Thank you for responding. I will add your information on Eli's brother, George, to my FTM file. I received the following information from Vernon Vogt:

Vernon Vogt Email to Bill Ragon, Ancestry Ragon Message Board Re: Ragons in IL IN and OHIO 5 Jul 2003 12:33 PM GMT

Eli Ragon was born July 30, 1778 on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, At some point the family moved to Virginia where they were until about 1806. In 1807, Eli signed an "estray book" in Franklin Township, Ross Co., Ohio. Two other Ragon signatures appear in this book, There is a John and a Jeese Ragon. Who are they? Possible brothers? Also is 1807 my GGGG Grandgather John was born to Eli and Rebecca in Ross County.

It appears that the family was in Ross Co until about 1824, While in Ross County, Eli Ragon served as a Corporal in the War of 1812 in the 1st Odd Battalion of Ohio under the command of Major Benjamin Daniels. This battalion may have spent time at Fort Feere in Upper Sandusky, Wyandot County, where the family would later move.

From the biography of your Thomas it appears the family then moved first to Shelby County (about 1824) and then to Wyandot County (about 1827). I have quite a bit of information on the family in Wyandot.

Eli and Rebecca stayed in Wyandot until at least 1850. Sometime shortly after that they moved to Warren County, Illinois to live with their son Dr. Bailey Ragon. Eli died on May 8, 1856 and Rebecca on July 31, 1856. They are bried in the Greenbush Graveyard.

Submitter: Vernon Vogt

Subject: Re: Ragons in IL IN and OHIO

Message: I have been trying to trace the descendants of Eli RAGON (1778 - 1856) for over three years now. Eli was born in Maryland, lived for a time in Ross Co., Ohio, moved to Wyandot Co. sometime in the late 1820's. He lived there untill after 1850. Sometime before he died in 1856, he moved to Warren Co., ILL, where his son Bailley, a doctor, lived.

Eli was married to Rebecca Stewart (1784 - 1856) According to the history of Wyandot County, they had nine children. So far I have been able to prove six of them. It is possible that the three I am missing were in Ohio, Indiana, or Illinois.

The six children I have proved are:

1.Thomas (1804-1876) He lived most of his life in Shelby Co., Ohio.
2. John (1807-1890) (my direct line) He lived in Wyandot Co., Ohio
3. Lydia (1809-1842)
4. Bailey ( 1813-1895) Lived in Wyandot Co. Ohio as a young man. Became a Doctor. Lived for a while in Indiana around Vigo Co., Then moved to Warren Co., ILL.
5. Eli Jr. (1821 - aft 1884) Eli Jr. lived in Wyandot Co. as a young man. He moved to Vigo Co., IN, where it appears he lived his entire life.
6. Alfred (1823-1873) Alfred lived his childhood in Wyandot, spent some time in Vigo Co., and moved to Warren Co., ILL with his brother Bailey.

1850 CensusOH, Seneca Co., Seneca. This appears to be Eli and Rebecca living with their grandchildren (Eli and Rebecca, children of Eli Jr. and Anne).
Eli Ragon 73 MD
Rebecca 65 State born hard to read, may be VA
Charles 20 M born OH
Rebecca 15 F Born OH
Note: Since Eli is 73 and Rebecca is 65, Charles and Rebecca Ragon are probably grandchildren

1850 Census, Crane, Wyandot Co.
John 43
Elizabeth 42
William 20
Grenna 16 F
Harrison 13
Mary J 12
Lydia 8
George W 7
Herby 5

Just found the detailed information from the History of Shelby Co., 1883. I will definitely have to visit the County Library in Sidney, OH to find copies of this and similar histories.

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this information.

Franklin Township in Shelby County is where my great-grandmother lived most of her life so there is a good chance she is related to Thomas Ragon in some way. Anna, the small town in which she lived throughout her married life, is near Sidney. I grew up in Logan County, in a small town about 11 miles from Sidney. I wish I had been interested in collecting this information when I was there and my mother and her sister were still alive!

My grandmother, Jessie Mae Butterfield, was the daughter of Rebecca Esther Ragon, daughter of Phillip Y. Ragon and Sarah Ann Lemmon. According to Vernon Vogt (Vgt184@cs.com) who is also a descendent of the Ragons, Phillip is the son of Thomas Ragon born July 1 1804 In VA and Elizabeth young, born June 11, 1809 in Pickaway Co., OH. Thomas is the son of Eli Ragon, born 1778 in Md and Rebecca Stewart, born in 1784. Elizabeth Young was the daugher of Phillip Young, born Oct 16, 1787 in Martinsburg, Berkeley C., VA, (now WV) and Nancy Ann McLane, born abt 1790 in Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., VA. Both died in Franklin Twp., Shelby Co., OH. Phillip Young (Jung)was the son of Charles Young who was born Charles Jung in Germany in 1757. His mother was Catherine Elizabeth Kindt who was born in 1768 in berks co. PA. Her father, Johan Nicholas Kindt, was born in 1730 in Germany.

Below is 1880census information on the family of Phillip and Sarah Ragan (Ragon). Since the census takers didn't always get the spelling of all names correct, is your Mary Etta listed as "May" age 10, or "Emma" age 8. Can you send me Mary Etta's date of birth?

Please email me directly at jwurmser@comcast.net and we can exchange other information. I confirmed that Phillip and Sarah Lemmon Ragon were the parents of my great-grandmother, Rebecca Esther Ragon (listed in the 1880 census as Esther, Leota was really Minnie Leota) through Rebecca Esther's death certificate. I have not been able to find the ancestors of Sarah Ann Lemmon yet. Any other information you have about Phillip or Sarah Ragon would be appreciated.
I do not have a death certificate. I was given the death date from her tombstone by a woman whose family lived on the farm adjacent to the Butterfield (William and Rebecca) family farm for many years.

I hope to travel to Ohio next year and go to the Shelby County offices to search for land titles, death and birth certificates, etc.

I have not been able to find Thomas Ragon in the Ancestry.com census records for the census years between 1820 and 1870. Is it possible for you to send me the names of Thomas Ragon's eight children so that I could search on them. My great-grandmother might be the daughter of one of Thomas Ragon's children.

Ragon to Ragon

First off, my maiden name is Ragon. My great grandfather changed his last name when he was young in America because it was too italian and he was trying to run a business (from Rago to Ragon). Here is my family line that I know....

George Ragon (father)
George Ragon (Grandfather)
Michael Rago (Ragon)
Vincenzo Rago

Vincenzo came from Bari, Italy over to America with his wife who was pregnant. She gave birth between Italy and America to baby Michael.

Sadly, there is only 1 out of 7 of that generation left (my grandfather's generation) and she doesn't know to much. I know Ragons names of brothers and sisters but not neccecssarily beyond that (although i could dig with relatives and find out if need be)... anoyone related?

:)

My husband's grandfather's folks are the Hazel Dell Reunion folks. Have you connected with them? We managed to get to one of the reunions a few summers back, and they have a book of sorts, and the cemetary is just full of Ragons. Including Jonathan, our first born is named after (CIvil War)
I happened in here tonight, never been here before. As a side, can you tell me how I could go about to find something of my maternal grandmother. She just died and when I went to her high school and nursing school that we thought she had attended, they said she withdrew from the HIgh School and the nursing school has no record of her. Am I at the end?
Thanks for your answer (anyone?!)

Are you aware that you can order a death certificate for that year from the Ohio Historical Society for $1.00. The death certificate could be very valuable to you since it asks for information on the parents. It is not a fast service. It will probably take about 2 months to receive it. They have certificates for the years 1908-1944.

Here's how to check this service out:
1) Go to ohiohistory.org
2) click on Archives in the left hand column
3) click on death certifcate index (this will take you to the master index. Unfortunatly they only indexed the years betwwen 1913 and 1937, so you won't find a certificate number for her here.
4) click on "obtain death certificate" in the left hand column. You will be able to read the instructions and print an order form from this page.

Good Luck,
Vern

Jeanne,

In the last couple of months I have made a connection to some of the Ragon's in Shelby Co. Thomas Ragon was a son of Eli Ragon of Wyandot County. Thomas lived in Shelby County and had eight children that I am aware of. He did name one daughter Rebecca J. howerver this daughter was born in 1834 and died in 1854. I have not come accross another Rebecca in the line yet. Most of the names I have are from the census and it is always possible that a nickname could have been used. Was wondering if you have the death certificate for her?

I have been trying to trace the descendants of Eli RAGON (1778 - 1856) for over three years now.

I have further information on all of these individuals and their families. Let me know if any of this sounds like a possible link.
William E. Butterfield was born in Franklin Co. OH in 1863, son of Sylvester Butterfield and Almeda Hall. He married a Rebecca Ragon, born in 1865. They lived for many years on a farm near Anna OH. I am searching for information on her ancestors.

Ragon's in IL IN

My grandmother, Shirley Maxine Ragon, is the daughter of Beuhlah Crandall Ragon and Enos Lowall Ragon. Lowall Ragon was the son of Simon Legrand Ragon and Amanda Knight. Simon Legrand Ragon was the son of Johnathon Ragon (52nd Regiment Ind Vol Inf-Civl War) and Henrietta Ault.

In our family, I believe that RAGON was previously spelled REAGAN. I'm not sure exactly when the change took place. My Ragon ancestors moved from Indiana to IL in the mid-late 1800's. The settled around Hazeldell IL. I have more detailed information if it will help you out. Also, you can visit the website (although it is still very much a work in progress).

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?d...

Thanks !!
Kimberly Clapp

Hello!
No, Rebecca is not a name in our line. However, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a relationship somehow. There were several Ragon families in those parts. Is Anna, OH near the IN border?
Sandy

Our Ragons were in southeastern IN for a few generations. (Before moving over to eastern IL) That's not far from where your relatives were...no doubt there is a connection somehow.
Thanks for the info.

Vernon,
I have traced my husband's line to Joseph Ragon born ca. 1783 in either NJ or Md. (I wish I could the writing on the census! It is so frustrating...I need to search more in both states but haven't been able to do that yet.) He married Harriet Carnes ca 1826. She was born about 1809 perhaps in NJ. He died on 27Sep1857 in Butler Twp, Franklin Co, IN. They had 9 children to the best of my knowledge:
1) Maria born ca 1828 in IN
2&3) Joseph and Josiah (twins) born ca 1831 in IN
4) Henry born ca 1834 in IN.
5) John W. born ca 1836 in IN, He died 3Jan1863 at the battle of Vicksburg...at Young Pt, LA aboard a hospital ship. I have not found out where he is buried but it maybe in Memphis.
6) Jonathan (my husband is descended from him) born 30Oct1841 in Lawrensville, Ripley Co, IN and married 12Oct1865 in Franklin Co, IN. He died 22Mar1923 in Hazel Dell, IL.
7) Ruth born ca 1843. She married Milo Jones on 4May1862
8) Margaret born ca 1849 in IN. She married Jms. Baker on 25 Sep1870 in Franklin Co, IN
9) Mahala (I don't know her birthdate but I suspect IN also)

I suppose that Eli and Joseph could have been brothers..considering the dates. If you find out that we do have a relationship, please e-mail me back and I will do the same for you. Best of luck in your search! And thanks again for your time.
Sandy

Hello, Stephanie!
I'm glad to meet you! Yes, we have been to the reunions, although it's been too long since we've been to see all those nice people. We need to go back again soon. I haven't seen a book. The reunions are lots of fun but never long enough! Which line are you descended from?

My husband comes from Wm. Silas' line. His son was Garrett. His son was Clarence and that is my husband (Ron's) father. We live in California. His father just died this past year. But, Garrett had a "bunch" of kids and we keep in touch with several of them and their families.

Can you write me at my email address and we can talk some more. I would love to get to know you better and to know which line you come from.

I have some ideas on how to find where your Mother went to nursing school. Again, I would like to talk with you regarding the common Ragon lines.
Regards,
Sandy Ragon
SRagon@aceisp.net

Hello Vernon, I'm excited to read your posting of last year. I am descended from Eli Ragon and also John Ragon. John's son Henry H. Ragon is my GG Grandfather. I have a lot of info on him--I have his family Bible. I would like to share info with you.
