Hello Family,
I see that we aren't writing as much as we were. I had the opportunity to visit Liberty Hill's cemetary yesterday and I saw many graves and headstones in bad condition. I took the liberty of discussing having some of the stones repaired with the people who put monuments down. We fixed one that is in my branch of the family. I encourage you to look when you visit next and look into having the stones repaired, graves cleaned and filled in. The stone I fixed yesterday was there for 100 years and is marble. I look forward to going back and cleaning the stone. These people are are ancesters and they deserve to have decent graves, please take this up with your family. Mark unmarked graves with at least a small marker. If you need help with reseaching dates of birth and deaths let me know and I will help you.

Thanks,
Sheila Y. Ragin
SRagin1@yahoo.com

Hi, Nakyia. I do have a Mary Ragin [maiden surname Richardson] who was married to Robert Ragin. As far as I know, they lived in Clarendon County.

My research results are tentative, but I believe that Mary Richardson's parents were Henry Richardson and Susan [maiden surname unknown], and that she had a sister named Susan.

Mary and Robert Ragin's children included Moutrene Ragin, Robert Ragin, Dorothy Ragin, Annette Ragin, and John Ragin. The dates of birth and death I have are:

Robert Ragin Sr [1906-?] ~ Died in ?
Mary Richardson Ragin [1907-1993] ~ Died in Pinewood, Clarendon County, South Carolina
Moutrene Ragin Patterson [1931-2005] ~ Died in Queens County, New York
Dorothy Ragin Fludd [1933-1976] ~ Died in ?
Annette Ragin Grimes [1937-1994] ~ Died in ?
John Ragin [1948-1981] ~ Died in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia
Robert Ragin Jr [??-??] ~ Died in ?

If any of these individuals are a part of your family tree, please let me know. Thank you.

Spivey

To: Janice C Heidt

Your post mentions two surnames I am researching: Felder and Ragin.

The Felder family is from Orangeburg, South Carolina. Some of the surnames associated with this family are: Coleman; Edwards; Mathews; and Spurlock.

The Ragin family is from Clarendon, South Carolina. Some of the surnames associated with this family are: Fludd; Grimes; and Patterson.

Is it possible your ancestors are related to either of these families? Thanks for any information you can provide.

SpiveyEdwards

please forgive my typos in that last post ....by the time you can tell that i have been up all night researching the name Ragin.

I do remember more information.
My grandmother had extreme difficulty providing documentation of her birth because she did not have a birth certificate. It was said that one woman delivered all the black babies and either omitted the information from the registry or recorded it under the wrong date. However, proff of her birth ws eventually obtained from a census done in the 1920's which listed her as 5 years old. The gov't has allowed her to use this as official documentation of her birth. However we know this to also be wrong because that would make her the same age as her older sister. Never the less does anyone know of a story where one woman was running aroung either sumpter or st pauls Ssouth carolina delivering all the black babies.

My grandmother also recall other names of male Ragins such as :
Thomas, David, Elijah, David, Mamie ( my g'ma 1st cousin) Aunt Sarah... Um my cousin Stine (sp?) in Philadelphia is a related to us via the Ragin from her father.
I have cousins with the last name Briggs because a Ragin married a Briggs ( i think aunt Sarah was a Briggs).

Hi
I'm looking for information regarding the Ragin fmily from Scouth Carolina.
My grandmother mentioned Sumner or Sumpter and St. Paul . Her mothers name was Mary Ragin. I believe there to be blackfoot indian lineage in the Ragin family especially from the pictures I saw of my great grandmother.
Can you point me in the right direction, my grandmother suffers from demensia and cant recal much most of the time
Thanks
Nakyia

Hi and thanks for the reply. I appreciate all your help.

I was able to get some more information from my grandmother today about her parents and grandparents. Forgive me if I am only able to get this info is small spurts.

My grandmother was born in South Carolina ( the city begins with an S) She is unsure where she was born but says she has family in St Pauls and Sumpter. At birth her name was Elizabeth Ethel-Lee Anderson.

Everyone calls her Ethel and that the name on most of documents since moving North to NYC.
Her parents were Mary Ragin and Hamp Anderson. She moved with both her parents to Bennettsville, SC as a child.

Her maternal grandparents were Wash Ragin and a woman with the surname Oliver.

Her mom had many siblings that she did not all of them. The names she is able to re-call are Ferdinan, James and Sarah Ann. Her aunt Sarah Anne married into the Briggs family.

As I read through more of the post I believe you used to be in communication with a Linda Cook. My grandmother's sister is known as Linda Cook. Her birth name was Lily Mae Anderson and she married into the Cook surname. Apparently, Lily Mae was too country for the NYC lifestyle and she changed her name (not legally of course) to Linda !
I believe the Linda Cook that posted to this board in the past is my great Aunt but I have yet to call her and ask questions.

Do you have any informationm related to anything I stated above.

Hi. I am sorry, but I really have no information to help you. John Felder Ragin was my great-uncle by marriage, and I have done no research on his family because he was not a blood relation to me. I am looking for his grandchildren/great-grandchildren because I have a book I would like to return to them.

Good luck on your research. I did check his information in the 1920 census, and he said his father was from Georgia and his mother was from Florida. That is all I know.

And get some sleep!!!!

DNA Project

Ragin/s, Ragain/s, Riggan/s, Riggen/s males from anywhere in the world are invited to contact the Riggins Family DNA project if they would be willing to submit a tiny sample of their cells taken from a painless cheek scraping in their own home.

The Riggins Family DNA project is ongoing at Family Tree DNA, a company primarily dedicated to helping genealogists find relationships beyond what is available in the written record. Family Tree DNA uses a lab associated with the University of Arizona, and results are private and confidential. This is not the stuff of paternity suits or CSI, and a person can never be personally identified by their sample.

The male Y chromosome is extracted from this simple mouth swab and is as unique as a fingerprint. Unlike a fingerprint, which differs from one person to another, the Y chromosome is passed virtually unchanged from father to son for many generations. DNA analysis can with scientific certainty say that your ancestors are or are not related to someone else’s ancestors. We are hoping to clarify many years of painstaking paper research by dedicated genealogists and formerly independent researchers by sorting out different Family Trees and therefore helping many of our Tribes by these means.

For more information, contact the project administrator of the Riggins Family DNA Project, George E. Riggins, Jr., at geriggins@verizon.net. For more information on DNA testing, or to join the project, contact Family Tree DNA at www.familytreedna.com.
