I am looking for this name which is in an older letter "as wealty English Southerners owning a big plantation with slaves. A great great grandmother was raised by a negro mammy loved her very much." Supposedly "a distant cousin to Queen Victoria and proved it."

I have just gained access to an older family genealogy book in which I have a picture of Louisa Rackaby born April 6, 1810 in Virginia and died May 18, 1906. Her parents were John Rackaby & Elizabeth Craddock whose father was Moses Craddock. A genealogist went through all the information and was unable to find a Rackaby surname. I now believe from my internet research that the surname must have been Rackerby. I do have a copy of the 1900 US Census for Morgan County, IL in which I found her living with her son-in-law & daughter & their family being 90 years old. In the census, it states that her name is Eliza Miller & her birth month & year was May, 1810. Miller was her daughter's maiden name and she was born in Missouri but family history has it that she had been married several times and was disowned by her wealthy family for marrying below her.

It remains a mystery but I am still working on it. Much of my information was handed down from earlier generations so it is well possible that some of the information is wrong.

I would appreciate if you would email me at bettycof@lisco.com.

Thanks!

No, Millie, I have not. I must confess that I haven't really looked as there seemed to be no "family information" on the Raccaby surname. My family information even had the name wrong. After confering with those living relatives we decided that Raccaby is right not Rackerby as our records had shown. It is also rumored that Louisa only learned to read in her latter years; ie. taught by family members when she was living with her daughter.

Did you find any other old photos of the Rackerby line in your search. They are hard to find. Millie

Have you tried searching the name RACKERBY to see if there is any connection. Myggggrandmother's uncle had a plantation in Kentucky known as the Hermitage. His name was Robert Craddock. My ggggrandmother married a William Rackerby.

Thank you for your suggestion, I will do this. I believe that I will have to get more information from some place else other than the internet as this seems to be my big brick wall. I now have this down as a alternate spelling in my research. Thanks again!
