Mary,
Catherine was born in Friedenthal, Hesse (now Germany). She and her family arrived roughly 1845, in Baltimore. Catherine met Charles, while he was in the Civil War. Following the war, they (and all/most of the Racy family) moved out to Minnesota, via Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Charles died in Litchfield, MN, about 1910. Catherine eventually moved to lower Michigan, where she was living with her brother John; she passed away about 1917. As I mentioned in another reply, Civil War records can be an absolute wealth of information!

Mary,
Sorry for the LONG delay! Lots of changes in my life. Yes, Madeline (or "Madge") was my Grandmother, on my Dad's side (his Mother). I have more info, if you'd still like to collaborate. By the way - "Racy" is Hessian (from the town of Friedenthal), and probably was originally "Roese" (with an umlaut on the "o").

Re: Alexander Racy, Racey, Rasey born abt. 1830 in N.Y.

I wouldn't worry too much about her named being misspelled on the marriage certificate.

What I have found so far is that Cordelia Taylor Racy was born in New York, ca. 1830, the daughter of Canadian Aurelius/Amlicus/Amelick Taylor(his name is never spelled the same way twice) and Laura Hadsell. She married Henry Racy in 1852. In 1860, they were living with their three children (Phoebe, Laura and William H.) in Kinderhook Tp. Pike County, Illinois, as were Henry’s parents. Henry served in the 39th Missouri Infantry during the Civil War, and apparently died during or shortly after the war, as Cordelia filed for a widow’s pension in July of 1865. (Has anyone ordered his pension and service records from the National Archives?) In 1870, Cordelia and her children lived in Ray County, Missouri, as did her in-laws. The 1880 census found Cordelia and her son William, age 22 and disabled, living back in Hadley Tp., Pike County. Cordelia died shortly after this, as in 1881 her estate sold her New Philadelphia property.

It is interesting that Henry and Cordelia were married by C. S. Luce. Luce was a shoemaker and Baptist preacher. Free Frank McWorter, the founder of New Philadelphia, contracted with Luce to build a church and seminary at New Philadelphia. After several years, the church and seminary had not been built and lawsuits were filed. Luce and his family left shortly thereafter. Coincidently, Cordelia Racy would later buy two of the lots that Free Frank had deeded to C.S. Luce in exchange for building the church and seminary.

In 1850, according to the U.S. Census, Henry Racy lived in the household of his parents, John and Emeline, in Hadley Township, Pike County, Illinois (Hadley Tp. is where New Philadelphia is located). He was 20 years old. The other children in the household were Eliza J., Washington, John, Elizabeth and Mary A.

The Taylor/Tailor family also lived in Hadley Tp. in 1850.
"Amlicus Tailor" was a shoemaker, born in Canada, aged 35. His wife Laura, age also given as 35, was born in New York (the next census will say she was born in Massachusetts). The children in the household were Edward, Cordelia, Altha, Amelia, Noble D., and Jane.

The earliest surviving tax collector's book from Pike County shows that Henry Racy owned personal property assessed at $26 for which he owed 20 cents in state and county tax and 1 cent in town tax. However, the entry is marked "Gon" instead of "Paid." I think this means he was "gone off"--had moved away from the area. I do not find him in Hadley Township in the 1855 Illinois state census.

In 1860, "Amdeck Taylor" and family still lived in Hadley Township, but both the John Racy and Henry Racy families lived in Kinderhook Township, a few miles to the west. The Taylor family includes the parents and children Amelia, Noble, Jane, Alma (deaf) and Philander. Amelicus was no longer listed as a shoemaker, but was a farmer. I have noticed that the cottage industry of shoemaking was rapidly disappearing from the region at this time. In the east shoe factories were overtaking the manufacture of shoes at this time.

By 1870, Henry Racy had died, and the John Racy, Alexander Racy and Cordelia Racy households can all be found in Ray County, Missouri.

In October of 1874, Cordelia purchased two lots in New Philadelphia, Pike County, Illinois. These lots (Block 8, Lots 1 and 2)had changed hands several times over the years, but no one had bothered to file their deeds at the courthouse. I think Cordelia must have been a good businesswoman and insisted that she have clear title to her property, because all of a sudden, many years worth of deeds were filed on the same date that she bought the lots. The property was sold after her death. The executor was N.V. Hadsell, one of the many Hadsells in the community, no doubt a relative of Cordelia's mother.

The next time I get over to the Pike County courthouse, I will look to see if their is a probate file for Cordelia Racy. Also, I think she is buried in the New Philadelphia area, but I don't have my copy of the cemetery inventory handy.

Anyone interested in exchanging information on the Racy or Taylor families is free to contact me directly at claireiris@springnet1.com

I have a copy of the 1860 Pike County, Ill census listing Alexander living in the home of John and Emeline. I think I have another census somewhere (among my reams of paper) listing him with them also as a son. I found my copy of Henry's marriage license. The marriage was performed on July 24, 1852, by Christopher Sandborn Luce, minister of the gospel in the Free Communion Baptist Church at New Philadelphia, Ill. The county clerk who issued the license was John J. Collard, Pike County, Ill. Now comes the discrepency. You said Henry's wife was Cordelia Taylor, but the license says Adelia Taylor??? Unless he married sisters one after the other, is it possible that her name is misspelled on the marriage license??? I find them listed as Henry and Cordelia on the 1860 Pike Co. Ill. census with children Pheby, Laura and William, ages 6, 4, and 2, so I'm sure they are the same people!!! You can contact me by email at tinck_e@yahoo.com if you would like to correspond further or have me send copies of these documents.

Thanks--no I do not have Henry & Cordelia's marriage record--all I have is Cordelia's requests for pension and pension increases for Henry's service in the Civil War. I have not found anything that ties Alexander to John & Emeline except that he is a close neighbor of theirs in Grape Grove, Mo.
Next to them is also Elisabeth Schofield who is their daughter--this I know from the pension requests because Elisabeth and Emeline were Cordelia's proof of her identity.

I have (somewhere) a copy of Henry and Cordelia's marriage record obtained when I stopped at the Pike County, Il., courthouse several years ago. I'm not sure where it is as I could not connect them as Alexander's brother and sil at that time and may have them in my very large miscellaneous folder. Do you have a copy? If not, I will try to find mine. John is recorded in the census listings as having been born between 1800 and 1804 (calculated by various ages on several census lits), but consistantly as born in N.Y. According to another researcher with whom I have talked, his parents were Silas Rasey and Hannah Garnsey. They appear on ancestorsearch.com, but I don't confirm that our John was their son. If you do, I would like to know. John's wife, Emeline Smith, was born in Eastmoreland, Oneida Co. N.Y between the years of 1810-13, again using several census lists to calculate age/birthdate. Both John and Emeline are buried in Tinney's Grove cemetary in Ray Co., Mo. Sorry I don't have more for you, but genealogy is sooooo time consuming, and I haven't touched mine in months. Afraid if I start again, I'll get nothing else done and I have dozens of active search lines. Good luck.

I am great-great granddaughter of Henry B. Racy and Cordelia Taylor. Henry Died Dec 19 1864 while serving in the union army.. My mother joined the DUV many years ago so I have copies of documents that she used to join. Their daughter Laura is my great grandmother. I know that Cordelia is buried in Johnson Cemetery, Pike County and that she died on Feb 21 1881. I, also, know that Henry's father is John Racey and mother is Emeline Smith--Last in a 1870 census in Grape Grove, Ray, Mo. Did not know that she owned property in New Philadelphia- would be interested in anything more that you know--do not know Cordelia's parents or John or Emeline's parents

Thank you for your inquiry about the Racy family. I have quite a bit more information than I had at the time of my original post. This is a terribly busy week or two for me, but I will try to answer briefly now or you may email me at

tinck_e@yahoo.com

I do have a copy of Henry Racy's marriage certificate from the Pike County court house, if you are interested in it. At the time, I didn't know what first name I was looking for and thought he might be my line rather than an offshoot. Liz (Racy) Tincknell

I am also researching this family. I am interested in Henry B. Racy and his wife Cordelia Taylor. Henry was also a son of John and Emeline. Both the Racy and Taylor families were living in Hadley Township, Pike County, Illinois in 1850. Henry and Cordelia married in 1852. I do not know where they lived in 1860 and 1870. Henry served in the 39th Missouri Infantry during the Civil War and seems to have died during the war or shortly afterward. Cordelia was back in Pike County, Illinois in 1880 and was a property owner in the town of New Philadelphia. A disabled 22-year-old son William was living with her. I believe she died shortly after the 1880 census.

I am working with a group of historians and archaeologists researching New Philadelphia and am interested in finding out more about the Racy and Taylor families.

So glad to get your reply. I will try to answer more extensively via email later in the evening, including scanning some documents for you. I do NOT have a document for Monroe Racy's birth, but do have a census record I need to search for among my stacks of notes and documentations, listing Alexander and Sarah as his parents. His Kansas death certificate, however, lists John and Lena as his parents. I believe the death cert. is probably incorrect and that John and Lena (Emeline) were actually his grandparents. Will email more later. Liz

harry edward racy(racz) was my grandfather. he married thelma thayer. his parents are from hungary, but no one remembers their names, so i'm kinda at a dead end. i know he was born in detroit, raised on the southwest side, and had about 8 brothers and sisters - i think one of their names was william. other than that, i'm stuck. if anyone knows of them please e-mail me - i'd really appreciate it. esm423@hotmail.com

James Racy

Looking for information on James Racy, father of Frank C. Racy, my deceased father-in-law, who was born presumably at Rockville, MD on October 4, 1889. James was married to Alice Gordon. Both James and Alice were presumably from Scotland. James was referred to as "Pink Whiskers" because he had a red beard. For some unknown reason, James remarried and Frank left home permanently in his early teens because of his tyrannical step-mother. He married and had a family, but seldom discussed his background. Therefore, his survivors know practically nothing about their ancestors.

I'm trying to determine their Racy ancestry. Although I've checked the Social Security Death Index and and the census from 1850 through 1910, I've drawn a blank both on James Racy and Alice Barton along the whole eastern seabord.

I'd appreciate any information on James Racy, father of Frank C. Racy and husband of Alice (Gordon) Racy in the period of about 1850 through 1910.

Minnesota RACY Families

To anyone with RASE family history out there. I'm a 3rd great-grandson of John (b. abt 1818) and Catharine (b. abt 1827) Rase (later spelled RACY/RACEY/RACE, etc.), who immigrated to the US from the Hesse region of Germany, prior to 1864. They migrated from Maryland to Meeker county, Minnesota, between 1866 and 1868, accompanying their daughter Catharine and her husband Charles Doughtery (my 2nd great-grandparents). Both generations of these great-grandparents used the name of "Conrad" for their children, which might suggest a connection.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone with info or connections on this branch of the RASE family.
