The fraudulent Coligny-Rapalje descent

Apparently, a particular fabrication of the ancestry of Joris Jansen Rapalje (of Valenciennes, later Brooklyn, New York) has been perpetuated. Here's the URL to the PDF file (viewable in Adobe Acrobat Reader):

www.genlit.org/agr/include/getdoc.php?id=37&article=10&a...

The author makes a strong case. The -father- of so-called "Gaspard Colet de Rapalje" actually said his son Gaspard died at the age of 14-15.

Here are a couple of websites which perpetuate the notion:
- http://nortvoods.net/rapleeeurope.html
note: this website references a book which references the fabricated genealogical book... however, there is still some useful information on the site (and cute sketches of the family coat of arms).

Nice thing is, the second website also disputes some proposed lineage connections:

This is a friendly reminder to always *check sources* and their dates! =)

Hi..I am a direct descendant of the DeRapalje family from 1604 and before. Try checking out Catalyne Tricaud and her husband Joris deRapelje. They were married in Holland in the 1620's before coming to New Amsterdam. (NY) If you do an internet search, you should see info on them since their daughter was the first European white settler born on Long Island. (Brooklyn)

I don't have much to offer, but I am interested in the parents and children of George Rapalje and Elizabeth Vandervoort. I know they were married on 04 Oct 1746 at the Flatbush Dutch Reformed Church. Her parents are thought to have been Jan/John Vandervoort and Magdalena Huysman, but I have not been able to confirm that.

Do you have information on his parents or their children?

Thanks.

Mike Morrissey

Martha, Anne or Ann Rapalje, sister of your George and
dau of Garret and Helena, married (as his second wife) my
5th great grandfather, Jacob Wilkins, I believe in NYC
sometime in the 1790s, but I am having a hard time getting
firm data (although I have plenty on her father and back).
Jacob died in 1809, and Anne seems to have married a Charles
Smyth or Smith in 1810. There are references in the news-
papers to estate matters and someone named Augustus Wilkins
who is in New Orleans ca 1810. Cannot tell whether he is
Anne's child or a son of the first marriage. I have done
a lot of research on Jacob and Anne's son, States Wilkins,
a grocer on 125th St in NYC for most of 19th c, and his
descendants in Yonkers and California--if anyone is
interested.

There's a recently published article entitled "The fraudulent Coligny-Rapalje descent". In it John Blythe Dobson shows the errors in the discredited (yet persistent) idea that the immigrant to New Netherland, Joris Jansen Rapalje, was a descendent of a "Gaspard Coligne/Colet de Rapalje".

It is in vol. 2, number 1 of the Annals of Genealogical Research. The article is available at
http://www.genlit.org/agr/viewarticle.php?id=10
So glad you got the photo, and thanks for letting me know where it is available. You should plan to go on the tours of the antebellum houses in Natchez. They hold them annually and they are GREAT! We went a couple of times several years ago. The history of Natchez itself is quite interesting. Joyce

Thank you for your reply. I did get a copy of it from a university library. The picture is also online at the New York Historical Society's website. It is featured in their published book, "Group Dynamics: Family Portraits and Scenes of Everyday Life at the New-York Historical Society".
Thanks for bringing this portrait to general attention. I probably never would have found it otherwise.
George Rapalje, one of the siblings pictured, was described by J.F.H. Claiborne in "Mississippi as a Province, Territory and State" (1880), as "an opulent planter, near Ellis' Cliffs, who had been an officer in the Royal Provincials, and emigrated to West Florida..."
He was an associate of a group of Loyalist planters around Natchez during the time of the Natchez Rebellion in 1781.

I am researching George Rapalje (b. ?) who participated in the Natchez rebellion in 1781. Footnote in Mississippi history book states he was associated with the Livingstons and DeLancys of New York. He was a British loyalist (states that he was a refugee from New York). Is he related to your George Rapalje? We got Rapalje as a middle name from our ancestor's friendship with George.

I am searching for information about my 2nd great grandparents, Charles W. Roberson (1805-?) and Catherine Rappleye/Rapalje (1806NY-abt 1907). They were in Genesee Co NY for the 1840 census, and the birth of their daughter, Sarah E. Roberson, who married Francis Elliott Woodbury Bennett. Another child, William W. Roberson, married the sister of Francis - Caroline Trask Bennett. These four all were in Michigan.
I also have additional Roberson children for Catherine and Charles of Annie (married Arthur Hartman), Elmer, Julia, Elizabeth, and Nancy.
Charles W. Roberson also had a sister, Eliza, who married William Wooley. I know there were lots of Rapalje in the area, but have not been able to tie Catharine to any of them. Suggestions?
Julia Rapalje, Newtown NY, m. Chas Buckley

Hello!! I am researching an ancestor of mine, Michael BUCKLEY....after writing to NYC Municipal Archives for the birth certificate of Michael BUCKLEY, I received a copy in the mail of a Birth Return from Oct 14, 1879 (which is a good sign since he was born in 1879 and I was quite sure in mid-October, though I wasn't certain of the exact date) On the birth return Michael's (I'm still certain this is MY ancestor) parents were listed as Charles H. BUCKLEY and Julia RAPALJE of Newtown. Charles would have been born about 1843, and Julia about 1841.

I was just wondering if anyone had any info about this pair that may help me link my ancestor to them. Also, out of curiosity, where does the name RAPALJE originate....and was the Long Island family Loyalists??

Thanks a Lot for the help!!
Gail :)

Garret & Helena De Nyse Rapalje & children, ca. 1768

I have a short article and photo of a painting of the children from the March 1947 Antiques magazine. The article says the children are Garret, b. 1757, George, b. 1759, Anne, b. 1762, and Jaques, b. 1752. Not my line; article is all I know. If anyone would like a copy of this information, email me your address and I will mail it to you for postage reimbursement, 60 cts., after you receive article.
