Mimisakz,

It's great to have family stories like that.

Llewellyn's mother, JENNIE ADAMS RASEY had indeed died when Llewellyn was a baby, but his father, DANIEL RASEY didn't die; he left his son with his parents and moved west for a number of years, not returning until Llewellyn was 12, about 1911.

Please send me an email at readitnweep at gmail dot com and we can trade info as I have quite a bit on this part of the family.

Linda

Hi, Linda! Silas Rasey was an uncle of my great-grandfather, Alonzo Chester Rasey. My grandfather, Laurel Alonzo Rasey (son of Alonzo and Nevada), told me of his father going back to Ripley, NY, one summer to help his Uncle Silas build a new barn. Gramp's Mom decided that she didn't want the family to be separated for the entire summer, so she loaded up a wagon, hitched the horse, and got her two kids in and drove it to Ripley from Pennsylvania! Gramp talked about a great summer (he was about 10...so this would have been about 1909.) He told me that his Mom would bake the most wonderful blacberry pies from the beries he and his sister, Gladys, would gather. he also spoke of having a crush on the little girl who lived down the lane. She was redheaded, by Gramp's memory. Gramp also spoke of Llewellyn being the grandson of Silas, and how Silas and his wife raised him as their own. My memory is that Gramp told me that Llewellyn's parents had died. He wasn't sure of the details, as he was only ayoung child at the time. This whole episode, to me, represents a very interesting piece of insight into the kind of family devotion and respect that each branch of the family was held in. Imagine seeing that kind of devotion today! Not to mention the grit of a young woman (Grandma Nevada) driving that horse and carriage with 2 kids for several days to keep the family together!

My grandfather, Laurel Alonzo Rasey, remembers traveling to Ripley,NY, around 1910 to visit Silas Rasey (he was "Uncle" Silas....not quite sure whether it was Uncle or Great-Uncle..I suspect the latter) for most of the summer while his (Laurel's) Dad, Alonzo Chester Rasey, helped him build a barn. Gramp told me that Llewellyn was adopted by Silas and his wife (he was either a grandson or a nephew) and raised as their own. I'd love to share what I have on the Rasey clan with you.

Seeking desc/o Joseph RASEY I (c1734- ) -- free DNA test

The RASEY Y-DNA Surname Project is seeking a patrilineal male descendant of Joseph RASEY I (c1734- ) of Worcester Co., MA, who married Mary HOLLON. A full subsidy is being offered for a 12-marker test.

The test subject must be a male surnamed RASEY (or variation) who descends from Joseph RASEY I on an unbroken line of males, so the subject obviously needs share his RASEY lineage. Subject must also agree to share his test results, which does not necessarily mean sharing his identity with anyone beyond the donor and the project administrator. [Identity of test subjects is privatized for *all* project members.] Acceptance of the subject is at the discretion of the donor and the project administrator.

One descendant of Joseph RASEY I has already been tested, but at least two descendants with matching results are needed to confirm that neither individual has an NPE, a "non-paternal event" (i.e., a hidden adoption or illicit paternity) in his patrilineal line, which is the reason we are willing to fund the testing a second descendant. The benefit for the test subject is proving his own patrilineal line with DNA, at no expense.

For further information about the project, please see the project web site:
http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Rasey/RaseyDNA.shtml

If you wish to accept this offer, please contact me privately at the email address above.

Diana

DNA results: Joseph RASEY not son of Joseph RAZEE

We now have 37-marker Y-DNA test results returned for two important RASEY/RAZEY/RAZEE/etc. progenitors in New England: one a descendant of Joseph RASEY I (b. ca. 1734 of Worcester Co., MA) who married Mary HOLLON, the other a descendant of Joseph RAZEE I (b. 1686 in Attleboro, MA) who married Sarah WHIPPLE and Mercy (WHITE?) DAVIS. They match at only 29 of 37 markers, with a genetic distance of 12. Having 12 differences (12 mutations) in only six or seven generations means they do not share a near common ancestor, thus disproving the assertion that Joseph RASEY I was the son of Joseph RAZEE I. (If they were father and son, we'd expect their 6th generation descendants to match at the level of 35/37 or better.)

They are, however, the same haplogroup subclade and variety, namely, I1b2a-Continental, which may be coincidental or may indicate a more distant common ancestor, who would certainly be back in Europe, before the colonization of the Americans by Europeans. What we need is more individuals tested to "bridge" the gap between them. That is, it could be that each descendant tested is just 6 markers from some common ancestor, which would bring that common ancestor near enough to be living during the period after surnames were adopted.

All RAZEE/RAZEY/RASEY/etc. are encouraged to join the project to 1) prove their connection to their progenitor and to 2) help determine whether there is a closer resemblance between the two groups than the current results indicate. For more details, please see:

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Rasey/RaseyDNA-results.shtml

Diana

Joseph RASEY of Isle La Motte, VT, 1790 census

In the 1790 census, there is a Joseph RASEY living on Isle La Motte, Chittenden [now Grand Isle] Co., VT. He is a man living alone, leaving open the question as to whether he is young and unmarried, or widowed, or just separated from his family. What is the current consensus on his identity?

This Joseph appears to be the father of James RASEY/RACEY/RACY (1792-1883), who married Clarissa HINDS, had many descendants, and appears in these censuses:

1820 - VT: Grand Isle Co.: Alburgh
1830 - NY: Clinton Co.: Plattsburgh
1840 - NY: Franklin Co.: Chateaugay [now Burke]
1850 - NY: Franklin Co.: Burke
1860 - NY: Franklin Co.: Bellmont
1870 - can't find
1880 - NY: Franklin Co.: Bellmont

Unfortunately, there are no RACEY's living near James (other than his own married children) who might give us a clue as to who his siblings might be (and, thus, who his parents were). The job is not made easier by the fact that these locations are near the U.S. border, and there was obviously movement back and forth into Quebec. (Difficult for me because my access to Canadian records is limited and my experience with them just about zip.)

Some have said the Joseph RASEY of Isle La Motte in 1790 is Joseph RASEY II, son of Joseph RASEY I & Mary HOLLON. The data are not inconsistent with this view, but has anyone proven they are the same man? Are there any living male patrilineal descendants of James RASEY/RACEY/RACY out there willing to join the RASEY DNA project and be tested? (I'll split the cost.)

Diana

RASEY - MACLEOD connection debunked

First results are back from Y-DNA testing a descendant of Joseph RASEY I (husband of Mary HOLLON), of Cheshire Co., NH:

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Rasey/RaseyDNA-results.shtml

These results indicate he is Haplogroup I1c (a.k.a., I1b2a), which alone debunks the myth of his descent from a MACLEOD of the Isle of Raasay, Scotland, because the MACLEODs are Haplogroup R1b. Being in different haplogroups means they cannot have shared a common ancestor for thousands of years.

Our next question to be answered is whether this Joseph RASEY I is related to Joseph RAZEE I, of Rhode Island. We are currently awaiting test results of a descendant of the latter, so we will soon have an answer to that question, as well.

The haplotype of our Joseph RASEY I descendant most resembles other individuals with an English origin, which supports the genealogical evidence of RASEY origins (i.e., geographical occurrence of early records) in England, particularly in Wiltshire and Norfolk.

I strongly urge any male RASEY (or variation) to please join the project to further our knowledge of RASEY origins and connections.

Diana

I would like to announce that I have extracted all RASEY / RACEY / RAZEY / etc. records from the United States census for the years 1790 thru 1850 and placed them online at my web site:

http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/Census/Hubs/RaseyCensusHub.shtml

If you find I have made any errors, please don't hesitate to alert me to them. And, especially, if you have found any records I have missed, please share them for the benefit of all. We all appreciate how badly the spelling of this surname is slaughtered by the enumerators and, worse yet, mis-read by the indexers, so I'm bound to have missed some records.

Next goal to complete years 1860-1880...

Have you found any more on Alexander since your posting? I know his second wife was Sarah Ann Henderson and I have the names of their children, if you are interested. I believe Alexander was born about 1834 in New York, the son of John Racy (or Rasey) and Emeline (Smith?). Please contact me if you wish info on his children with Sarah.
Liz

Hi James!
I found the photo in a box at my grandparents a long time ago. I'll have to dig around for it. Someone once told me that it might have been taken in Missouri, but developed in Wisconsin. My great grandmother was Margaret Ann Racy "Maggie" and she was married to Oral Wilson Wolfe around the turn of the century.

In the photo are 3 or 4 elderly people, one a man, sitting on a porch. One of the ladies has a dark complexion like a Native American. What is your current email address? Mine is still nancy_grace@hotmail.com. Once I find it, I can send you a copy.

Who are you related to?
Nancy

I've just made a connection to RASEY, that supposedly descends from your Malcomb. The question in my mind is: Is the story that he changed his name from Malcomb MacLEOD (of Raasay) to Malcomb Macleod RASEY really true? Or is it a legend concocted to connect the New England RASEY family to the MacLEOD's of the Isle of RAASAY? So far, I haven't found anything but secondary sources asserting the connection.

Just to clarify... I originally offered to fully pay for a test of anyone descended from Joseph RASEY III. Now that Jim Tyler, a descendant of Joseph RASEY II, has agreed to share the cost, we have decided to make the offer good for anyone descended from Joseph RASEY I (husband of Mary HOLLON).

Test subject must be a male descended in a direct male line from Joseph RASEY I, meaning they will be surnamed RASEY or some variant spelling, and acceptance is at the discretion of the donors. Subject must be willing to share their pedigree and results and to join both the RASEY and MacLEOD surname projects.

Jim Tyler, another RASEY descendant, has offered to subsidize the other 50% of the cost for testing a descendant of Joseph RASEY I. The stipulations are the same as in my prior message, with the added one that the subject *also* join the MacLeod Surname Project at FamilyTreeDNA.
Seeking descendant of Joseph RASEY III (1783-1868)

I am seeking a direct-male-line descendant of Joseph RASEY III, who was born 2 Feb 1783 in Cheshire Co., NH, married 20 Sep 1807 in NY to Catherine BRUCE, and died 18 Jul 1869 in Barry Co., MI. I'm willing to personally subsidize 50% of the cost of a 37-marker Y-chromosome DNA test for such a male descendant.

I descend from Joseph RASEY III through his daughter, Mary "Polly" RASEY, who married Willard BROWN. As a female, I have no Y-chromosome to be tested and, in any case, I "daughter out" of RASEY with Mary; hence my need to find a male RASEY cousin to be tested.

These conditions apply: The test subject must be a male who descends in a direct male line from Joseph RASEY III; adequate proof of this descent must be shared with the me (e.g., a set of family group sheets connecting the subject to Joseph will do), and acceptance is at my discretion. The subject must join the RASEY project at FamilyTreeDNA and opt for the full 37-marker Y-chromosome DNA test. The subject must sign the Release allowing sharing of their test results. (Please note that sharing test *results* does not necessarily mean sharing one's identity, except, obviously, with the project administrator and the testing company.)

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions or wish to accept my offer. I am offering to subsidize only one test, so the "early bird" gets the subsidy.

I'm also currently working on the Razey side of the family of my fiance's family tree, Henry Razee (RAZEY), is her 5/6G-grandfather, from the Pewsey area, of Wiltshire, unfortunately the "brick wall" I run into is, Edmund Rasy and his wife Jane (surname unknown), but have run into a family tree of a person named Thedtia Rasey - which was the descendant of Malcolm McLeod... Since I'm working on all of her family roots, I come back to this side of the family often... Any info is useful, e-mail me if anyone knows of further information.

Eh....no....Iceland didn't have a king around year 1000AD, and it did most certainly not get a Danish king until the 14th century.

I don't know anything a bout "Harold the black",, though - the only king I know of who was named "The Black" was Halfdan son of Gudrodur, father of Harald "harfagri", king of Norway.

Re: NY Raseys: Silas, Daniel,Llewellyn

I read my earlier posting and I really did not give good information!
Llewellyn Rasey was born in 1899 in PA. His parents were Daniel Rasey and Jennie May Adams. Jennie was the daughter of Henrry Adams, a Civil War veteran. She died when Llewellyn was only a few months old.
Daniel Rasey was the son of Silas Sylvester Rasey. They were from Ashtabula Co, OH and, during Llewellyn's time, settled in Chatauqua Co, NY. Llewellyn died in 1964 and Daniel died in 1931.

Do you have any information about Alexander's son Monroe? He was born Sept. 17, 1860, in Pike Co. Ill after the census would have been done for that year. In 1870, Monroe (aged 9)lived with his parents, Alexander and Sarah Ann, in Ray County, Missouri, census. I found Alexander living with his parents, John and Emeline, in the 1860 Pike Co., census, but no mention of a wife????? Do you have any record of Alexander's marriage? I believe her name was Sarah Ann Henderson (from another son's obituary), but she would have been 29 by 1860, so possibly had an earlier marriage to a Henderson, rather than being born one. Any help appreciated. Liz
