I am curious about the ancient coat of arms for the Devonshire family of Raleigh as one version of it seems to be very similar to the ancient coat of arms for the family of Fleming/Flandrensis Stephen Fleming son of Archibald/Erchenbald/Erchembald (Fleming/Flandrensis) of Devon also had the same but the gules/or checkers at the top and the simple vair at the bottom... it makes me wonder if there is not an ancient family connection between the
first Devonshire Walter Raleigh and the Flemings of Bratton Fleming and Cornwall. The family of Chichester of Devon married into the Raleigh Family of Devon and assumed arms apparently. Where did the earliest ancestor of the Raleigh family (Walter married to Alice) in UK come from? I assume arrived with William Le Conqueror or soon afterwards. A Walter Raleigh? held divers lands in
Ralega, or Raleigli, in the county of Devon. A Walter slain at the Battle of Hastings. I believe there is then mention of a HUGH DE RALEIGH who had three sons:Walter, William, Adam.. perhaps?
Could the Raleighs and the Flemings of Devonshire be kin?
Comments welcome. Is there a Raleigh DNA project?
We have a Fleming and a Fleming Y at ancestry dna so if any
Raleighs have been Y tested they are welcome to join the Flemish Y project just to compare dna. There do not seem to be any at dna ancestry.. perhaps some at Family tree? or other biological Raleighs been tested who could upload their results at Flemish Y Project at dna ancestry.
