Hi Theresa! My grandmother had an older brother named Clifford Ranger. She was born in Capreol Ontario in 1924. Clifford's mother was Ila Ross and his grandmother was Agnes Richway. It is my understanding that Agnes Richway was native. If you think this is your grandfather I will dig up some more information for you.

My grandfather was Joseph Aldege Ranger. He was born in 1885 in Quebec, Canada. His father was Alexandre Ranger and his mother was Vitalini Lavigne which were both born in Quebec, Canada. Joseph had sisters, Lavina, Blandina, and brothers Alexander, Adalard, Zotique, Clovida, Antonia, and Phelias. Most of them came to the United States. Joseph married Martha E. Manley around 1915 and divorced her in 1924. He married a Ruth Ferrel in 1926. I believed they had a daughter, but I am not sure. He died in 1938 from a self inflicted gunshot to the head. If anyone has any information on him or his family, I would greatly appreciate you sharing it with me.

Although I do not have any information to offer concerning your Robert Ranger, I can tell you that every Ranger I have found in Oz before 1870 originated in the south of England. The majority came from Sussex, Surrey and Kent. The Ranger name is very rare in South Africa before the Boer Wars, and most of them originated in England as well. In order to determine if a Ranger ancestor from South Africa was English or Dutch, you would need to know the area of South Africa in which they lived. During the Victorian era, British enclaves were rather distinct from the Afrikaaners. Good luck with your search.

Robert Young
Ranger One-Name Study
www.one-name.org

Re: Early Rangers from where? France/Holland etc.

There have been significant family groups for Ranger (and other spelling variants) in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland, as well as the UK. I have been studying the Ranger surname for many years now, and so far there has been no conclusive proof that the French Ranger's, Germanic Ranger's and the English Ranger's have any common thread. There are certainly instances such as the one you mentioned concerning nurserymen in Kent early on as well as in the Netherlands. There are also instances of Ranger's of British descent and Ranger's of French descent being loacted in the same counties in the United States post 1800. Again, there has been no definitive evidence that there were any connections between the families.

If you or anyone else has such evidence, I'd be very interested to hear from you.

Robert Young
Ranger One Name Study (2940)
http://www.one-name.org

My great-great-grandfather was Charles S. Ranger married to Elizabeth May. He was born in MA 14 Nov, 1840 and died in Clearfield County, PA 09 Dec, 1909. I don't know if this is the same person you were talking asking about, but it appears similar. I have the children listed as:Ida Mae(1872), Minnie (1875), and James (1878).

Next line children from this William & Sarah, Richard Harding Ranger b1801-1870 m 1825 Elizabeth Miles 1802-1866 who have a daughter Mary b 1838. No other information. Next child of said William & Sarah D
daug Mary b 1804, and a Mariah b 1806 (these could be the same person suspect one might have died and another took her place as they sometimes did, but have no proof of this as yet) William Ranger 1809-1899 m 1827 Christian White 1809-1892 (this couple are the parents of your Sarah and my line)a daug Sarah b 1812 no other details, son John b 1814 again no details and Edward b 1815 no other details. That's the information I have of this family. How much info have you on our line? I have majority of births marriages etc., of William & Christians children, perhaps you have more info, would be pleased to hear from you even if you think I have any of the above wrong. I'm hoping to go to Chippenham's new record office shortly (I expect you know it has moved from Trowbridge and a purpose built office is now at Chippingham. It is quite a journey for me so will go and probably stay over night. So I am hoping to find more from this visit. I assume you are in Uk and know what I am talking about. Hope you can understand all the above. Sincerely Mary

Hi Laura, Thanks for your email and glad you obtained the marriage cert for Sarah and James. I know we are not the direct line at the moment, but I have managed to get back to William and Christian's grandparents if you are interested. Not a great deal of info on them but at least I have William's siblings. My direct line is Richard and Jane Ranger (Richard and your Sarah would be brother and sister) if you get me. Anyway let me know. Sincerely Mary,.

Hi, sorry for the delay in replying. Have you the marriage certificate for Sarah Ranger b 1845? to Lambourne? I may have the wrong line, but my search revealed that a James Lambourne married Sarah Ranger September 1866 Alderbury, Wiltshire. On 1871 census living at Victoria Road Portslade, with 2 daughters, born Siddleshaw Sussex. Sarah born Hindon, James b 1841 Redlynch Wiltshire. Have not searched any further. Let me know if this is of any help. Cheers, Mary.

His father was Robert Ranger. Family stories say he may be from South Africa or Holland?? Also he may have jumped ship in Australia.

I'd be grateful for any leads.

Early Rangers from where? France/Holland etc.

We've always thought that the Ranger surname was French but it has been suggested to me by someone who has lots of Ranger knowledge, that our branch of it could even have come from Holland (Renger etc).

As I'm not very good at doing continenetal european genealogy (I'm ok with british records as I'm here already and have done a reasonable amount on the Surrey Rangers and am constantly tripping over the west country ones where I live), I wonder if there is anyone out there who has done any substantial research into the french Rangers and /or the dutch Rengers that they wouldn't mind sharing with me so that I can see if it relates to the suggestion that was kindly given to me.

This expert also suggested that our Surrey family might go back to the mid to late 1500s in Dover but did they come over as Walloons or as part of the hanseatic league trade? A number of them who settled in Kent and that area of southeast England seemed to have been nurserymen and even for quite a large number of generations - some Rangers in Effingham were nurserymen even in the 1800s - so is that evidence for Holland?

All very vague I know, but maybe there is someone out there who has some experience of searching dutch & french records. Thank you.

Re: William Ranger b. 1790, Surrey ENG

Having read this other message of yours now, I think that you are of the same family. There seems to be a possibility that your James Ranger was the brother of the Thomas Ranger who married Sarah West that I mentioned.

However, there is a previous generation with the Dyer connection and the Wests as the father of Sarah West (James, just to confuse things) seems to have married Mary Dyer first. His second wife was a lady by the name of Jane and she was the mother of Sarah West who married Thomas Ranger.

But ... Thomas' possible brother James Ranger married Charlotte Dyer as you have mentioned. Charlotte had a sister by the curious name of Fruiswith (or something like that - maybe even Fruisanna?) and she married a Robert Tyrrell. Their daughter Susannah married Thomas Ranger who was the son of the Thomas Ranger who might have been a brohter to James. Are you still with me?!!!

Therefore Susannah married the son of her aunt Charlotte's brother-in-law. I think that's how it works out! On my tree chart it was really difficult to draw - a bit like a circle with bits duplicated and asterisks in places! Tricky.

By the way, the parents of our Thomas Ranger (who married Sarah West) were Daniel Ranger & Elizabeth Woodgar and before that, James Ranger (all of the Surrey/Kent area)
