Railey - James Born Manchester, Lancashire, England 1801

I am rerearching ancester past of James Railey born Manchester 1801, married Sarah Jane and lived in China Lane (piccadilly area of Manchester) before taking family to Birmingham, England. Name later became recorded as REELEY or REELY. I have the DNA Details (Y) for comparison. I have the family pretty much mapped moving forward, I would just like to fill in the jigsaw for the history pre 1801.

BENJAMIN CHARLESTON RALEY (RAILEY?) DESCENDANTS

Looking for descendants of Benjamin Charleston Raley (Railey) and his wife, Mary L. Benjamin's family is in the 1910 Houston County, Alabama census, but I have not found them in 1920 or 1930, nor have I found any marriage or death information for any of them. In the 1910 census, their children were Clarence W. (b. 1897); Nora B. (b. 1899); Flora G. (b. 1901); Grace F. (b. 1903); Carl (b. 1906); and Marie (b. 1909).

Benjamin's parents were Charles William Raley and Sarah Belle Neely. Charles was a brother of my gggf, Benjamin M. Raley.

If anyone has any leads about what happened to this family, I would appreciate your sharing.

My age and health no longer permit long distance travel and, actually, I have not been aware of the reunion. In any case, you have interested me when you say we are related. I never like to pass up an opportunity to find relatives. Let me know if you're interested in pursuing our kinship. Dale Woosley, Mt. Vernon, IL

This is the last paragraph in the article above.

Collard was postmaster at Kiowa at the time of the shooting. Railey was killed without any justification while trying to act as a peacemaker in a street fight in which Collard had become involved. The defense tried to prove that the shooting of Railey was accidental.

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 22 October 1903, Wapanucak, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

COLLARD GUILTY

Murderer of Gip Railey Gets a Life Sentence

Convicted of Murder in First Degree

Case Was Hard Fought by Counsels – Blood Stained Clothes of Murdered Man Introduced in Evidence – Defense Claimed Accidental Shooting.

Atoka: The jury in the case of Charles Collard, accused of the murder of Gip Railey in a street fight in Kiowa, brought in a verdict of guilty and the defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment. The verdict comes as the close of a long and hard fought case, the counsel engaged being the leading criminal lawyers of the territory.

The presentation of testimony was finished Monday afternoon, and Tuesday was given up to the arguments of the counsel for the defense and the territory. During the speech of J. H. Wilkins, the blood-stained clothes worn by the murdered man were pointed out and the effect was such upon the widow that she fainted and had to be carried from the court room.

Another striking feature of the case was the speech of Henry M. Furman of Ardmore, one of the attorneys for the defense. He is afflicted with rheumatism and his speech was delivered partly as he kneeled before the jury in a manful effort to stand and partly from his chair, when his exertions overcame him and he was obliged to seat himself.

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 11 September 1902 Wapanucak, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

DENIED THEM BAIL

South McAlester, September 6 – Judge W. H. H. Clayton of the Central District today denied the application of Charles L. Collard and Dr. George S. Beatty for admission to bail. The men are charged with the murder of Gyp Railey, a Kiowa traveling man, on Sunday, June 1. The affidavit submitted by the defendants admitted the killing, but claims that the shot was entirely accidental and that the language which was used against them had been designed for another man who they claim had threatened to bring a gun and kill them both. Railey had endeavored a few minutes before his death to stop a free fight between Collard and Beatty and others, Collard was postmaster at Kiowa.

I visited an old lady, a member of the Railey family in New Zealand, she let me copy a letter she had received. It may fill some pieces of your puzzle.
It was from Captain H H Railey, Member of the Byrd expedition to Antarctic. The address was Suit 1508 2 West 45th Street New York.
John Railey was the first member of the family to settle in the USA and developed property on Long Island. One of his decendants Married a miss Randolph, the Aunt of Thomas Jefferson. My Grandfather was Col Charles Randolph Railey a wealthy Planter in Louisiana. He served as a Colonel in the army of Tenesse in the civil war. He was born in New Orleans as was my father William M Railey. I was born there. Colonel Russel Railey (deceased) was a breeder of fine horses in Kentucky And one or two embers of his family still survive at Louisville. Somewhere in my library I posess a booklet on the Railey family and if I can locate it I will be glad to send it to you.I lived in Boston for ten years, but there were no Raileys there.

I don't think she ever got that booklet. Good luck.
Stephanie Railey.

I am a Railey descendant from the Jopseph Henry Railey who settled in Henry County, Alabama. Joseph
married Ellinor McCoy and their children were Ellin, Abigail (my great, grandmother) Henry Joseph, and Sarah Railey. Family history states Joseph Henry perished in the Civil War. Ellinor lived to be darn near 90 years old. My grandfather was Charlie Stevens Railey and my mother was Mary Elizabeth Railey.
Some Railey descendants still live near Henry County
(Dothan and Columbia Alabama). Contact me personally if you have information are need info on this family.
Jan Rolison Farren
Indy
jano@aol.com

Parents of Sarah F. Railey Mock

I am searching for the parents of my gggrandmother Sarah F. Railey Mock. Sarah was born abt. 1828 in Georgia and died after 1860 in Alabama I believe. She is found in the 1850 census with my gggrandfather George Franklin Mock and two of her children, Leroy Lafayette and Sarah A.E. as well as her sister Susan Raily(different spelling) and a 4yo boy. They were living in the 24th District of Dooley Co., Georgia. There were Railys living in the same district, but I am unsure if there is a connection. Does anyone have these women in there family tree or know their parents?

AR Raleighs

My gr-grandmother was Sophronia Jane Raleigh,
b. 4/1/1861, Hempstead Co. AR to John Raleigh
and 2nd wife, Eliza. She m. John Randolph Sellers 12/4/1879 in De Kalb, Bowie Co., TX. They are listed in the 1880 census as living with her father. Their 2nd dtr., Mary Elizabeth (m. Oren Chasteen) and named two of their dtrs., Vera (my mother) and Esther Mae (pronounced Esta Mae.)

I have recently tracked on the net and found John Railey m. Elizabeth Randolph 1748, Albermarle, VA with his father listed as A.M. Railey, no mother. This John b. 1726 Albermarle, VA. d. 10/4/1783. We have a proven Abner Railey b. abt. 1750, d. 1817 in Rockingham, NC, will in Vol. A, pg. 277-278.
His wife, Sarah, will in Vol. B, pg 49-50. There is a son, Vincent, b. abt 1770 in NC as he is in census of 1850, Shelby Co., AL gives his age as 80 and b. NC. In the LDS ped
there names one of the boys m. a girl Vincent. Carl J. Marsh did this research and compiled a book in 1988. He recently had a stroke and loss of speech. I called to tell him about this thread to link somehow
as we couldn't find a Vincent, and the Randolph in Sophronia's husband's name was driving me up the wall when I accidently found the John Railey/Eliz. Randolph. I feel
somehow the Raleighs and Sellers are linked.

She was a little woman with size 5 shoe and John Randolph was well over 6 ft. He was Justice of Peace of De Kalb for 25 yrs., cotton weigher, farmer, Baptist. They are buried in Woodmen's Cemetery in De Kalb.

Shannon, hope you see this after 3 1/2 years. I was interested in your note posted in August, 2000 concerning Morris Railey. I, too, am a Raley without the "i". My gg grandfather was Benjamin M. Raley who was born in Georgia in 1818. We have not been able to determine what the "M" in his name represents, but have reason to believe that it may be "Morrison." I have been searching for any connection between Morris, Morriss, or Morrison and Raley. Do you have any info on Morris Railey's descendants? We could be connected!
