Hi I have looked and looked for my relative Eli Ragan who was born in 1764 and died in 1807. He lived in Ashe Co. North Carolina and his wife was Mary Stewart. He is related to my relative Absalom Ragon of the early 1800s who died in Arkansas. Does anyone know anything about him or is he included in either of Donald Reagan's books?

It extended from three to four miles on each side of the river. ...”

“When the settlement commenced, or whence came the great body of settlers, it is out of my power to say with certainty. Certain it is that ... John Reagin ... were residents of the same tract of country before or during the revolution, and were Friends or were ranked as such by descent.”

From “Minutes of the county Court1785-1798” for Newberry County, South Carolina, John Ragan was appointed as the one of several road commissioners “to lay out” the road from the “Widow Reases at the head of Bever-dam Creek” to the ferry on Saluda River at June court 1786.

There have had been three lawsuits filed by different parties against him from December court 1789 to July Court 1797 in Newberry District, South Carolina.

John Ragan was listed as the head of household in 1790 Federal Census of Newberry District, South Carolina. There were one (1) white male over 16; two (2) white females all ages in the household.

It appeared that he must have died before 19 Jun 1800 in the environs of Beaverdam Creek in Newberry District, South Carolina. Death date was gleaned from John Ragan’s Intestate papers at Newberry County Courthouse, Newberry, South Carolina. (Newberry County, South Carolina Will Book “C”, pages 73-75 and 80-81.)

His eldest son, Joseph Ragan, was appointed as the administrator of John Ragan’s estate by the Probate Court of Newberry County, South Carolina. There was the letter of administration which was issued to Joseph Ragan. And there was the inventory and the sale for John Ragan’s estate.

It is most likely that he was buried beside his wife in unmarked graves at the Reagan/Reagin family cemetery near Silverstreet, Newberry County, South Carolina.

Notes for Elizabeth Edwards:
Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Edwards and Sarah (?_____?) of Frederick County, Virginia.

His wife, Elizabeth Edwards Ragan, survived. She was listed as the head of household in 1800 Federal Census of Newberry District, South Carolina. There were one (1) white male and one (1) white female 10-16; and one (1) white female 45 and up in the household.

Approximate death year was gleaned from John Ragan’s Intestate Papers at Newberry Courthouse, Newberry, South Carolina. It appeared that she died after that date in the environs of Beaverdam Creek in Newberry County, South Carolina.

It is most likely that she was buried beside her husband in unmarked graves at the Reagan/Reagin family cemetery near Silverstreet, Newberry County, South Carolina.

I think a lot of families passed through KY and stayed for a little rest then moved on to flatter land and less trees to cut down.
Have you connected your mother's line back to KY?

I found a Jacob and Mary Ragan in Virginia in 1784.
I also found a little girl named Magdalene (Molly) Ragan who appears to have been adopted by a man (no wife mentioned)named Frederick Buzzard. This man died July 11 1812 and left all 8 children, a son named Jacob also mentioned.

In another document Christopher Leek d. 2-2-1778 and leaves his daughter, Catrika Leek to Jacob Ragan's eldest daughter and the daughters name was not given.

This Jacob also witnessed the sale of some land in Augusta Co., VA in 1783.

Yes, I read everything I could find about the Kansas City, MO settlement. Great story.
I liked the story of that family so much...I named my cat "Greenberry". I thought it went well with "Cherryberry, Blueberry, Strawberry, Blackberry". The next stray cat that steps onto my property is going to be named "Coffee Rice".
Gayle

My research is mostly Jackson County Mo. I have looked at how the various families connect with other Kentucky families. My interest in the Ragan's is my mother was a Ragan. Jacob is my 3rd great grandfather.
I haven't come across a Mildred. That is interesting because I had an aunt Mildred. Never heard about her being named after anyone.
Are you aware that Jacob was one of the founders of Kansas City? Actually it was the Town of Kansas which became Kansas City.
Mickey

This is great!

You are very kind.

Do you research a Kentucky line specifically?
Mickey...thanks for the sister information. That helps to broaden the search. I just ran across several Ragan girls married during the early 1800's in Fayette Co., KY Two on the same day.
Anna Chastain Carter...thought that looked odd when I typed it.
Thanks again.
Thanks Larry for the update. I'm starting on my Ragans to verify data and do more extensive research with the new records on Ancestry.com.

I had tried to contact you a couple years ago. My Aunt Sylvia, Welby's oldest child and 1st daughter, was able to help me identify the majority of the people in that group family photo taken about 1910. I'll post the information in a day or two, if you are still interested. I hope to be able to contact you in the coming months as I got farther back in the Ragan line.

Let's stay in touch. Cynthia

Cynthia,
I have been doing Genealogy pretty regularly since I retired in 2007.
You mentioned Jessamine CO. Some of my (other) family were born in Jessamine Co., which later became Montgomery Co. As the history unfolds, the other family and my Ragans are actually living very close to each other. Just a thought...since my grandfathers house ended up being half in Montgomery and half in Bath Co. The county formations in KY are numerous and a little crazy!
I tend to follow those namesakes...being Irish they kept their traditional names very well! There was a nickname used for my Ragan (Williams)...Willie...even a couple girls went by "Willie". The boys went by a middle initial ie Will T., Will A. etc. Do you have any of those nicknames?
There is also some passing along of trades...some of my Ragans were carpenters and builders from one generation to the next. And horses! And big farms!
I have lost this record that was on a disc...the story of the four (?) Ragan brothers who made their living smuggling goods to the early settlers who were not supposed to be living on King George's land. I know one ended up in KY and one in TN. Would your TN family be connected to an area known as Clover Valley?
I have always suspected that Jacob Ragan was a clue to connecting the KY and TN group. Oddly enough, the picture of Jacob Ragan is almost a perfect likeness of my own father...and others in his family. And, Jacob ends up living a few farms away from my William Alfred's widow, Milldred (Milly) before he takes off for the west. He just comes out of nowhere, stays a few years, then moves on. Jacob was dealing in horses. Do you have a "Greenberry" in your Ragan family? Odd name...has a sort of gothic Irish sound to it.
My William died around 1809 in Montgomery Co., KY His sister (Sarah) died about 1855 and listed her father as "Alfred" Ragan. She was in her 90's when she died. She was the matriarch of the family in KY. Do you have any Sarah Ragans? Or, Charles, after 1865?
Would love to connect the TN bunch...it would certainly open a big window to a lot of history.
Thanks so much for the reply. Gayle

Gayle,
Thanks for your response. I don't have an Alfred in my file and I have 4 William's. One was born in 1856 in Pulaski County and died in 1940 possibly in Jessamine County. The other 3 were all born in Tennessee. They must have all been related somewhere back in the past but who knows where or when? So many spellings, so many people with the same given names and so few records that give all the family members names prior to 1850. I have unconfirmed information that the 1st of my Ragan's to come to America was Daniel Regan who was born in County Cork, Ireland about 1626 and died in Surry County, Virginia in 1687.

Larry Jones

Godbey was from the Casey or Lincoln area as this is a common name here.
Do you subscribe to the Kentucky Explorer? May have seen GG in a past issue...they have a page for people looking for ancestors.
My Ragans are from Montgomery and Bath Counties. The first into KY was Alfred and William...haven't seen a Michael or Samuel in my line...sorry.
Clues from Dr. James Americus Ragan's handwritten journal

I find the missing clues from the handwritten journal of Dr. James Americus Ragan/Reagan recently. This Dr. James Americus Ragan/Reagan was Methodist preacher according from my research correspondents.

Several items were gleaned from Dr. James Amercius Ragan's hand-written journal.
1.) It mentioned "cousin, F. Hood."
[My Note: This "F. Hood" was Francis Marion Hood, son of Nathaniel Hood and Abigail Ragan. *Abigail Ragan was the sister to Daniel Wright Ragan, father of Dr. James Americus Ragan.]

2.) It mentioned "Uncle John Reagan." "He is a very aged man."
[My Note: This "Uncle John Reagan" was John Reagan (b 1772) who married Eliza Jane Hood. He was living in 1850 Federal Census of Blount County, Tennessee. And he was the son of Darby Daniel and Elizabeth ?Wright? Ragan. *John Ragan was the eldest brother to Daniel Wright Ragan, father of Dr. James Americus Ragan.]

3.) It mentioned "cousin, James Swan."
[My Note: This "cousin James Swan" was James Denny Swan. He was married to Isabella G. Ragan, daughter of Nathaniel Hood and Abigail Ragan. *Abigail Ragan was the sister to Daniel Wright Ragan, father of Dr. James Americus Ragan.

With all the clue that I have gotten from Dr. James Americus Ragan's handwritten journal, it has convinced me that I was on the right track. So, I have gotten the family of Darby Daniel Ragan and his wife Elizabeth ?Wright? straighten out now.

I have corresponded with several direct descendants of Daniel Wright Ragan (son of Darby Daniel Ragan) and his wife Elizabeth Scruggs. I have been given the photocopy of the source which showed the name of his grandfather. The name of Dr. James Americus Ragan's grandfather is Darby Ragan. And, the copy of 1889 letter to John Henninger Reagan (my Ragan/Reagan relative) mentioned the family story from Dr. James Americus Ragan about his father's family. With these information, I was able to link all data from four areas; namely, Berkeley County, Virginia; Rockingham County, Virginia; Greene County, Tennessee; and Blount County, Tennessee for the family of Darby Daniel Ragan and his wife Elizabeth ?Wright?.

I thought I better share what I have found so found on the family of Darby Daniel Ragan [brother to Timothy Ragan, III - Revolutionary War soldier (my direct ancestor)]. There are a lot of other sources that I was able to put it all together on that Darby Daniel Ragan's family too.
I am looking for any information on (5) or (4) great-grandfathers. They lived in Person County,Nc James Ragin or his son John Regan. The spelling is different for the last names.I have only found a marriage bond for James Ragin in 1820 marriage to a Betsey Jones(Elizabeth). Also his son John Regan I found a census for in 1850 & 1860. They are listed a mulatto. He was married to a Elisia and they had a daughter named Roan or Rowan. But I cannot find any addition information about him. If you have any information that can assist me please let me know.

Many, many trees on this site claim this person and have entered a death year of 1827. I find no evidence that supports that data, and, in fact, the so-called 'geneologists' have failed to research far enough to find him still alive in the 1850 census and living with Keziah Shaw Ragan whom he married in 1812 in Davidson co.

Step up and support your claims! Where did you get the 1827 date? How do make ANY claims to descending from him?

Please offer intelligent, helpful information. If you can't, please delete him from your so-called tree and avoid misleading other researchers.

Re: Jesse Ragan/Reagan/Reagin of Abbeville County, South Carolina

Do you have further information on the son Bailey Ragan? I believe he moved to Mississippi. A Baily Ragan was recorded in the 1830 census in Abbeville County with his wife, 2 daughters, and 4 sons. Apparently Bailey moved to Oktibbeha County, MS, in the early 1830s, where he patented 200 acres of land and died. In the 1840 census in Oktibbeha County, a Nancy Ragan was listed with 3 daughters and 5 sons. The two additional children had been born before 1835. In the 1850 census of Oktibbeha County, three of the five sons were listed in one household: 22 year old Jesse with his 16 year old wife Emmy, 28 year old John, and 18 year old Young. By 1860 these three brothers were all married and living in neighboring Choctaw County, MS. Jesse and Young were Confederate soldiers and probably died in the Civil War. John was the only one in Choctaw County in later years. Jesse's wife Emmy was Emmeline Elizabeth Weeks, sister of my great-grandfather. An 1875 courthouse fire in Oktibbeha County destroyed early probate and marriage records. Thus, there are no surviving estate records for either Bailey or his apparent wife Nancy.

Hello,
I am a descendant of NON-Irish Ragans who settled in varying areas of PA. I know many ended up in Hazleton and Johnstown areas. They are listed oftentimes as Austrian, Hungarian and Polish, depending on timeframe, due to changes in the borders of those countries. If you are a non-Irish Ragan, there is a good chance we are related; PLEASE contact me via email at lizzytobias@hotmail.com or via PM here.

Thank you,
Meg Watt

According to Rev War Vet Jesse Ragan's rejected pension claim, he was born in 1754 and his wife Mary was born 1761-1764 according to Census records. I have found an estate settlement for Jesse Ragan dated 1840 in Person Co., NC but have not ordered it from the NC State Archives. There were a few other Ragan's in the area at the time......Nathan Ragan, John Ragan Sr and Jr. So while I don't think your Jesse Ragan and my Jesse Ragan were the same person. I just found the proof of Jesse Ragan being a son in law of David Wilkerson Sr so I've not done any original research on Jesse Ragan.

Charlie Rathbun
Jasper, Ga

I have a Jesse Crowder Ragan in my family tree but find that he married Elenor "Nellie" Parrish. He was born in1775 in Person, NC and died Aug. 1833 in Humphrey, Tn. Could this be the same person with maybe two wives? Found a American Revolutionary War Rejected Pension record that says Jesse Ragan was rejected because he did not serve in a military capacity.

Rev War Vet Jesse Ragan of Person Co. NC

My name is Charlie Rathbun, and I descend from James Wilkerson (ca. 1775-1818) who married Sarah Sanford in Granville Co., NC in 1802. James Wilkerson was the son of David Wilkerson Sr. (ca. 1735-1819) and an unknown wife.

David Wilkerson Sr. died in Granville Co., NC leaving a will only naming one daughter, Elizabeth Parrish, and several grandchildren. From deeds, and estate settlements, I've been able to find most of his 10 children.

However, I have just recently uncovered an add from an old North Carolina newspaper (The Star) from Genealogybank.com that gives the names of all 10 of his children as well as spouses for the married daughters.

Here it is:

"State of North Carolina
Granville County

Superior Court of Law, March Term AD 1820

David J. Young ex'r of David Wilkerson Sen'r dec'd vs. David Wilkerson, Heirs of Wm Wilkerson, Lewis Wilkerson, Heirs of George Wilkerson, John Wilkerson, Heirs of James Wilkerson, Jesse Ragan and wife Mary, Kader Parish (probably a misspelling of Elkanah/Elcaner Parrish) and wife ____ (we know from David Wilkerson Sr's 1819 will that this is Elizabeth), John Eastwood and wife Salley, and Susannah Wilkerson. Petition to emacipate negroe slave, Daniel.

It appearing to the satisfaction to this court that the heirs of William Wilkerson, George Wilkerson, and John Wilkerson are not inhabitants of this state; ordered that publication be made in the Star for four weeks, that unless the defendants, non residents as aforesaid, come forward before the judge of our said court, to be held for the county aforesaid, at the court house in Oxford on the first Monday of September next. and file their answer thereto, the petition will be taken pro coufesso and hoarde exparte

Witness, William M. Sneed, Clerk of said Court Office 1st day of March A. D. 1820

William M. Sneed"

So...the 10 Children of David Wilkerson Sr. were:

1. John Y. Wilkerson Sr. (bef 1765-1826) married Unknown and had 8 children.

2. David Wilkerson Jr. (bef 1765-1825) married Sarah Pettypool Jones (was a widow and had married previously to Edmund Jones) daughter of John Pettypool and Sarah Sanford

3. Mary Wilkerson (1761-1764- after 1820)..married Rev. War Vet Jesse Ragan and moved to that part of Caswell County that later became Person County, NC

4. Susannah Wilkerson (bef 1765-after 1820) not married in 1820 and probably one of the two over 45 females in David Wilkerson Sr's 1810 household

5. William Wilkerson (ca. 1766-1817) married Martha "Patsey" Pettypool (ca. 1755-1836) daughter of John Pettypool and Sarah Sanford

6. Sarah "Salley" Wilkerson (ca. 1770-???) married John Eastwood in 1791 in Granville Co., NC. She may have died as John Eastwood's wife at the time of his death in 1836 was a Mary Eastwood.

7. Lewis Wilkerson (ca. 1772-1847) married Jane Harris, daughter of John Harris Sr. and a sister to his brother George's wife, Henrietta Harris. He owned considerable property in both Granville and Person Counties, NC.

8. George Wilkerson (ca.1773-1804) married Henrietta Harris, daughter of John Harris Sr. and a sister to his brother Lewis's wife, Jane Harris.

9. James Wilkerson (ca. 1775-1818) married Sarah Sanford, daughter of Robert Sanford and Ann Jones, in 1802 in Granville Co., NC. This is my line of Wilkersons.

10. Elizabeth Wilkerson (ca1777-???) married Elkanah/Elcaner Parrish and removed to Dickson Co., TN. after 1820.

As shown above, brothers Lewis and George Wilkerson married Harris sisters....Jane and Henrietta Harris respectively...daughters of John Harris Sr. Well....Abel Parrish also married a daughter of John Harris Sr.....Mary Harris. So this not only makes the Wilkersons "In Laws" to the Parrish Family by their marriage of Elkanah Parrish to Elizabeth Wilkerson, but Lewis Wilkerson was also an "In Law" to Abel Parrish through the Harris Family.

Overton Parrish of Person Co., NC also married a cousin of theirs....Sarah "Sally" Wilkerson...in Person County. Sally Wilkerson was the daughter of John W. Wilkerson (1759-1845) and Sarah Unknown. John W. Wilkerson was the son of John Wilkerson (1730-1806) who was a brother of David Wilkerson SR.

I'd be very interested in corresponding with you on this family.

Charlie Rathbun
Jasper, GA

I would be interested in information about or corresponding with a Ginger Loretta Ragan. All I know is that she was born prior to March 5, 1965 in California.
I was cleaning out some old paperwork that had belonged to my mother when I came across a receipt for a copy of Ginger's birth certificate from the Sacramento County Health Dept. There is no pertinent info on the receipt other than the date and Ginger's name.
I am curious why my mother would have paid for a copy of her birth certificate. I have never heard that we had any connection to the Ragan surname.
My family was stationed at Mather AFB at the time if that narrows things down.
Thanks, Tamara
