are connected, and as such, need researching. This family has been one of my many puzzles. I found this 2003 query as well as a few other older ones and am sending the same info to everybody. I haven't gotten any responses so far, but someone must still be doing reasearch. Anyway, here is how my ancestors fit in. . .

Background: my great-grandfather, Jacob Frederick Burkhardt (b. 1852 in Germany), divorced his first wife and married (between 1900 and 1905) his live-in housekeeper Anna Rabe (b. 1871 in Germany). He died in 1905. Jacob Burkhardt had moved from Belle Plaine to Clinton, Iowa where he died. After his death, Anna moved to California and married a Jacob Stegmeir. That's about all I knew until I ran into this posting in the Rabe Genforum:

Does anyone know who these children were or what happed to them?
John RABE ,19;Anna RABE,16 ; Minna,8 RABE , who possibably came to America with their Uncle Frederick John Carl and Aunt Dora Gerloff RABE ,26 Oct 1881, Ship Suevia.
Story for Anna 16, was she was born out of wedlock,
she was mistreated, so her Uncle and Aunt brought
her to America with them.

I replied and got this answer:

Anna Rabe has been our mystery person. My aunt told me that
there might have been two Anna's that came to America with
our Frederick John Carl And Dorothea Garloff Rabe. On my
Family work sheet I've only got one Anna.Possibly born in
1866 or 1871.When I found the ship Suevia which they came
to America on the 26 Oct 1881 to my surprise there were two
Anna's. One 8 the other 16. We do know this family went to
Belle Plaine. One Anna we know married Cornelius Schields.
This Anna died 23 Nov 1955 Ontario,San Bernadino, Calif.
What happened to the other Anna we do not know.
My aunt at the time said one of the Anna' could have been
a child of one of the families that stayed in Germany. Her
story about Anna was that in Germany if it was found out,
it could be very hard for Anna to live because she was
possibly born out of wedlock. So our great grandparents said
she could come with them to America. This is all I seem to have and can remember about the Anna's.

Me again:

I came up with almost nothing surfing the internet and delving into Ancestry.com except an almost illegible listing in the 1910 US Census for Cucamonga, San Bernardino, California for Jacob and Anna Stegmeier and "mother"[should be "-in-law"] Dortha H[___]. I finally wrote to the San Bernardino Public Library requesting the obits for Anna Rabe Burkhardt Stegmeier (her spelling) and Jacob Stegmeir (his spelling). Some of the materials I received back in the mail were family group sheets relating to the Stegmeir/Stegmeier family. Anna's mother was given both as Dora Rabe and Dora Hecht/ Her father was Henry Rabe according to one sheet. Another sheet has Anna's maiden name as Hecht - which is a logical mistake. However, in the Federal and Iowa State censuses in Benton County, she is only called Hecht while living with Joseph and Dora and "son" Charley "Hecht" in 1885. In the 1895 Iowa state census for Eldorado Township in Benton County, the other children are listed Charlie, William, Louis and Ida living with Joseph and Dora. By that census Anna was out on her own. She is housekeeper for my great-grandfather in 1895, but listed as Anna Robie. In 1900, in Clinton County, Iowa. she is Rabe. One of Anna's obits refers to a half brother Lewis Hecht. I know Anna had no children with either husband.

That is basically what I've found so far. I just got the info from California two weeks ago so am still checking into things. I've emailed the lady whose posting I found telling her of my findings, but I haven't heard back, yet. Actually two people were involved in my first hunt into this family, but that was some time ago.

I have only two photos of Anna (b. 1871) and her mink furpiece that she is wearing in one photo. The furs are three mink - legs, tails and heads - the first one "biting" the third instead of a clasp. The mink are not top quality as they have white on them and are medium brown in color, but it is nice to have both firpiece and photo! The other photo is probably the wedding photo.

If you could let me know where I've gone wrong or if I have pieces missing, I would appreciate it. I just wish I'd sent my request to the library sooner as some of the posting for the Rabes are very old - computerwise.

New info:

Since I've been looking around "armed" with this new information, I've run into several people working on the Rabe/Hecht line. If you search on Rootsweb you will find an Eric Zimmerman who, apparently, as more on the Rabe side. I sent him an email two days ago, but I haven't hear from him yet.

Pam Burkhardt
