Sandy,

We are indeed cousins! Since we share gr x4 grandparents (Joshua and Stevias), that makes us 5th cousins, I believe.

Rather than my transcribing the pages on Elizabeth here, from the Potter & Rackley book (I have the 1984 first edition; have seen the '96 update, now in my aunt's possession -- she lives in Gainesville, FL), send me your mailing address and I will copy the pages on Elizabeth, John Fowler and their descendants and mail them to you (don't worry about the copying or postage; always glad to come across a fellow Rackley cousin!).

Looks like about 7 pages on your family in the '84 book, as well as 2 pages on "The Descendants of Edward Rackley" [the progenitor] -- the frontispiece of the book.

Should provide you with lots of information!

Steve Cox
Knoxville, TN

Hi Steve,
Thank you for the information on the Rackley family. It appears that we are cousins. If this is the Elizabeth Rackley who married John Fowler, then your Shadrick and my Elizabeth were brother and sister.
I'm sure I'll have questions as I research this line. Are there any copies of bible or other records being held by anyone in the family that would pertain to my line. If anyone has anything to share I would be happy to pay copying and postage costs.
My DAR lineage goes from Fowler through Cribb and Rhodes. Thanks again.
Sandy
Sandra,

I note that you were corresponding with "Tim," who may be Timothy Rackley, co-author of "RACKLEY: A Southern Colonial Family" (1984). If so, he's certainly more knowledgeable in this area than I.

But, for what it's worth, from Tim and Eloise Potter's book (I'm paraphrasing, commenting):

I have the following as the children of Joshua & Setevias:

Elizabeth Rackley b: ABT. 1755 in Bute County, North Carolina
Jeremiah Rackley b: 1758 in Sampson County, North Carolina
John Micajah Rackley b: 1758 in Sampson County, North Carolina [Jeremiah & John Micajah: twins?]
Lucy Rackley b: ABT. 1763 in Sampson County, North Carolina
Elijah Rackley b: BET. 1764 - 1767 in Sampson County, North Carolina
Jesse J. Rackley b: 1769 in Sampson County, North Carolina
Shadrick Rackley b: 1771 in Sampson County, North Carolina
James Rackley b: 1772 in Sampson County, North Carolina
Sarah Rackley b: 1772 in Sampson County, North Carolina [James & Sarah: twins?]
Lucretia Rackley b: 1774 in Sampson County, North Carolina
Frederick Rackley b: 1781 in Sampson County, North Carolina.

My own ancestor was Shadrick (I've also seen it as "Shadrack") Rackley; through his son, Peyton; through his son, Valentine V.; through his daughter, Emma (md. Edward P. Collins); through their daughter, Rosalie Collins (my maternal grandmother).

Shadrick was the son of Joshua Rackley and Setevias (also "Citivias," in the '96 update to the book) Rackley [first cousins]; Joshua was the son of Anthony Rackley, b. Essex, VA, ca. 1700; d. aft 1765, probably in Duplin (Sampson), NC; m. Jane _______; Setevias was the daughter of John Rackley III, b. Essex, VA, ca. 1685; d. Bute (Franklin), NC, 1769, m. Mary _______. John III and Anthony were brothers, the sons of John Rackley II, b. Essex, VA, ca. 1670; d. Henrico, VA, 1738, m. Jane _______.

Concerning any Revolutionary ancestors, Tim and Eloise note (again, I'm paraphrasing):

As far as the brothers, Anthony and John III, Anthony's children (known) were Joshua, of course, and also a "John" Rackley.

John III's children (known) were:

John IV
Saul
Lucretia, m. David Anthony
Martha, m. _______ Smith
Susannah, m. _______ Hunt
Mary, m. _______ Hunt
Seleter, m. Martin Wheeler
Passon, who m. Sarah Parker
Mills, m. Rebecca _______, and
Setevias (m. Joshua Rackley).

Of interest, one of Passon's sons, [another] John Rackley, died at Valley Forge, PA, while serving in the Revolutionary War. Passon (and Sarah Parker) also had a daughter named "Cityvias," m. Edwin Bane.

Eloise Potter is my 2nd cousin, once removed (she descends from one of Valentine's sons, my Emma's younger brother: Claudius [Claude] Calhoun Rackley). Timothy is from the Virginia Rackleys, and a far more distant cousin (of some degree, anyway; we all go back to the first Rackley in America, Edward, who came to VA in 1639; d. Essex, VA, abt 1663).

Pleased to correspond with you, any time.

Steve Cox
Knoxville, TN
sjcmsc@knology.net

Hi Tim,
I also descend from Elizabeth Rackley and John Fowler. My sisters and I joined the DAR through this line(Fowler). We are just starting to research the Rackley line. Is there a Revolutionary patriot in Elizabeth's line?

Hi,
sorry i have not replied sooner...i kind of gave up looking for a while ! It sees we are talking about the same Walter and Eva.I have heard of your father Farnham, but not very much i'm afraid.Eva was my G Aunt, her brother William cae to visit in the mid to late 1930's and becae a bit of local celebrity, even appearing on the local radio station !
William's son Charles Ackland, was my Granfather. I didn't know hi very well as he died when i was Four years old. My Dad used to tell me that Eva's brother Frederick also travelled to Pensylvannia with them, but i could never find anything to prove this.I would welcome any information you can give me.

Thanks so much

Rachel

Sorry to interrupt your conversation, but this is the closest post I could find to what I'm looking for. I need any information on Rackley's in Ennis, Texas. My grandfather was Paul Ray Rackley, some of his sisters names were; Gail Rackley- Jan Rackley- and I think Ann Rackley. I can't think of his parents names at the moment. They had a pretty large family, he was the only son in a family of six or seven sisters. His father was brutally murdered by one of the daughter's boyfriends, and his mother was killed by a severe case of gangreen and of natural causes.

Rackley, a southern Colonial family: The descendants of Edward Rackley of Virginia :

I am currently in posession of "Rackley, a southern Colonial family: The descendants of Edward Rackley of Virginia : " by Eloise Potter w/ help from Tim Rackley and will happily look up information for anyone.

If you're lucky enough to have a copy of this book you know how useful it is. If you're not lucky enough, you know how rare it is. It traces the descendants of Edward Rackley, the earliest recorded Rackley in the US who settled in what is now Essex Co. VA in the early 17th century.

I'm a descendant of Anthony Rackley who settled in Duplin Co. NC in the early 18th century, and once again am happy to lookup information.

Holly, I don't yet have information on where the VA Rackley's are buried, probably because most of them had left VA pretty early in our history. However, I too live in VA and am currently trying to find information on the location of Edward Rackley's property in Essex Co.

If I come across any cemetery records I'll let you know.

I am descended from Anthony Rackley who moved from VA to Duplin Co, NC in the mid 1700's.

thanks,
Meredith

I don't have the book with me at the moment. I'll check it when I get home, however as I remember it the book says that the origin is English, and the meaning is generally related to a topographical feature like a hill or mound.

Here are a couple of links about the surname origin.

http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/rackley-family-cres...

http://genealogy.familyeducation.com/surname-origin/rackley

The book that I mentioned above says that the earliest American Rackley was Edward who arrived around 1624. The theory is that he was an indentured servant. His descendants (in my line) made the move to NC 3 generations later in the early 1700's.

That's not to say that there couldn't have been other Rackleys in MD or elsewhere, or that one of those who moved to NC might not have been a prisoner of war. The French and Indian War ran from 1754-1763, which places it right around the time that John II and Anthony Rackley, the brothers who moved to NC would have been adults.(Anthony died in 1765, I don't have a date for John). So, that's story is entirely plausible.

I'll check the appendices in the book to see if it shows any lines that originate in MD or NC.

thanks,
Meredith

My grandmother, who resides in Oklahoma, has dedicated most of her life to tracing the 'Rackley" family. I was doing a little searching of my own when I stumbled across your posting. I found it interesting because my grandmother claims to believe that the first Rackley settled in the Carolinas after being released as a prisoner of war. If my memory served me correctly, he was captured in Wales. My details are rather shaky. I was under the impression that the Rackleys were originally from Wales and Ireland. If you have information, I would love for you to share.

Chris,

When you have a chance (sounds like you're on the go quite a bit), email me at sjcmsc@knology.net and I would be pleased to try to find out something for you about your Rackley ancestry (if I can). Have you had occasion to read Eloise Potter & Tim Rackley's great book on this family: "RACKLEY: A Southern Colonial Family" (1984; updated 1996)? I have a copy of the '84 original; let me know some of your immediate forbears, and I can probably help you trace them back to one of the many Rackley families in "The Book."

Best regards,

Steve Cox
Knoxville, TN
(my mother's grandmother was Emma Rackley, b. NC, md. Edward P. Collins; d. Oviedo, Polk, FL; Emma can be traced back to Edward Rackley, arr. VA in 1639 -- the progenitor).

Re: Rackley, a southern Colonial family: The descendants of Edward Rackley of Virginia :

Meredith,

Greetings from a fellow Rackley descendant! (Edward, John I, John II; John III and Anthony; Setevias and Joshua; Shadrick, Peyton, Valentine, Emma (m. Edward P. Collins; my great grandparents).

According to the 1984 edition, 2nd cousin (once removed) Eloise F. Potter writes --

THE RACKLEYS IN COLONIAL AMERICA (p. 9):

"Headright records indicate that Edward Ratiffe came from England to Virginia in 1639. In 1641 Richard Preston received 250 acres for the transport of five servants, including 'Edward Ratcliffe.' Both citations appear to be misspellings of the Rackley surname, which also appears in Virginia records as Ratlief, Ratleiff, Ratliffe, Rackly, Racle, Racly, Ratly, and Rattle."

. . .

"We can only guess what circumstances prompted Edward to leave his homeland. Perhaps he wanted adventure and economic opportunity. Although Edward may have come over with a group of friends and relatives, we have no documentation for this. Richard Rackley also arrived in Virginia in 1639, and William Rackley settled in New England about 1676, having come over as boatswain on a ship out of Bristol. If there is any relation between Edward and these other settlers, it more than likely will not be proved until extensive genealogical research as [sic] has been done in England."

I'll see what I can find on the MD - NC question and get back to you.

Best regards,

Steve Cox
Knoxville, TN

I am looking for information on my grandfather, Elbert James Rackley, Sr. He was the only surviving child of the outbreak of pneumonia in Vilonia, Arkansas along with his mother, Wilma. I don't know her maiden name as she was married 8 more times that we know of. He has no siblings that we have been made aware of either. He married Grace Kincaid in Arkansas. They had 5 children. 4 boys and 1 girl, Gloria June which only lived 6 months. The family that had the records have all passed away and the records can't be found now. Can you help me? Papa never talked of his family and neither did Granny.
