Ida Raphael of CA & Oscar L. Lytle of Texas

Oscar Lacurtis Lytle is Afro-American born in 1902 to James C. Lytle and Viola Lott. Both of his parents were born in the state of Texas. . .

Oscar L. Lytle had one sister named DORIS LAZELLE LYTLE, she married Jessie L. Taylor in Texas. . .

Oscar L. Lytle married Miss Ida Raphael, she was born in California. In 1927 they had a son named EUGENE JAMES LYTLE, who was born in Los Angeles County, California. . .

I have been working on my family-tree, and found one of my descendants named LETITIA EDWARDS who married into the LYTLE family. She married Charles F. Lytle, who I believe is the brother of James C. Lytle. . .

My descendant Letitia (Edwards) Lytle and her husband Charles F. Lytle owned and managed a Funeral Home in Victoria, Texas. I believe it was named Lytle Funeral Home. . .

In 1970 Letitia (Edwards) Lytle died, she was listed as the Funeral Director of the Home. Please contact me if you are related to Ida Raphael and Oscar L. Lytle. Thank you.

Rod,
I've now found out a bit more about my Abraham Raphael and i'm not sure he's the one that married Leah.
He was buried in Stockton cemetery in 1940 and was 84 when he died. so the dates are out by 10 years to be the Abraham who married Leah Sape - i made an assumption and i think it may have been wrong! However, i've found no other records of an abraham raphael at that time in that part of the world. Do you know anything more about Abraham and Leah that may make it more obvious whether or not we've got the same abraham?
Inbal

I realise i'm responding to a very old thread but...
I am a descendent of Max and Rachel Raphael from Kowal, Poland. The story goes that max settled in Darlington, England, having followed over his brother David who came some time earlier. I think that Abraham David Raphael (buried with Max in Stockton cemetery) is that brother. Abraham married a Leah Sape from Leeds and lived there for a time, although as he was buried in Stockton it suggests he moved back north in later years. I have a photograph of who i think is Abraham from the 1920s. According to Abraham and Leah's marriage records, his father was Joseph.
I know that max and david/abraham were from a large family but i don't know how many of them left Poland.
I don't know if these are related Raphaels but i thought i'd try!
Hi Margot!
I am not sure, I always assumed he was british... other names that come to mind are Rachel. We have a copy of his birth record... I believe his father's trade is listed shoe maker and traveller (?). My sister knows a little bit more than I do... will check with her this weekend. Arthur did marry an Irish Canadian in Montreal so maybe we are onto something! They were only married for a short while, moved back to London and then my grandmother came back to Montreal alone. We lost touch after that which was over 70 years ago.
Jennifer
The earliest information is that John Raphael was on the 1850 New Orleans Census as a Market man. He marred Modeste Arriola (various spellings show up) of the Mexican Empire (now Texas). They had 1 child named John born circa 1849.

Later, siblings spell the name Rafael.

John is listed from Spain on the 1850 Census.

I can not find John or Modeste on any of the earlier or later censuses.
Ed Elam

Susan,
I wrote to you yesterday but don't see my posting listed so excuse me if you've gotten this twice. This may be a different posting by you. I am also looking into the Raphael family. My grandmother's maiden name was Raphael. She also was from Russia and moved to NY. She had a brother Sam and William and an Uncle Abe. Her mother's name (my great grandmother) was Anna Raphaelson. They shorten their name at some point. All my cousin's go by Raphael. My mom had a cousin Francies Rose who was Abe's daughter.
Gilda

Susan,
I was just searching for my grandmother's family name "Raphael" when I came saw your post. My great grandmother's name was Anna Raphaelson so your post is very interesting to me. The family later changed their name to Raphael so my grandmother's name was Raphael. I also know that my mother had an Uncle Abe. I'm not sure but I think he was my great grandmother's brother. My grandmother's father was named Theodore Raphaelson and was also from Russia. My grandmother Bertha Raphael lived in New York and then later lived in St. Louis when she married my grandfather. I had an Uncle Sam Raphael... my grandmother's brother.
My name is Gilda. I did the familytree DNA test not too long away. Have you done that?

They later settled in St. Louis, Missouri, and John married Melissa Parsons to help raise his children after his first wife died in childbirth when Hattie was born approximately 1884.

Would anyone have any information on this missing link in my family?
Hi, Sorry for my tardy reply I couldn't find the appropriate paper in my genealogy mess. I don't have any Erwins in the Raphael chart...although as you are descended from a Raphael in Ballymena it is the same Raphael family as there is only one in Ireland. They were woodcarvers and came over from Anglessey in around 1650 to work on an abbey...I have not suceeded in tracing them further back than that....yet. I did hear from another researcher that her great grandfather said they went to England from Thessalonika, in which case it is most likely that they were Sephardic Jews who were expulsed from Spain and went to the Ottoman Empire. Somewhere along the line they changed religion as they were Presbyterians in Ireland. Good luck with your research. I suggest you try the Archives of Norther Ireland for any info there may be on the Erwin, this may lead you to the right Raphael on whom I may have further info. Once again forgive my tardiness, Margot

Re: Raphael's from New York

I am also trying to track 'Raphael' from the New York/Pennsylvania/New Jersey area. My info is sketchy as I am directly related to Morris and Rose (Kahn) Raphael, but was adopted out to a distant cousin living in California in 1950. Here's what I've got so far: Morris & Rose immigrated from Russia around 1875, had 6 or 7 boys, and 1 (possibly 2) girls in the 1880s to 1890s. (Abe, Izzy, Joe & Sam are some of the boys' names). My direct knowledge is of the girl, Anna Raphael born in 1888. Her daughter, Doris (born 1911) became my adoptive mother. Apparently, my biological grandmother's name is Edith and my biological mother's name is Shirley. I don't know Edith's age, however, Shirley was born around 1927. I've never been able to find out Edith's & Shirley's last name, but they are directly connected to the Jewish Raphaels decended from Russia. Because California is a closed adoption state, my info has been minimal. There are only 2 people left in my 'family' that were around before I was born, and their memories are like Swiss Chese.
Please let me know if any of this helps you, or if you have any info you can share.
Thanks
Susan Levine

Re: RAPHAEL line from Russia abt.1870

I am trying to track the line of Morris Raphael born 1857 of Russia (married Rose Kahn-Russia) of Jewish lineage. They could have come over in the early 1870s, but I can't find immigration info on Morris. They became U.S. citizens 1876. I don't know how many siblings Morris had, but he and Rose settled in Philadelphia. They had 6 or 7 boys, and 1 (possibly 2) girls. Some of the children may have been born in New York State, or possibly New Jersey. Some of the Raphael children became: tailors, morticians, and police officers. Apparently some of them were very prominent in Atlantic City, N.J. I don't know if this helps you, however, if you have any info to contribute for me I would appreciate it. I'm fairly new at this and I keep running into roadblocks. I don't have anyone in the family to ask questions of, as all the elders I know of are deceased.
Thanks
Susan Levine (adopted maiden name)
