Brought in my files today on the Ramsay family. I realize you're not related - I'm not either - just by marriage, but I'm the genealogy nut in the family.
Allan Lawson Ramsay (Sr.) married Ella May Dietche (?) and they had 4 sons: John A. (b. ca. 1909, NJ); William L. (b. ca. 1912, NJ), Robert Douglas (b. 2 Dec. 1913, Perth Amboy, NJ; d. 8 July 1986, St. Thomas, BVI; m. Helen Waite 7 Jan. 1945, Forest Hills, NY) and James N. (b. 21 Apr. 1915, NJ). Allan was the son of Hugh Ramsay and Sarah Jane Lawson who married 6 Oct. 1862, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Hugh died 15 Apr. 1900 in Perth Amboy and Sarah Jane died 31 July 1923 in Morristown, NJ. Hugh was one of the "Shemody Ramsays" because they came from Shemody Creek, on the border of Lots 16 & 17 on PEI. He and his family (including his father-in-law, Cornelius Lawton) migrated to Boston in 1879 (found in 1880 Census) and then to Perth Amboy. He worked by the day as a ship carpenter and later established his shipyard where he build many large barges for the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia and Reading Railroads. He also built a number of steel gunboats for South American countries. He died of apoplexy on his way home from work. This is all from his obituary in the NYTimes. He had 10 children but I only know the names of a few of them. Dr. William Ernest Ramsay was one of them. The line back from Hugh goes: John Ramsay (1790-1873) and Catherine Coy McKay (1793-1862); Malcolm Ramsy (1757-1841) and Margaret Mary Murphy (1759-1839); John Ramsay (1728-1787) and Margaret Taylor. They came from Ugadale, a small village on the east coast of the Kintyre peninsula of Scotland, emigrating from Campbeltown, Argyllshire on the "Annabella" in 1770 to PEI.
I got a lot of my information on the PEI genealogical website and people I met thru it. The Lawson family history is also there as well as in a book I ordered thru interlibrary loan entitled "Stanhope, Sands of Time", a history of Stanhope, PEI. The NY Times also had information on the Ramsays since Hugh was a very prominent shipbuilder. Still have lots more to do on this family.
Contact me if you would like more or if you would like copies of the info I have.
Marianne
