This looked like an interesting story! Hope it helps someone. Not my lines.

Janet

Stockton Daily Independent
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
20-25 JANUARY 1868
***************************************

>>MONDAY, 20 JAN 1868<<

WHERE IS HE – A woman writes from Pautucket, Rhode Island, under date of Dec. 27, 1867, making inquiry respecting her brother, Napoleon Bonaparte RAND, who is supposed to have been in California during the last 12 years. She says: "I am told he is in California somewhere and is a miner. We are orphans – the only children. He is about 34 years of age. We have never seen each other and it is only within a few months I learned that I had a brother. I am very anxious to find him if possible. There was a man by the name of John MAGUIRE along with him, and if I could find Mr. MAGUIRE, I might possibly succeed in finding my brother also." Where is he?

Transcribed by Dee Sardoch
To see more old newspapers, visit www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php

Luther Rand

I really want to more about your Luther Rand. I think he may have been a brother to one of my greatgrandfathers. My own greatgrandfather was Joseph Luther Rand born in Virginia March 16, 1877. I think this was West Virginia since his father was James Henry Rand and was borin Oct 3,1851 in Jackson County West Virginia. They were both burried in KC and that city is in KS and MO. The cementary they were burried in has been owned by MO and KS.
Our family tree has a Luther born in 1818. James Henry Rand's father was a Robert Rand born 1811 in Vermont. He had two wives 1. Mary Snyder born in Penn
one son William -born 1835
Second wife-Mary A Sincler born in Penn. They had a least seven children. My 2nd greatgrandfather was the James Henry Rand I have spoke about in the above paragraph.
We also have more Luthers before this one.
Hope we have the right Luther.
Best Wishes-
Betty Rand Lathrop

"Enslaved" African Americans in RAND records

I am challenging any descendants/relatives of former RAND "slave owners" of North Carolina and Alabama who may have access to family documents containing names of "enslaved" blacks, to extract such names and make them available to African American researchers such as myself.

My great, great grandfather, CLEM (b. Abt 1845, d. 1910), was enslaved on the plantation of Walter R. Rand of Dallas Co, AL. Walter R. Rand (b. Abt 1827, d. 1864) is the son of Nathaniel Green Rand (b. 1796, d. 1883) of Wake Co, NC. Nathaniel, in turn, is the son of Walter Rand (b. 1761, d. 1812) of the Isles of Wight Co, VA; the son of William Rand (b. Abt 1710, d. Abt 1767).

Embedded in said family documents-- transactions, Bill of Sales, inventories, deeds, mortgages, minutes, bibles, journals, diaries etc are possibly names of enslaved African Americans; names of enslaved blacks who were severed from their relations.

This is my goal: To bring together the family ties of my great, great grandfather, CLEM.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

London Rands with a German connection?

Interested in making contact with any other descendants of Adam Ewart, coachmaker and undertaker, born according to 1841 England census 'foreign parts' ca. 1771, died London 1842. He married Theresa Rand at St Marylebone London in 1794.

Children included Joseph Adam Ewart (ca.1797-1866), undertaker, and posibly Henry Ewart (ca. 1807-1850), coachmaker. The latter christened one of his children 'Joachim', which points to German or other continental European ancestry.

I'd be most interested to hear of other London Ewarts who were originally from Europe. Theresa Rand's name could also suggest European origins.

Rand Family (Maine)

I am trying to find any information on my maternal grandparents, Chester Arthur Rand, married Viola Shorette. Chester was born in Eddington or Ellington, Maine. DOD was 3-3-1945. He is buried in Old Town, Maine. His parents were Fred and Annie Rand. From what I can gather so far, Fred was a farmer, Annie a teacher. I believe they also had a daughter named Emily and another son named Clinton. I believe they lived in Penobscot,Maine at one time. I have not other information other than this. Does anyone out there know anything about my family? I would love any information you have. Thank you

Ok, well this is a shot in the dark... but I am trying to find some information regarding LUCY RAND BILLINGS - DUPEE is simply because she was the mistress of a DAVID JOSEPH DUPEE according to some information and then I have some other that says they were married 31 Oct 1863 in Champlain, New York, USA
They had children together - Pely b. 1873 and Lewis b.1871

The only information I have is that her mother was from Africa , her father was from Virginia - LUCY is listed as Mulatto in the cenus's. She was born about 1845 in New York, she died about 1910 I believe in New York as well.

I would love any information that anyone here can give me.

Does anyone have information of a George C. Rand who married Rachael Craig abt. 1873? They appear on 1880 Census in Dakota Territory as maaried. He is from NH and she is from Canada. I have no idea where they met or were married.

I believe he is the same George C. Rand who married Arianna (many spellings exist)Elliot in Portsmouth, NH in 1869. They had a child, Harvey Clinton Rand in 1869. She is listed remarried (Charles Poor)in Fremont, NH on 1880 Census w/ Harvey listed as stepson.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Peter Hill

A Challenge to Rand Researchers !!!

Hi All,

I have been researching my family for the last 10 years but my Rand line has been so difficult to crack that I am asking for help from you all.

I have traced my Rand's to the parishes of Ilford and West Ham in Essex,  near to London. So far I have found;
John Rand born about 1790 who was married to Jane, their daughter Rebecca Rand was born 21 Jul 1810 at Little Ilford and christened at All Saints West Ham, who married Joseph Deller/Dellow on 9 Aug 1830 at St Dunstan's. Rebecca lived in Forest Gate/West Ham all her life and died in 1889 in West Ham.

I have a complete listing of Rebecca's children.

I have found no other record of Rebecca's parents John and Jane and so am stuck.

Rebecca may have had a brother Joseph who was born in 1818 as she was a witness at his marriage to Mary Wood.

So is there anyone out there with information that could help me out? If so please email.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

Rand Family

I am very interested in buying a copy of that book since it is my family history. My great grandfather was Joseph Luther Rand and wife- Daisy McClung Rand.

Relatives tell me they are in the book. His father is James Henry Rand - KS City,KS and also West Virginia. His father was Robert and Mary Anne Rand- West Virginia and VT.

I have Rand family history that cousins sent me from Canada and Cal and New York. This is from 1177 to almost present. It is mainly Rand history. I can email or sent hard copy if this would help you. It is not complete due to the length etc.

I found grandpaarets down to Robert Rand with son -Kinsey. My 2x great grandfather was Kinseys brother James Henry. So you see even I had to go to census records and family Bibles to get most of data.

I will be glad to send if you think this will help. You probably have more than I do. Let me know.
Sincerely-
Betty Anne Rand Lathrop

Hi,
I'm looking for some info on my great grandaunt. Her name is Annie Rand (nee Hertach). She was born 17 Feb 1881 in Massachusetts, and died in Jan of 1983, just missing her 102nd birthday. What I guess I need is the first name of her husband. I know she married into the Rand family, as did her brother John.
Her brother (at least the one that I know of) is John Jacob Samuel Hertach a.k.a. Jake b. 24 Jun 1879 in Charlestown, MA. He died in 1955 in Arlington, MA.
Both "Jake" and Annie were the children of Samuel & Christina (Spindler) Hertach. Samuel b. 24 Jan 1842 in Niederurnen, Glarus, Switzerland, Christina b. 23 Sep 1848 (I think)in Wuerttemburg, Germany.

the info on Annie's husband, and his relatives is what I'm searching for. If anyone has this info, I'd love to hear from you. I will be willing to share what I have.
Thankyou

Francis and his wife Christian emigarted from England to NH, bef 1645, when their son John was born at Sandy Beach, NH. Does anyone know the names of his parents or Christian's maiden name? Does anyone know where in England they came from? I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks. Maggie

Sally Rand - Fan Dancer of the 1930's

Thurkel (Turk) Greenough Red Lodge, Montana cowboy 1930's

My father gave me a 1931 scrapbook that has newspaper clippings of the time concerning cowboys and the rodeos. This article was in the scrapbook with a picture of Turk Greenough age 36 who wanted to marry Sally Rand a Fan Dancer.

Sally's, Hubby-to-be Already Has a Wife

Los Angeles(UP) Mrs. Helen Greenough said Friday the handsome cowboy to whom Fan Dancer Sally Rand is engaged is her husband.

She said she married Thurkel (Turk) Greenough in Red Lodge, Mont., on April 5, 1933, and lived with him until last June. He is a prfessional bronc rider.

Mrs. Greenough, pretty and frail, consulted Attorney Lewis A. Schaffer.

"How can he marry that fan dancer if he's married to me?" she asked. "Turk and I were married in Red Lodge, and I went with him everywhere. We use to come out here so Turk could ride in the movies."

She said she had received two letters from him, from Montana. One informed her he was 'in love with someone else." She said he told her they could not be happy because she disliked living on a ranch.

Miss Rand announced from Kentucky Wednesday she intended to marry Greenough and "live on his ranch." She added, however, she would continue her fan and bubble dancing.

Mrs. Greenough said the dancer met her husband in 1935 at a rodeo in Cheyenne, Wyo.

"Turk, won the prize, and afterward she came running up to him to get his autograph," she told her attorney. "It's just the glamour of the rodeo business that gets 'em. These society women just get attracted to cowboys.

Mrs. Greenough indicated she would be willing to give her husband a divorce if he would make financial provisions for her.
CAUTION: Some Rand lineages may be fraudulent

In reviewing the older postings to this board, I have noted a few references to work by Anjou on descent from Robert Rand of Charlestown, MA.

Early in the 1900s, about 200 fabricated genealogies were produced by Gustav Anjou, a Staten Island, NY, genealogist. More than 100 of these genealogies have been located. They are widely accessible and probably being used by genealogists, who may not be aware that the pedigrees are false.

For more details, please refer to the following websites:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~tmark/GeneFraudsArt...
http://www.horsethief.info/anjou.htm

If anyone can help identify the specific questionable publication, it would probably be helpful to all of us. If possible, please identify the work by its full title, as well as where you saw it. If it's on-line, the URL would be helpful.

It is not my intention to criticize the work of anyone who has chosen to rely on work by Anjou. I am only suggesting that the prudent genealogist should look for additional supporting documentary evidence rather than relying solely on a source that may be questionable.

Wilson DeCamp
Message Board Administrator

Samuel Rand, residing Epsom, NH, 1799>Strafford, Orange, VT

Seeking ancestry or any information on Samuel Rand, b. ca 1770-80. He and wife, Alice [Unknown] are living in Epsom, NH, in 1799 at the birth of son, Moses.
This family migrates to Strafford, Orange Co., VT, by 1801.
Known children:
Moses, b. 1799, Epsom, NH
True, b. 1801, Strafford, VT
Emily, b. 1805, Strafford, VT
Alpha Buck, b. 1810, Strafford, VT

Moses, True and Emily Rand [Worthington] all migrate to Walworth Co., WI, in 1841. We do not believe Samuel and his wife accompanied them - there is no record of them in WI.

Any assistance or direction appreciated in helping us find the ancestry of this Samuel Rand.

Nancy Watrous

Rand-Wilson marriage, Ohio

A diary entry by my gggf, Robert L. Wilson of Whiteside Co., IL, for June 3, 1865, mentions a visit to Oxford, OH, where he "stopped at Mr. Higgins who married my niece Sarah Rand".

In addition to the implication of a Higgins-Rand marriage, this also suggests a Rand marriage to a Wilson daughter, probably in or near Perry Co., OH. The only daughter in the family for whom I have no record of a marriage is Sara, b. bef. 1822. Any marriage probably took place after 1822, since Sara is specifically named in her father's will of that date, suggesting she was of legal age then and unmarried, since the will does not state a married name.

Does anyone on this list have additional information about any Higgins-Rand or Rand-Wilson families?

Wilson DeCamp
Leesburg, VA

I found a picture of David Michael Rand taken in 1943 and it says that he is 2 years and 2 months.
He is the son of Dave and Winnie Rand who were friends of my parents, and possibly could have been related on my mother's side(Phillips or Rouse).
I would like to find David or his family and send the picture to them and a couple of letters I have.

Wilda Shelly MandMWilda@aol.com

My father had among his old items a wooden box containing a small school microscope. The outside of the box has woodburning. The top says " Property of: J. P. Rand, 1935." The front repeats the "J. P. Rand." The bottom has "Joseph Rand."
The box and the microscope are still in excellent condition. I would like to return it to its rightfull family. Can you identify this person? I'd love to know more about him.
e-mail me at sammag@cox-internet.com

Vermont & New Hampshire Rands

If this is your first visit to the Rand Board, welcome. I am one of its administrators. If you have general questions, I will attempt to answer them. However, like most persons you meet here, I have my speciality. Mine is a database of about 2400 persons who were Rands or were married to Rands and who lived in Vermont or New Hampshire sometime before 1860. Beyond 1860 I have very little. Contact me with a name and a [approximate] birth date if you think I can be of help.
N.B. When posting a message try to include a name that is relevant to the Rand family and indicate what state or area that name is connected with. Finally if you have the person's years, give that also. Two examples: (1) VT--Philander Rand (1807-72), or (2) NH--Susanna Hemenway Rand (1746-??) Be concise and creative, as if you were trying to sell a car through an ad in the newspaper!

I'm looking for information about a woman named Lillian Rand. I believe she lived in New York -- probably late 1800s or early 1900s -- and she was apparently a well-known harpist.

Gilpatrick/Rand in Oxford Co., Maine, USA

Stephen B Gilpatrick (b 1815) married (intention published)Thankful RAND on April 10, 1835. Their children: Ruth b 1836, Cyrus b 1838, Stillman b 1846, Charity b 1848, Thankful b 1849, Melvin b 1852.
Stephen B Gilpatrick was born in Oxford Co. Maine. I have no information on Thankful RAND. I did find a RAND couple in the 1860 census, Pisquataquis Co., Maine - Barzallai (age 68 est dob 1792) & Thankful (age 70 est dob 1790). He was a veteran of the War of 1812.
Do any of these RANDS from Maine sound familiar? With the name Thankful repeating in these 2 RAND families I tought there might be a connection.
Thank You,
Jane

Dot: A Sarah M. Rand died in 1871 and is buried in the Hillside Cemetery in North Adams, Ma., possisbly the wife of E. A. Rand, in a plot owned by E. A. Rand. This from Cemetery Records of the Town of North Adams Page 363. Edward A. Rand Died 9-27-1909 and buried in #252. We believe he is the brother of Clark Rand born April 1816 in Paris, Me.(our gggrandfather). Also there is another Sarah L Rand died 3-23-1909 buried in Lot #253 deeded to E. A. Rand. This could have been Edward A. Rand's wife. We are trying to find information about the father of Clark Rand, David Rand supposedly born in 1778. If we come up with additional information I'll let you know. Bernice

Go to your local public library and tell them you want to borrow a book through Interlibrary Loan: A GENEALOGY OF THE RAND FAMILY IN THE U.S., comp. by Florence Osgood Rand. Tell them that you are willing to look at a microfilmed copy of the book and that the Sutro Library, a branch of the California State Library, has a microfilm copy. They should carry the ball and be able to get the book for you. If not, go to your local Family History Center (Mormon) and see if the book is on microfilm in their Salt Lake City library.

I have a Charles Rand married to Angelia Shumway November 06, 1847 in Pownal VT. According to the LDS site it is stated that Charles was born in Hadley MA November 02, 1818.
According to the 1850 Adams MA census it is stated that he was from Maine. And it looks that this was his second marriage. He may be the son of David Rand and Rachel Townsend from Woodstock Maine. I am looking for the correct information regarding his birthplace.

The Rand family of E. Boston and Somerville, Massachusetts

Hi, l'd like to hear from anybody who knows about the Rand family of E. Boston and /or Somerville, Massachusetts. The only person I know who to start with is my great grandmother, Agnes. She was born in E.Boston, later married a man named John Hertach from Cambridge, and later settled in Somerville. All I know is that Agnes' parents both hail from Massachusetts, (assuming in the Boston area), but beyond that, I don't know. I don't even know of their names. I don't have access to the census records, so I can't check. Agnes was born around 1884. She was the mother of 6 children, (only 5 will show up on the 1920 census, if it is checked, seeing as the youngest child, my grandmother, wasn't born till 1921). Their names were: Ralph, John Herbert, Louise, Dorothy, Helen, and finally (if you search the 1930 census)Lillian. If anyone knows of this family please respond. All efforts and time are appreciated.
Thankyou,
V.Miller
