RADKE/RADTKE in Eau Claire Co., Wisconsin

There's a German genealogy book (a set of books, really. Many volumes) called Deutsches Geschlecter Buch. In a family tree for RADKE/RADTKE from Schneidemuehl, Kr. Kolmar, Posen, there's a Wilhelm August RADKE b 1806, m Friederike Juliana BUSSE, b 1818. Among their children were Wilhelm, b June 1843, Amalie, b 1848, and Gustav Radke, b June 1850.

In the 1900 census in Eau Claire Co., Wisconsin, I found who I think are these sons and their families. There's a William A. RADTKE, m to Amelia. Children are Mollie, Ida, Frederick, Herman and Avada. Apparently there are 3 older children not in the hshld with the parents. A few pages away, there is a Gustav RADTKE m to Ernstina. No children.

My husband is descended from Amalia, b. 1848, daughter of Wilhelm and Friederike, and sister of William and Gustav. She married Gustav SCHURDEL, and their son Theodor came to the US, and lived briefly in Eau Claire Co., Wisconsin. I would love to make contact with anyone connected to any of these families, or anyone with information about them.

I have an old photo of a young couple, maybe their wedding photo, from the turn of the century. On the back is handwritten "Mr. & Mrs. Fred Radke". The photo studio was Houser in Michigan City, Ind. I have another old photo from the same studio of a girl from the turn of the century. On the back is handwritten "Gertrude Pahl". I feel like there is a connection between the two.

I also am a descendant of a Radke. My great-grandfather Franz Hermann married Wilhelmina Radke. They came over about 1885 and settled in Cottage Grove and later moved to Denmark Township. It is a strong possibility that they are related to your family.

To date, I am stymied in my research on this side because I do not know where in Germany (or Prussia) that they came from.

Do these names ring a bell with you?

Re: Radke family reunion - Minnesota

Hello Glenn,

Glad to hear from you. I do not have a lot on the Radke Family but I have some things that can be of help. The origin of the family appears to be Falkenberg, Pomerania which at the time they emigrated to America was under the control of the Brandenburg Empire or state. Pomerania is a large region along the southern shore of the Baltic, now partially in Northern Germany and Poland. The Polish name for the town/city is Zlocieniec, currently about 12,000 inhabitants.

I will copy/paste some things I have on the early family in hopes it goes through, otherwise send me a direct email at Thomas_Joseph_Radke@yahoo.com and I will resend.

If your relatives lived in Cottage grove, Minnesota then there is little doubt that we are distant cousins. It was a large family. Any Radke living in Cottage Grove, Hastings, Denmark Township (just east of Cottage Grove) or Washington County in general are related.
_________________________________________________________

A father, his wife and seven children came to the area of what is now Cottage Grove, Minnesota. Reasons for the move are unknown to me but if you look at http://www.execpc.com/~kap/pommern/ you can read up on the history of the Pommern heritage for possible clues. Try searching "pommeran" Pomeranian" etc. using this search engine: http://www.google.com/ and always put quotations around the searched subject for focus. The name Radke is Pomeranian, not German as everyone seems to believe, and the area of origin is along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea in Northwestern Poland but at the time of their immigration it was under the control of the House of Brandenburg in the Prussian Empire. They are a separate bloodline from the Germans, Poles and Russian peoples and are a Slavic people whose ancient origins are from somewhere in the eastern region of central Europe.
I have no details on their trip here but I understand the original farmstead may still stand along Hwy 61 in Cottage Grove. I have the address at home. I stopped by there once on a tip I had received from a first cousin of my father's. The place in nice shape but I have not verified if that is the original house for certain. The family has stay for the most part in the general area including Cottage Grove, Stillwater and Hastings. There are many Radke's buried in the area. I have walked through the old cemetery in Cottage Grove on Military Road and saw many Radke headstones.
I have also looked into on-line telephone listings for the Radke name in Pomerania and they are indeed some listings for Radke there as well as in surrounding countries. They seem to be located in Germany, Russia and Poland. I hope to visit there someday, I have found photos on-line and it's a unique-looking country, very rural and somewhat untouched by modern time. I am contemplating joining as Pomeranian genealogy society to help in my beginning research on my ancestry. I have a contact person who you might contact for additional help in your own research. I was given this at a German American picnic this past fall in St. Paul. His name is Paul Sternberg and has this email address: kingisif@concentric.com
The Radke Family reunion is held every 2 years on even years on the second Saturday of August in a county park in Hastings. I have attended several and, while they are not big shindigs by any means, I have enjoyed meeting all the extended members of my family, looking at all the photos in the albums brought by Marie Weiland (see below) as well as hearing the old stories. It's also amazing to look at total strangers and see the resemblance of myself and my family members.
The following is what I have from another of my father's cousins who has much more detailed information. I recommend that you contact her. She's the family historian and loves to talk about "us". She has family photo albums broken down into the groups descending from the original seven siblings.
Marie Weiland
1968 Ridge Lane
Hastings, MN 55033
(651) 437-8487
This is a skeleton outline for starters:
Karl Radke b.
