Hello, My husband's great grandfather was Christian Michael Herley. His grandfather was John Herley (one of Christian's sons. I don't know if you're still looking for information but I might be able to help you and I'm pretty sure you can help me. I have a diary record written by Bartholmew Ragatz describing their journey to America. Perhaps we can help each other. If you're interested please contact me. For some reason, I haven't been able to find out John Herley changed the spelling of his name to Hurley. Donna Hurley

John Ragatz, born about 1870, of Sauk Co., WI, son of Thomas

I have an original Cabinet Portrait photo of John Ragatz, taken about 1885-1890 which I would like to get back to family members. Photo was taken in Prairie du Sac (Sauk Co.) WI, and shows John about age 16-18. I found him in 1880 census in Sauk Co., son of Thomas and Chatharina. By 1920, a John J. Ragatz lived with wife Anna and sons in Madison (Dane Co.) WI.

If John is in your family, email me at margerice@prodigy.net.

Re: Catherine Ragatz and Christian Michael Herley

This is the information i have on the Herley family from the Salem Church history. Christian Michael Herley was born in Wurttemberg, Germany, in Nov, 1809. In 1842 he married Catherine Ragatz and they lived in Sauk City and later on the Jerabek farm in West Point township. His principal occupation was tailoring and raising grapes.( There is a winery in Prairie du Sac on a sight that raised grapes and made wine when Prairie was settled) They had eleven children, but lost several with tuberculosis. They were members of the Reformed church that was organized in Sauk City.
