Emma Berry Tiffany (1866-1944), Descendent of Sarah Ramer Houseworth

I have been trying to piece together the puzzle of my great-great grandmother's life. Her name was Sallie Emma Berry (called Emma) and she was born on 24 August 1866 in Moorefield, Hardy Co., Virginia (now W. Virginia).

Her parents were James W. Berry (b. abt 1834; Hardy Co, Virginia) and Mary Virginia Houseworth (b. 15 Apr 1834; Hardy Co, Virginia; d. 7 May 1877; Martinsberg, Berkeley Co., W. Virginia).

They were married around 1861 and had 5 children:

Isaac D. (b. 1862)
William Ramer (b. 1864)
Sallie Emma (1866-1944)
John A (1868-1936)
Ward (b. 1874)

In the 1870 Census, Emma Berry is listed with her family and was living in Martinsburg, Co. Berkeley, W. Virgina. However, in the 1880 Census, Emma Berry is listed as living with her aunt and uncle - John and Mary Houseworth. John Houseworth was the brother of Mary Virginia Houseworth Berry, Emma's mother. In this Census, Emma Berry is listed as a daughter of the house.

What I'm trying to find out is what happened to her parents and siblings. I'm thinking that it was a serious illness that wiped out most of the family, but not serious enough to make the papers, as I can't find anything there. Scarlet fever? Measles?

Through cemetary records, I can confirm that Mary Virginia Houseworth Berry died on 7 May 1877. Of their children, I can only trace two of them.

John A. Berry married Emma M. Rofinot (b. 1874) around 1895 and they had one son, Eugene (b. 1896). John Berry died 25 June 1936 in Chicago.

Sallie Emma Berry married Luther Scott Tiffany on 9 July 1889 in Martinsburg, Co. Berkeley, W. Virginia. They immediately departed for Chicago, IL and lived there until their deaths.

James W. Berry (b. 1834) simply vanished. I can find no records of him anywhere. If Sallie Emma was 'adopted' by the Houseworth family, I'm wondering if James W. left to find work, as he would not be able to care for his family himself, given the times. The three remaining children have disappeared also.

Her grandparents were Isaac Houseworth (1807-1886) and Sarah Ramer (1806-1884). Great-grandparents were Frederick Randolph Ramer (1779-1862) and Elizabeth C. Smith (1777-1852).

Emma Berry and Luther Scott Tiffany had 4 children, one of them a son called Ramer Tiffany (1896-1967). My line comes down from their daughter, Ruth ((1894-1968).

I'm very interested in solving the puzzle of this branch of my family. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Sarah Tiffany
RAMER, GEORGE HENRY - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient KOREA WAR *

RAMER, GEORGE H.

Rank and organization: Second Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division (Rein.). Place and date: Korea, 12 September 1951. Entered service at: Lewisburg, Pa. Born: 27 March 1927, Meyersdale, Pa. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as leader of the 3d Platoon in Company I, in action against enemy aggressor forces. Ordered to attack and seize hostile positions atop a hall, vigorously defended by well-entrenched enemy forces delivering massed small-arms mortar, and machine gun fire, 2d Lt. Ramer fearlessly led his men up the steep slopes and although he and the majority of his unit were wounded during the ascent, boldly continued to spearhead the assault. With the terrain becoming more precipitous near the summit and the climb more perilous as the hostile forces added grenades to the devastating hail of fire, he staunchly carried the attack to the top, personally annihilated 1 enemy bunker with grenade and carbine fire and captured the objective with his remaining 8 men. Unable to hold the position against an immediate, overwhelming hostile counterattack, he ordered his group to withdraw and single-handedly fought the enemy to furnish cover for his men and for the evacuation of 3 fatally wounded marines. Severely wounded a second time, 2d Lt. Ramer refused aid when his men returned to help him and, after ordering them to seek shelter, courageously manned his post until the hostile troops overran his position and he fell mortally wounded. His indomitable fighting spirit, inspiring leadership and unselfish concern for others in the face of death, reflect the highest credit upon 2d Lt. Ramer and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Pennsylvania
Cemetery:

Born:

Died:

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_pz/ramer...

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_H._Ramer

Note: This is not my ancestry. How about the Montgomerys? Is "JIM" a shortened form of James? Sincerely, Carolyn Benson

My husband's father was Malachi Ramer, brother of John B. and William Albert. I have John B.'s wife listed as Ella Melissa Katherine Howard and William Albert's wife as Florence Missouri Ellafair Howard. My guess would be that Katherine's son may have been born prior to her marriage to John B., and therefore took her maiden name. I do not find him listed in my records.

I have the original weding album of Nelson Robert Reid and Emily Evelyn Ramer, which I would like to get back to family members. Wedding was in Blessed Sacrament Church, Chicago, on 2 Mar 1946.

Per the album, her parents were Frank Ramer and Anna Salivar Ramer of Chicago. The album contains a 4-generation family tree, list of guests and bridal party and gifts, many snapshots, newspaper clipping, notes on showers and wedding and reception, and information on their two baby boys: Donald Robert Frank Reid and Kenneth Anton Reid.

If you are related to this family, email me at margerice@prodigy.net.
Is anyone researching Peter Hoover Ramer or his family? He's of interest to me primarily because he married one of my grandfather's cousins, Irma Blanche Porteous, 28 Nov 1931. The wedding would have taken place in Prince Albert or possibly Port Perry, Ontario, both of which are located in what was once known as Reach Township, Ontario County, Ontario.

I'd like to know whether they might have had any children, or grandchildren. I'd be interested in learning more about Peter and Irma from any descendants.

Thanks.
--Doug

West Coast Ramers

I've been attempting to research my family's ancestry for months, but all I seem to learn about Ramers is that most of them are in Pennsylvania and Arkansas. My parents and grandparents have always been west coast folk to my knowledge. I'm not sure about my great grandparents. My grandfathers name is George Ramer, and his wife is Joanne Ramer. I know I had a great grandmother named Salisbury(sp?) because I remember going to her funeral as a child. My father is David Wayne Ramer, and mother Nancy Elizabeth Dinges(formerly Ramer until their divorce). My father once visited a second cousin of his in New York when he was there on business. If anyone has any information at all I would love to hear from you. Thank you so much.

Esther Mae Harmon (nee' Ramer) of Mifflin PA

I just found a 1910 census listing my great-grandmother as Ester Mae Harmon, married 2 years. My beloved grandfather Lynne Oliver Ramer never knew that his mother was married. He was born out of wedlock in 1903 and never knew his father. No one in the family knows of this marriage that took place in 1908. She was not living with Mr. Harmon, but with her mother Rachel B. Ramer (nee' Reed). her father Joseph Ramer, who ran a sawmill, died around 1900. I am tyring to find out more about Mr. Harmon.
My grandparents, mother and her brothers are all gone now. But my aunt knows that her father's father lived in Milroy but never acknolwedged his son. My grandfather wrote articles for the Sentinal from 1959-1971 about his childhood in Milroy. He was an engineer, deacon, teacher, and prolific writer. He was raised by his aunt Carrie Bobb after his mother and grandmother died, when he was 9 years old. When I was a girl, he took me twice to visit Milroy and his relatives.

John,

I am working on this same line. All I have is information given to me by family members -- no source material. And not much of that...

John son of Jim RAMER mar. about 1800, wife Elizabeth LAMBERT, father John Alen. Dutch, came to U.S. before Civil War. Jim made shoes for the "Army boys". Elizabeth is on the 1830 Census, McNairy TN Page 133. Town of Ramer, TN is named after them. The siblings of John's I have are: Elizabeth, Rowyork (Roark), Felix, Sam, and John. Elizabeth (daughter) died in 1904, born about 1820. John's wife may have been Mary E., daughter of James MONTGOMERY, orig. from NC, but residing in McNairy or Hardeman Counties early to mid 1800s. He died in one of the counties approx. March 1843. Mary was born in TN circa 1818.

Two other persons are working on this line is at this e-mail, Anna Adams at virtualhorizon@cs.com. and/or June Raimer Poole at JuneRP56@aol.com. At least they were earlier.

I would be happy to share any information with you, as I get it.

Good luck. Bobbie

RAMER RÖMER ROEMER RAYMER Family DNA Project

As a RAMER/RÖMER/RAYMER family researcher for nearly 40 years, I have been very aware of the five major lines carrying these names that were in PA prior to 1750, as well as significant lines in N.C. and KY that are thought to be somehow connected to these lines. To my knowledge no one has yet been able to demonstrate any relationship between any of these lines.

Further, as a researcher focused on the line of Philip RÖMER who immigrated on the ship Friendship of Bristol on 16 Oct 1727, I am unaware of anyone who has convincingly tied any of those lines back to their European sources.
We are anticipating such an effort in Europe starting this year.

Therefore, I am excited to report that we have initiated a DNA study with the intent of determining relationships, if any, between the 7 domestic lines mentioned as well as between any of them and lines in Switzerland and Germany.

We need at least one male direct descendant of each of these lines to partipate. A second participant would be fairly valuable as well.

Additional participants, whether with a proven relationship to any of these lines, or of a line not yet known to be related to any of the above are also welcomed.

Please contact me directly at: JohnRamer@sbcglobal.net for more details.

An immense amount of information could be generated if we all work together.
