Susanna Rafferty/ James Brown Girvan /Wigtownshire

i am seeking any information of the aforementioned- they are my GGgrandparents- I have discovered that they had approx 11 children, married in Girvan and went to Leswalt in the mid 1860s. Any info on them before during or after would be great.
They both originated from Ireland but I know not where. We beieve James may have come via Manchester as he was listed as a cotton weaver but this is a tenuous link.
Susanna appeared on the 1841 census so probably came over as a toddler from ireland.
help please!

Marc, thank you for your reply. My Rafferty's started with Martin, b 1810, and Honora (tho somewhere I read her name might be Nancy) b. 1820, both born in Ireland. One son was Nicholas, one daughter was Bridget M., both of those were born in Ireland. I believe that Bridget was born in 1843, have to check my notes also. She married John Fitzgibbon in Louisville, Ky. and they lived there. She died and is buried in Louisville. He seemed to evaporate into thin air. I had never found where he is buried, Bridget is buried with two of their children, Clinton, and Mary. Nicholas lived in Princeton, Ind. with his wife, Margaret and their children and they are buried there. Nicholas and Margaret are my ggrandparents. If you need more detailed info, write to me at judyfuss@aol.com, and I will look up all the dates etc. for you. Please do keep in touch. Thanks.
Judy

Judy,

I couldn't really follow this message string since it appears that some correspondence took place outside of the message board, but I detected that you had Rafferty family in the Louisville area. Many of my Rafferty family settled in and around the Louisville area, with my particular branch staying mostly in Leitchfield, Kentucky.

My Rafferty's immigrated from Ireland in 1845, and there is evidence that they were from County Monaghan. I don't find Honora or Anna in my tree, but I don't go very far back with my Rafferty genealogy - only about five generations.

If you have a male cousin who still carries the Rafferty surname, I would encourage you to consider DNA testing. I have submitted my Rafferty DNA to Family Tree DNA and my genetic profile is in the database there. Of the seven Rafferty's who have submitted DNA, I have matched none of them. If we match, then we know that our two Rafferty lines link up back in Ireland. Just a thought.

In the meantime, I would be happy to share my tree information with you to see if you hit on anything familiar.

Thanks!

Marc Rafferty
Oklahoma

Thank you for your reply, do you have any idea where they were from, or born? Thanks. I can't seem to find out anything about them. Do you have their childrens names. I have posted what I know on ancestry.com. Where did you find the information that Honora's name was Cullinan, and do you have anything else pertaining to them? My Grandmother was their grandaughter, her name was Anna E. Rafferty.
Thank you for that information. Please keep in touch.
Judy Fuss

I have just read your message on the message board.I have been researching my wife's family and her great-great- great-grandmother was Eliza O'Rafferty(nee Quirk) born in Ireland in 1827/8. She married Edmund Green in Manchester on 26 February 1849. Eliza's father was Michael Quirk a farmer. Edmund and Eliza emigrated to Christchurch in New Zealand. Their son Lester married Elizabeth Atkinson there in 1881. I only received Eliza and Edmund's marriage certificate less than 2 weeks ago. Please contact me as I think we may have the same relative.I am willing to share all the information I have with you.
Anthony Bovaird

I believe that I have information on this line. My mother's mother died in the 1918 flu epidemic. My grandfatehr, Gordon Hayes, remarried when my mom was 3 yrs old. He married Jennie Hayes Bowen (who lost her husband in the same epidemic), the daughter of James Rafferty Jane Gilleo. She was, in effect, my 'real' grandmother....so in doing research on my own lines, I have also done work on her line. She was a wonderful woman. She and her 1st husband, Harry Royal Bowen, 5 children. Gordon Hayes had 2 children by his 1st wife. Together, then had 4 more children. All 11 children were raised as brothers and sister. gail swota @ pgswota@verizon.net

I was wondering if you found out anything more on your James Rafferty? The only info I have on my GGrandfather James Rafferty is that he was born circa 1842, Ireland. Married Bridget Malone, born circa 1844, Ireland. Find them 1st time on 1870 NY Federal Census with daughter Mary Ann, born 1868, Manhattan, NY. Also find them on 1880 Fed. Census, Brooklyn, NY with another daughter, Teresa (my Grandmother) James's occupation was a Cooper. Can't find James & Bridget after that. No family to ask anymore. Hoping maybe a connection can be made. Thanks, Irene

I knew some of the Current's also. I also have photos of the Current/Case cemetery in Brown county. I used to help Tressy when I was in High school. I also knew some of her sisters, they were a crazy fun group. Let me know if you want more info, maybe we can call each other. Much to much to type!

Nancy may have been a cousin, as her sisters were Mrs. Alex Pickle, Mrs. Margaret Ibberson, Mrs. MInerva Lee and William H Raverty. Read the reply I posted to William Raverty.

Sorry William, I goofed! NOW I have the right info. My Great Grandfather and Grandmother were MYRON E. Pickle, married to Rose Ann Raverty. She is buried in Home Cememtery in Sleepy Eye MN. Her siblings were Mrs. Alex Pickle, (I guess we had brothers marrying sister) of Sleepy Eye, Mrs Margaret Ibberson living on farm north of town, William H Raverty, living south of town and Mrs Minerva Lee of Pentywood Montana. When she was six she came to Henderson MN with her parents and the family stayed there until she was 18, then they moved to Brown county and settling in Golden Gate. Her children were Mrs. Elizabeth McCoy, Mrs. Rose Case, Mrs. Pearl Schere of Essig, Mrs. Maude Case, (my grandmother) Ella McFerian and George. I remeber most of my grandmother's siblings from when I was younger. Rose Ann's father was George Raverty. I have a photo of my grandmother standing by their log home, or what was left of it, when tey lived in Jessenland Township, Sibley county. She was born in Kingston, Quebec. The last weedend in April we are having a Pickle reunion in Fairfax MN and quite a few Raverty descendents will be there. Hope this is helpful, Catherine Case Wellman

We all hail from Minnesota and are having a Pickle reunion in Fairfax Mn in April. Just now I am packing away all our "stuff" and don't have access to the Pickle history, but can find out more if needed. I would love to go to Ireland next year and search for family history or relatives. Hope you had a great time!

Suspect George and his wife met when they lived near Henderson MN or in Sleepy Eye. There is a Pickle reunion this April in Fairfax MN and we Raverty descendents will be attending. Sorry I don't have my Pickle history handy, but can do further searching.

Anyone with connections to the Rafferty's/Hussey's of Ballymahon, Longwood, Castlerickard, Co. Meath? My great grandmother on my mother's paternal side was Mary Rafferty, who was a twin with Julia Rafferty, born in Ballymahon, Longwood, Castlerickard, Co. Meath on 23rd April 1891. Her father was James Rafferty (1864) and her mother was Anne Hussey (1867). Mary Rafferty married into the Coughlan family (James, as far as I'm aware) in Maynooth in the 1920's. Mary Rafferty's siblings were, though it is not a complete list, are Julia (twin sister), Michael (1894), Anne (1896), Agnes (1897), Christopher (1898) and Josephine (1900). I would certainly would like to learn more on my connection.

Looking for information on 4 Rafferty brothers who came to US approx 1842-43. Names are James (born 1802), Patrick (born 1815), Thomas (dates unknown), and John (born 1814). James married Mary Dowdle, Patrick married Catherine Reilly (Riley?). John married Julie (Celia?) Bradley. John is my GGGrandfather. All these people eventually migrated to the Kenosha Co., Wisconsin, USA area. It is our belief that the 4 Rafferty brothers came from Westmeath and that their mother may have been Bridget McAvery). Any further information on any of the above mentioned persons would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at judithameyer@yahoo.com.
