Hello Keven -

My great-great-great-grandparents were Archibald RAE & Marion WILSON. Archibald was b. Nov. 8 1795 in Barony, Glasgow, the 4th child of Matthew RAE and Janet BELL. He was Francis RAE's older brother and your Susannah (RAE) McWADE's uncle.

One of Archibald & Marion's 6 kids was my gg-gm Janet RAE, b. 1823-1824 in Glasgow. She married James GIBSON of Carstairs LKS in 1841 and shortly afterward emigrated to Upper Canada (Ontario). There are now dozens (probably hundreds) of their descendants all over Ontario, western Canada and the western US.

Your Susannah's birth record is presumably from the parish register, but where did the death record come from? When did she move back to Scotland after getting married? And why was she in Belfast in the first place?

It is very possible that the Jean, Henry and Frank RAE that you found in the graveyard are Susannah's younger stepsiblings, by Francis's second wife Janet WATSON. From the Old Parish Registers and the Glasgow censuses, Francis and Janet's 8th, 9th and 10th kids were Jane Guthrie RAE, b. Nov. 10 1859 Blythswood, Glasgow (apparently m. Andrew CARSTAIRS in 1899); Frank RAE, b. Jun. 15 1861 Milton, Glasgow (unmarried in 1901); and Henry Gardiner RAE, b. Jul. 17 1863 Milton, Glasgow (apparently not on the 1901 Census). Francis himself survived Janet by 3 years and died of apoplexy at age 88 on Sept. 15 1886 at 20 Allison St., Govanhill, Glasgow.

I have a lot of information on the RAEs, mostly from the OPRs, the post-1854 civil BDM records and the censuses, that I'd be happy to share.

Best regards,

David Thomson
Vancouver BC

Hello, - Definitely the same Susanna/Susannah Rae. I have her birth and death certificates and last year I visited her grave in Glasgow and also the adjoining grave of Jean,Henry and Frank Rae(I assume that this Frank is one of the elder children of Francis and Susannah Rae). I also went across to Belfast to the church (well, actually the newer church as the first one was burnt down)where Susannah married James Daniel McWade. One of their children,Mary Ann McWade, was my great-grandmother. Where do you fit in to the tree? My email address is youngnt@bigpond.com

Hello - I have a Susannah RAE b. Mar. 10 1825, the 4th child of Francis RAE and Susannah THOMSON, who were married on Oct. 16 1818 in Glasgow. Francis was b. Mar. 13 1798 in Barony, Glasgow, the son of Matthew RAE and Janet BELL. He was an upholsterer by trade. According to the 1841 Scottish Census, Susannah THOMSON was b. about 1800 in Ireland. She died in Nov. 1843, after having given birth to 11 children. On Nov. 10 1844 Francis married Janet WATSON in Glasgow. She was much younger (b. 1819) and she and Francis had 11 more children.

Susannah RAE appears on the 1841 Census, living with her parents and 3 siblings and her maternal grandmother (referred to only as "Widow THOMSON") at 124 Trongate St., in St. David's civil parish, Glasgow. Susannah does not appear again in the Scottish Censuses.

It seems quite possible that this Susannah and yours are the same person. Do you have any more information on yours?

Birth certificates were not in existance or even required before 1904 in most states so you won't find any. Delayed birth certificates were done through the court with witness affidavits to a birth usually given by a family member or other person who knew the mother and was present at the birth of the child.

Social Security cards and numbers ARE NOT birth certificates and are not always going to have parents names on them. Social Security Application forms do sometimes have parents names listed but SS was not around before the 1930s. You might try checking census records.

Mr James Rae, Merchant, Aberdeen, Scotland

The following article was in a edition of The Aberdeen (Scotland) Journal and may be of some use or interest to anyone researching the family. I have no known connection to this family.

The Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, January 18, 1899

DEATH OF MR JAMES RAE, MERCHANT

The news of the death of Mr James Rae, of Messrs James Rae and Sons, merchants, Aberdeen, which took place at his residence, Ythan Lodge, Great Western Road, at two o’clock yesterday morning, will come as a surprise to his many friends in the city and throughout the north. Mr Rae, as reported in the “Journal” of Monday, was severely burned on Saturday night by the bursting of a paraffin lamp which he had been removing from one part of the toilet table in his bedroom to another, but no serious result was anticipated from the injuries sustained. Mr Rae, however, never got over the shock, and as he suffered from weak action of the heart, the accident has had a fatal result.

Mr Rae, who was long identified with the commerce of the city, was the son of a farmer at Whitemyres, in the Skene district. He was educated at an academy in Aberdeen, and afterwards served his apprenticeship as a grocer with Messrs Lumsden and Gibson. Subsequently he started business on his own account in Summer Street, where he remained for a considerable number of years. Mr Rae afterwards removed to the shop 412 Union Street, recently occupied by Miss C. Macdonald, confectioner. Ultimately Mr Rae acquired the property at the junction of Bon-Accord Terrace and Union Street, where, at considerable expense, he erected a commodious place of business, and built up an extensive trade. Mr Rae devoted almost all his time to business, but although that was the case, he kept himself abreast of all the questions of the day, both local and imperial. Brusque in manner, but kindly and warm-hearted, Mr Rae was greatly liked by those who knew him intimately. A painful circumstance in connection with his death was that only a few days before he met with the accident which has proved fatal, Mr Rae had booked his passage to Cape Town. Thence he intended to proceed on a visit to his eldest son, Mr James, who is in business at Buluwayo. Mr Rae, who was 48 years of age, is survived by a widow, four sons, and a daughter. The eldest son, as mentioned, is in Buluwayo; the second and third, Mr George and Mr Alexander, are in their late father’s business; and the fourth is at school; while Miss Rae is at home.

1899 Deaths in the District of St Machar in the Burgh of Aberdeen

No. 59; James Rae, Grocer (Master) (married to Margaret Cruickshank), died 1899, January Seventeenth at 2h 0m am at 327 Great Western Road, Aberdeen, male, age 47 years. Parents: Mitchell Rae, Farmer (deceased) & Janet Rae ms Vass (deceased). Cause: Severe burns to legs, hands, neck and face – Shock – Syncope as cert by J. Scott Riddell M.B. Informant: George C. Rae, Son and Inmate (present). Registered 1899, January 18th at Aberdeen by James Meston, Registrar. (See Reg. of Corr. Entries Vol. XI Page 98, January 24th 1899.)
My father Claude Rae, was born in Toronto 1920, His father William Rae was born in Aberdeen, Scotland somewhere between 1878 - 1880. I have no knowledge of when he entered Canada, he
passed away prior to 1942. When I do not know, nor where. Records show that he was married to Geneva Bourne (from Ireland). I believe that William did at some time live in the U.S. Any connections or comments would be helpful.

can anyone help me? i am trying to trace The Rae Family, from Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland! it begins with William Rae, born 1841 who married Isabella Rae (nee Ferguson!). they had children: Jane, born 1861, John, born 1863, Isabella, born 1864, Elisabeth, born 1866, Agnes, born 1872, Walter, born 1874, Euphemia, born 1878, William, born 1881,& Barbara, born 1884. i believe that the son John, born 1863, died in infancy, as there was another child recorded as John, born 1870! the daughter Isabella, had an illegitimate child, Alexander, born in 1885! She then went on to marry a David Watson, also of Shotts! thank you for taking an interest!

Re: Marriage/Death cert

My suggestion would be to order the Death Certificate. They usually list both parents and where they were born. You need to order them from the county where the person died.

Some Marriage Certificates have little or no info, it depends on the city. You might call and ask what info is on the Marriage Certificates where you are trying to get them from. The county is also the place to start. Also some counties have online searches and info for these.
Olive I. Rae (AKA Ollie Rae Foster) of Nebraska and Oregon

I'm trying to find out a middle name for Olive I. "Ollie" Rae, daughter of Adam and Julia Rae.

I am also trying to find out if Julia Rae is Julia Edith "Eda" Champion.

Does anyone have access to historical Nebraska birth certificates, or original (not computerized) Oregon delayed birth certificates? I'm trying to confirm where Olive Rae was born in Nebraska, her middle name, and her mother's name. I would also like to find her obituary, if one exists, or a date of death.

A record on the Oregon Archive website that sounds like her has a last name of "Forster," which may be a misspelling of her married name of Foster:

Case# 24272
Name Forster, Ollie Inley Rae
Date 11/14/1880
Record Type Delayed Birth
County Hood River
Source Health

Ollie FOSTER
Birth Date: 14 Nov 1880
Death Date: Sep 1975
Social Security Number: XXX-XX-XXXX
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Oregon
Death Residence Localities
ZIP Code: 97031
Localities: Dee, Hood River, Oregon
Hood River, Hood River, Oregon

I want to find out if this is her birth certificate, and if so, what were the names of her parents, and where was she born.

Adam Rae is listed in the Census as her father, and he is listed as married to Julia Rae in the 1880 Census, but he later appears with a Eda Rae (also as Ada Rae). I'm wondering if Eda might be Julia's nickname, possibly a moniker for Edith.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Lea

G’day, I’m looking for any Rae’s that come from the Maxwell Gordon Rae line.
BORN: 5-Aug-1833 in Tipperty, Aberdeenshire to William Rae & Jean Rae (smith)

Maxwell is my Great Great Grandfather’s Brother.
Any information about this side of the Rae Family would be fantastic as I know nothing about them. Please feel free to get in contact with me as it would be good to hear from some kin.

Thanks
G’day, I’m looking for information regarding the Rae family.
I think they were in the Aberdeenshire area, as i have no records of birth's & death etc.

Mainly on William Rae (1799-1875) who married Jean Smith & William’s farther, William Rae who married Elizabeth Morris (who died young) he then re-married a Barbara Milne.

Sorry I don’t have any more dates. I have information from the 1600’s till now but it’s patchy at best.
Any help that could be provided would be fantastic.

Thanks
