I am a descendant of Ed Rainbow. In the census records of New Kent, VA he can be found in 1810 as Edward Rainbow, in 1820 as Ned Rainbow, and in 1830 again as Edward Rainbow. He was married to Martha Braddenham. I assume that Ed died prior to the 1840 census but have no evidence of that. I was aware of the Buckingham Co., VA Rainbows who are found in the 1880 census. They were possibly Ed's descendants. Edward's daughter, Theodosia, married Shandy Jackson and I am a descendant of this line. I followed census records of the Rainbow name and shortly after 1880, the Rainbow name had disappeared from Buckingham County. I found that Rainbows who had been born in VA had moved to many states including NC, Ohio, and eventually even to California. Family lore has it that Ed was a full-blooded Chickahominy Indian but was listed as Black in the census. Native Americans were treated so badly in VA at the time that many reportedly passed for Black.
