My last name is Niles. My father and grandfather were both Clarence Niles. My great grandfather I think was George Niles. I dont know much about that side of my family either because my great grandfather died before my grandfather was born. But my great grandmother was Marie Cooper. I was told that they met while they were attending school in Florida. Marie's family is from GA though.
Maybe we can help each other

Hi--I think it was Thomas Rankin's grandfather, David Rankin, Sr. (1695-1768 and son of William Rankin)who emigrated from Londonderry, Ire.
He married Mildred Janette McCormick (b.1690 Balintoy, Antrim, Ire) in 1718 at Raphanot (sp),Ire. Her brother was the first doctor in the Frederick, VA area and a graduate of the Univ of Dublin. David Rankin, Jr., was born in Ireland or Pa in 1722 0r maybe 1726 and died 1795 in Harrison Co, KY. His Will nis at 1795 Harrison Co Will Book p13. He was married to Hannah Province. He apparently received 630 acres from Lord Fairfax.

I am pretty certain that this Thomas Rankin died in Harrison County, Ky, not Ohio, on March 4, 1820. He was married to Hannah Jane Montgomery of Washington, PA. Do you also have his father as David Rankin (1726-1795) who also died in Harrison Co., KY?

I'm researching Rankine ancestors, and I've got a Wm J Rankine married to Margaret Cockburn on 3-Aug-1866 in Eyemouth. The marriage extract lists Margaret's age as 22, daughter of John Cockburn (grocer) and Barbara Hardie, David Cockburn & James Tait as witnesses. Wm J Rankine (baker), age 21, son of James Rankine (baker) and Jessie Eyre. Does anyone know anything about these Rankine's?
I have a record of a Laura Ann Rankin born 1847 in Greene Co., TN, daughter of James Dinwiddie Rankin. She married John P. Cowan in 1871 in Jefferson Co., Tenn. John was born 1840 in Jefferson Co., Tenn. and died in 1902. According to the information I have they had two children, Maggie born and died 1876 and John J. born in 1877. I have no records of John P. Cowan's parents. I do not have any records for John Henry Cowan and Lydia "Lillie" Solomon, Elmer Ershel or Nora Bell.

I am looking for information on my Mom's Father's side of the family. He died when Mom was very young so we don't know much.

John Henry Cowan (1878-1934) was married to
Lydia Solomon (1876-1916) They had two children
Elmer Ershel Cowen (1905-1953) and
Nora bell Cowen (1909-2006)

Elmer Ershel Cowen (1905-1953) had seven childrem Donald Kenneth Cowen (-)
Haskel Jean Cowen (-)
Syble Jean Cowen (-)
Mary Loreen Cowen (1935-)
Bobby Jean Cowen (1937-)
Shirley Ann Cowen (1941-)
Nora Ruth Cowen (1944-)

I found a John Cowen on a census that I thought was the right place at the right time. It listed

John P. Cowan (1840-1902) and
Laura Ann Rankin (1847-) as being his parents.
More research has shown me that they had a son named
John P Cowan (1887-)
So I am afraid that I read the census wrong. Can anyone tell me if I am right or wrong?

Bob, My name is Travis and I live in Ocean County, New Jersey. I think I am familiar with the cemetery you wrote to Shirley about. I may have visited that same cemetery many years ago, and I took photographs of several grave headstones.

My mother's name is LaVera, and her people were from Magee, Mendenhall, Sandersville, and Laurel, Mississippi. My grandmother's birthname was Magdalene "Edmonson" and she grew up in Magee. Her mother was Harriet Rankin. At one time, Harriet was married to "Doc Carter", and they had several children: John, Will, Bernice, Arter, and George Washington Carter, to name a few. Harriet's parents may have been named Jeff and Nancy; she had several brothers and sisters. Many Rankin people appeared to be of mixed race heritage, based on a few photographs I have seen. I know of several family names such as Jim Rankin, John Rankin, Jeff Rankin, Nancy Rankin. Other family names that are linked to Rankin through marriage include Hughes, Grantham, Thames, and Carter. During the early 1930's some members of these families migrated from Mississippi north to places like St. Louis, Chicago, and Detroit. I hope this information is helpful, and I hope to hear from you and others soon.
Thanks for the locations. The family probably moved from central Pennsylvania where there were a number of early settlers by the name of Rankin. Do you have any information or name of an earlier generation?

Do you know where in Pennsylvania Ida Rankin may have come from? Do you have any idea of who her father was or other members of her family? There are lots of Rankins in Pennsylvania that I have information about, but I didn't find an Ida Rankin that married a Ross Smith.

I am looking for information on my great-great grandfather Robert Rankin, born 4-17-1800 in Cynthiana, Harrison County, Kentucky. He died at age 81 in Carroll County Missouri. He first was married to Matilda Redman and had one son, Thomas. His second wife was Elizabeth Veach (or Veatch). They had nine children. When she died in 1851 he moved to Missouri and at some point married again to Elizabeth J ?. I have information on ancestry of first two wives, but nothing on him. Per census records, his father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Ireland. Any information is greatly appreciated and I will share anything I have about his descendants.
jgehrman

This info is probably old to you by now but thought I would send it anyway. John Robert Kirk Rankin was my great-grandfather. I show his birthdate as December 6, 1857 and his death date as November 29, 1939. He married Ida Mae Lilley November 1, 1886 in Jasper County, Iowa. She was born April 1, 1867 in Warren County, Iowa. She died November 19, 1948 in Jasper County, Iowa. Both are buried at Bethel Cemetery in Jasper County, Iowa. He was 1/2 German with some Welsh and Scottish heritage. They had 4 sons. (Carl Anderson, Charley Arthur, Daniel Thomas and John Raymond)
