Maj. Frederick J. Ransbottom, of Oklahoma City, Okla. Vietnam MIA Identified

On the Web:
http://www.defenselink.mil/Releases/Release.aspx?ReleaseID=1...

December 22, 2006
Soldiers Missing in Action from Vietnam War are Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of two U.S. servicemen, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are Maj. Frederick J. Ransbottom, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and . . . both U.S. Army. Ransbottom will be buried in Edmond, Okla. on Jan. 13, . . .

(see link for complete release)

Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men to explain the recovery and identification process, and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

On May 12, 1968, North Vietnamese forces overran the Kham Duc Special Forces camp and its surrounding observation posts in Quang Nam-Da Nang Province (formerly Quang Tin Province), South Vietnam. Ransbottom and Skivington were two of the 17 U.S. servicemen unaccounted-for after the survivors evacuated the camp. Search and recovery efforts at the site in 1970 succeeded in recovering remains of five of the 17 men. A sixth man was returned alive during Operation Homecoming in 1973 after having been captured and held prisoner of war by the North Vietnamese.

Between 1993 and 2006, joint U.S./Socialist Republic of Vietnam teams, led by the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC), conducted eight investigations and four excavations in the vicinity of the camp site. The team interviewed former North Vietnamese officers and soldiers who participated in the battle. Some recalled seeing the bodies of U.S. servicemen near one of the observation posts, and U.S. eyewitness accounts placed Ransbottom and Skivington near the post.

During an excavation conducted in 1998, two U.S. servicemen who survived the battle accompanied JPAC to help locate the observation posts, but found no evidence of human remains. Later excavations conducted in the area yielded human remains, identification media and personal effects for Ransbottom, Skivington and several other soldiers.

Among other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC also used dental comparisons in the identification of the remains.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO Web site at www.dtic.mil/dpmo or call (703) 699-1169.

Allison and Margaret had a daughter Margaret E. Ransbottom who, according to the census, was born about 1852. Looking at the 1880 census, there is a Jonathan and Margaret Ingram in Walkers Creek, Rockbridge Co., VA. I think that this is consistent. They are listed as having two children - a daughter who is 6 and a son who is 3. The daughter is probably the one that I found a reference to in a book on Rockbridge Co. Births as having been born to Margaret E. Ransbottom with no father listed and reported by Mrs. Croan, the child's grandmother.

Many of John Ransbottom's children (as well as John and his wife Mary) are buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Colombus, Ohio. I happened upon it while looking for information about John's father Allison.
I did not find anything new about Allison. I was hopeing to find a cemetery record. The one bit of information that I found a couple of years ago that I have not seen mentioned is that he died in August 1856 in Augusta Co., VA (Augusta Co., VA Deaths 1853 - 1896). His daughter Elizabeth who married James W. Glass is one of my Great Great Great Grandmothers on my mothers side.

At the top of my road is an historical cemtary. My children and I are going to clean it up. Upon doing so we were reading headstones. There are Ransbottoms, James who was a child when he died and also lillie B. she was also a child. the parents were John H. and Amy A. Amy's maiden name was remington. the dates of the childrens deaths were not clear. the headstones were worn. Do you have any information on this family. Are you related? We are in RI.

George Ransbottom

Diane;

Sorry about the proevious message.

After looking a little closer, it is pretty obvious that your George Ransbottom must be my George Ramsbottom. When I first put George Ramsbottom into your web site search engine, he didn't turn up. But after a little more looking....

First, your George Ransbottom was the son of Thomas Ramsbottom. That would probably mean that George was born a Ramsbottom and changed his name to Ransbottom along the line and thus the reason my G Grandfather John spelled his name Ransbottom.

My George was born in 1835 and so was your's.

My George lived in Lawrence, Co. OH and so did the children of your's.

My Grandmother Hazel Ransbottom was married in Indiana in 1910 in Jasper County (We wondered how / why she got from OH to Inidana?)next to Starke County where your George died in 1907.

Too many co-incidences for me to believe there is not a connection here. How solid and complete is your information? What is your source? Mine is from the Ransbottom Book at the public Library in Lawrence County, OH.

Another (a long shot) co-incidence, in your Gen 4, you have a William Riley Ransbottom. My John I. Ransbottom son of George was married to a Martha Riley. Also, Hazel's sister may have been raised by a family named Riley or some similar spelling.

I've got the feeling that George was married for a third time (your MaryLoueza)to Nina Adams sometime between 1857 and 1863. From this marriage was atleast one son, my John!

Your thoughts and advice please.

Larry Burke
CA

Curtis;

I am more than happy to share my information with you. However, I think you would be making a big mistake if you didn't confirm that your Clarence and mine are the same. A brother or sisters name, a death cirtificate, an obituary or something to tie us together. FYI Coldwater, OH doesn't appear in any of my data. Wishon is a new one too.

If you will look into Diane Silver-Long's website on the Ram(n)sbottom Family at www.mismagicshouse.com/genealogy499x/ransbottom.htm you will find an excellent source of all the Ram(n)sbottom family all the way back to the 1600's. Diane has done an excellent job. If you can't get inwith this address, just follow her and my conversations in the Ransbottom Surname Message Board. She has been very helpful.

How would you like my info? I can send you an electronic file if you are using any type of a genealogy program. Or... I will be more than happy to print you out a book if you would rather have a hard copy.

But, again, I would advise you to link us first!!
Everett;

Saw your reply to your niece Regina on the Family History message board about your brother Joseph. I am descended from John and Mary Joseph Ransbottom from the WV, OH, KY area. Their children were; Ida, Bertha, Clarence b. 1886, Mabel b. 1890 and Hazel b. 1891 I believe. Later, Mary must have died and John married again to a Marth Riley. They had a couple more son's; John Jr. b. 1901 and Clifford b. 1904. Understand that John Sr. was possibly killed in a car accident in WV in the 1920's.

Do these names ring a bell, or do you know anyone else that may know of these family members? My grandmother, Hazel has been gone for over 30 years and I would really like to "know" some Ransbottom family. My family lore said there was Indian blood and Hazel looked more like an Indian than Sitting Bull.

Thanks in advance for for taking the time to reply.

Larry Burke
CA

Rausbottom on Aug. 17 1876 in Rockbridge Co. VA.. List her as being 24yr at the time of marriage and from Augusta Co. Lists her parents as A. Rausbottom and M. Rausbottom from Augusta Co. VA. J.C. Myers officiating. Do u think this M.Rausbottom that Jonathan married was a daughter of your Allison Ransbottom and Margaret Hemp.. Would be interested in your thoughts.
Hi Katherine, I have seen in several queries where people have said Thomas Ransbottom (my line) was born in England but I could never find any proof of this if someone could help me with this I would be grateful.

Walter, Lee and Claude Ransbottom was a half brother to my great grandfather Abraham Lincoln Ransbottom and their father was George. I know Walter went to Michigan but lost track of him after that. Knew that Lee went to Florida and raised vegetables and trucked them back to Indiana.

Just went on line so new to this end of the genealogy but have been working on my ransbottom genealogy since 1969. George Ransbottom was my 2nd great grandfather and I hate to say this but I think you guys have 2 george ransbottoms mixed up, mine is the one in Ohio around Allen and the neighboring counties, was in the civil war and ended up in Indiana where he died but you have his wife and kids wrong. He was married 1st to Mary King then to Loueza. His son Abraham was my great grandfather. I don't even know if this will go through but if it does my E-mail is gingerspice@kconline.com if you need anymore info.
