Kati,

I have a great great uncle, Robert W. Rash. He was a pastor in Indiana. I know very little about his descendants. He was born in Ohio and his father was Charles Edward Rash. They were from the Auglaize County area of Ohio. I have photos of Robert if it turns out this is the one and same. You can contact me at azlawman@live.com
What can I say....good work...looks good to me!! Something interesting...Rashes and Sheltons intermarried in DE.

I have never pursued these early VA Rashes, so I have never had contact with anyone about them. Have you ever come across anyone doing Rashes in Britain? I know the DE Rashes are preported to be Welsh, which would make tracing them very hard as the naming is matronymic.

Both of these men were wealthy land owners who imported transports from England to Virginia.

Virginia County Records SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY 1721-1800
DEEDS
DEED BOOK E 1751-1761
page 200
Joseph Martin of Louisa Co., Gent., and Anne, his wife, late wife of Wm. Sandige, late of Spts. Co., Decd., to Francis Meriwether of Spts. Co., Gent. 1/3 part of a tract of 150 a., called Elk Neck, in Spts. Co., purchased by sd. Wm. Sandige in his lifetime of John Davis of King Wm. Co., and by sd. Wm. devised to his son, Wm., who sold it to the sd. Meriwether. Witnesses, Benja. Holloday, James Pulliam, Joseph Rash. Dated, Sept. 1, 1755. Recd. Sept. 2, 1755.

These are just a few of the circumstances that makes me beleive that our Joseph was an indentured servant.and that he is our Joseph Sr.

Explanation of Transportation:

The first major innovation in eighteenth-century penal practice was the extensive use of transportation. Although there was some idea that transportation might lead to the reformation of the offender, the primary motivations behind this punishment were deterrence and the exile of hardened criminals from society.

Although some convicts were transported in the seventeenth century, it had to be done at their own expense or at the expense of merchants or shipowners. In the early eighteenth century there was a desire to extend transportation as a way of creating a more effective alternative to the death penalty (in terms of deterring crime) than benefit of clergy and whipping. In 1718 the first Transportation Act allowed the courts to sentence felons guilty of offences subject to benefit of clergy to seven years transportation to America. In 1720 a further statute authorized payments by the state to the merchants who contracted to take the convicts to America.

The first Transportation Act also allowed those guilty of capital offences and pardoned by the king to be sentenced to transportation, and it established returning from transportation as a capital offence.

In 1776 transportation was halted by the outbreak of war with America. Although convicts continued to be sentenced to transportation, male convicts were confined to hard labour in hulks on the Thames, while women were imprisoned. Transportation resumed in 1787 with a new destination: Australia. This was seen as a more serious punishment than imprisonment, since it involved exile to a distant land.

Heres proof that some of the indentures from the Ship Dorsetshire were in SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY Va. during this time frame ;
The Virginia Gazette,
Thursday, April 24, 1746. Number 508. Page 3, Column 2.

Ran away from the Subscriber, in Fredericksburg, on Saturday Night the 12th Instant, a servant Man, named Henry-Valentine Beveradge: He is an Englishman, and came into the Country last July, in the Dorsetshire, Capt. Bowman, a Convict; a middle siz'd Fellow, of a ruddy complexion, aged about 28, with dark Hair. Had on when he went away, a light colour'd Kersey Coat, an Oznabrig Shirt, a pair of Oznabrig Trowsers, a Felt Hat, Shoes and stockings, and is a Skinner or Tanner by Trade. It's suppos'd he has forg'd a Pass. Whoever brings the said servant to me, shall have three Pistoles reward, and all reasonable charges

Samuel Hilldrup. (Owner)

The parish records show on 14 November 1781 a processioning order for a precinct between the south fork of Pritties Creek, the top of the Little Mountain (the Louisa Co. line) and the Orange Co. line: "lands of William Sims, James Isbell, Henry Shelton,

(Henry Shelton , theft: specified place, 08 Dec 1731.
The Proceedings of the Old Bailey Ref: t17311208-31

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trial Summary:
Crime(s): theft : specified place,
Punishment Type: transportation,
(Punishment details may be provided at the end of the trial.)
Verdict: Part Guilty: theft under 1s,
Punishment: Transportation)

and Joseph Rash. (William Sims was an appraiser of Mr. Thomas Barlow's estate in 1778; Henry Shelton had daughters who married James Isbell, Jr. and John William Crostwaite, who died in 1783 on Beaver Creek, Wilkes Co., NC, where his land was acquired by Elder John Barlow.)" This material comes from a book, "Bunches of Barlows -- The Descendants of John Barlow of Wilkes Co, NC.," by Elizabeth H. Michaels and John O Hawkins

Ron theres a wahole lot of circumstantial evidence here, what do you think???
Joe Rash

Re: Kentucky Branch of the Rash Name

RASH FAMILY. A notable name in and around Winchester for a century has been that of the Rash Family. The old Rash home is four miles north of Winchester (Clark Co.). One of its owners and occupants for many years was Rev. William Samuel Rash, who lived there while he preached at Friendship Church, the building of which stood in the present cemetery at Winchester. Rev. William S. Rash was born in Clark County February 13, 1783, and died June 9, 1859. He was a pioneer "Hardshell" Baptist Preacher. He also served as a soldier in the War of 1812 and was captured at the Battle of River Raisin by the Indians, but made his escape by night. One of his Kentucky comrades, Leonard Beall, was not so fortunate, and was made to "run the gauntlet" and was a cripple from the experience the rest of his life. Rev. William S. Rash married Elizabeth Berry, who lived to a great age. His son, Rev. A.D. Rash, was born June 22, 1823, and died March 18, 1901. William S. Rash owned about 500 acres, much of it owned by his son, Lewis Rash, but eventually sold.
Thomas Rash, a grandson of Rev. William S. Rash, was born at the old homestead January 27, 1836, and for a quarter of a century was a merchant at Winchester, being a partner with his brother W.D. four or five years. At a still later period he re-engaged in merchandising and continued that occupation for twenty years until 1904 when he retired to his farm on Boonesboro Pike, four miles from Winchester. More recently he returned to Winchester, and has erected a pleasant home on Crescent Creek.
At the age of 40 Thomas Rash married Mary Ogden, whose maiden name was Baldwin. She was born in Lexington, a daughter of William and Elizabeth Baldwin, who came from England to Pennsylvania and settled in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1835. William Baldwin and three of his sons were soldiers during the War between the States in the Confederate Army with Morgan. He was reported missing and is supposed to have been killed in battle. The son William was killed at Green River Bridge, while Samuel and John served all through the war. The families of William and John are still represented at Winchester."
Source: "History of Kentucky, by William Elsey Connelley and E.M. Coulter, PhD, in 5 Volumes. Vol 5, Pg286. The American Historical Society, Chicago and New York, 1922."

I think your John was the brother to William Samuel Rash, who were sons of William Rash Sr.(S/O Joseph Rash Sr.) and Elizabeth Warren(D/O Samuel Warren) of Spotsylvania County Virginia. He came to Wilkes County Nc. (Late 1780`s)shortly after his brother arrived, but is believed to have moved to Clark County between 1800 and 1810
1850 Census says William Samuel Rash was born in Virginia, probably Spotsylvania County..He was a slave owner with about 24 slaves in 1850.

Richard Joseph Rash, NC.

This is a photo of the Rash family of Ashe Co, N.C. I can identify a few of the people in this family but need help to positively identify the others. I know none standing in the back row. Seated left to right man with boy in lap unknown, man with hat on knee is Benjamin Elkin Rash, next to Benjamin E. Rash is his wife Julia Ann ( maiden name unknown ), next to Julia the young boy seated in the older man's lap is Lemuel Graham ( Ollie ) Rash son of Benjamin & Julia, the unknown man holding Lemuel is believed to be Benjamin Elkin Rash father David L. Rash, seated to David ( we believe ) is his wife Rhoda Etta Eastridge....Benjamin Elkin Rash was born in 1882, by the look of his age in the photo I would say he was 2 years old when this photo was taken, making this photo dated 1884. If you are related to this family and can identify anyone in this photo I would deeply appreciate your help. Thank you in advance: Glenda from http://www.Myblueangel.net

Daniel Bailey RASH

Above gent was my GGrandfather. I have been searching for 14-15 years to find birth country. He came to NZ between 1840 and 1852 - how I don't know, but I am guessing that perhaps he arrived on a whaler out of Mass N.H. or DE. Reason for this assumption is that I think he was a friend of my Ggrandmother's first husband NATHANIEL JENNESS b 1814 N.H. who died in Welington in 1848. Daniel married Matilda Jenness nee Minifie in 1853 and died in prison after a seizure in 1859. I am guessing also about age at death as no official record in coroners report but estimated as about 35 which gives a birth year of circa 1824.

One of the reasons I think he may be from USA is the use of BAILEY as a second name - perhaps mothers maiden name?

Other name associated with him is PRESLEY - this name given as a second name to my grandfather (WILLIAM PRESLEY RASH
born 1855 Wellington) and he in turn gave it to one of his sone (ALAN PRESLEY RASH born 1894).

In perusing Ancestry and several other websites both or UK and USA there seems a cluster of RASH families in the N.W states in line with my thinking.

Can anyone help in any way?

Noeline Larkin (nee Rash), Auckland, New Zealand

Re: Rash Family - KIWI CONNECTION?

I missed your message about the symposium in DE and it would be somewhat useless as I live in New Zealand. I am researching DANIEL BAILEY RASH my GGrandfather birth country unknown, but thought to have come to NZ between 1840 and 1852 maybe on a whaler out of Mass, Delaware or New Hampshire. He was a ships carpenter and possibly a friend of Nathaniel JENNESS born New Hampshire 1816 who was first husband of my Ggrandmother MATILDA nee MINIFIE.

I have trying to find the origin of this gentleman for some
14 years without one clue. The info is sparce- a marriage cert to Matilda JENNESS (widow) in Wellington NZ (1853) giving few details except his occupation, and a death cert, burial entry, and coroners report (he died suddenly in prison).

I am hoping with the superior internet facilities now available somebody will be able to point me in the right direction.

Incidently, the other reason I thought he may have been American was the second name of Bailey - maybe his mothers maiden name? My grandfather was WILLIAM PRESLEY RASH (born 1855 Wellington)and the name PRESLEY does not trace to Matilda's side - maybe this name is also significant. William also gave this name PRESLEY to one of his sons
(ALAN PRESLEY RASH born Wellington 1894)

Look forward to your comments

Cliff and Ron and several other excellent researchers, way before any of us, had most of the Rash family researched before I came on the scene. I was blessed to have just a piece of good ancestry handed down to me by my maternal grandfathers aunt, my great aunt, who was born a Rash, and done alot of research before my mother started her research. She would be the one we owe so much credit for having so much information on the family. I was given the books of Oscar Doane Lambert, who wrote at least seven(7) books that were published works, etc. It does relate the ties between families, some migrated from the Carolinas to the Ohio Valley. Some went south and ended up in Texas or even further New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona. There are even some of the Rash family members found in California, during the gold rush years. It is a huge family. There were so many immigrants from other countries, that records were not kept of, and there are some that even changed their name upon arrival. It is almost impossible to trace, who came from where. Although, I must say, I love to do research, and try to learn about where I came from. I have so many surnames that I am researching, if I listed them, it would be longer than any book I have ever read. I will post some of the heads of families that I am researching and the years and areas they lived. Happy hunting.

Rash in Hopkins Co, TX

I am seeking information on Mary Rash, daughter of John N. & Nancy Rash and sister of Nathan Edward Rash.

Based on information passed on to me by my grandmother, "Mary Ann Rash Willis" married Hiram Columbus Moore in January 1891; they had one child, George Columbus Moore (my great-grandfather) in 1892. The following year, Hiram (aka "Lum") was killed at Ed Rash's gin in Cumby, Hopkins Co, TX. This Ed Rash is supposedly Mary Ann's brother.

In the 1900 Hopkins Co, TX census, George C Moore is living with step-siblings, Lula, Ernest, and Charley Willis. I cannot find any record of Mary Ann at all. My question is whether anyone has any verifiable info regarding John N Rash's daughter, Mary, born circa 1854; and, if she is the one who married a Mr Willis and Hiram "Lum" Moore.

Thanks for any assistance!

Jerry Cutts
Dallas TX
cutts_rsrch@yahoo.com

I am looking for the parents & correct Rash line for Nelson Bell Rash (born May 1850). He died Aug. 30, 1916 in Middlesboro, KY. He married Alice Dudley Van Meter (B. 1861, Hardy Co., VA -now West VA) in 1884. Nelson Rash was a retail shoe merchant in Middlesboro, KY, sometime after 1910 (according to her obit.) I believe he was a breeder of short-horn cattle in KY prior to 1910 (although the 1900 Christianburg, KY census lists "farmer" as his occupation.) I would be very interested in any information you can give me regarding this line of the Rash family. It is my assumption that his mother's maiden name may have been "Bell", since it was the custom to use her maiden name as the middle name for a child. Thanks!

Hi, My name is Kathy Rash Thomison and I have been to Rash, AL. There is hardly anything there anymore and I was a bit disappointed. It is located just ourside of Stevenson, AL - on highway 53 I think. It is in Northern AL. If you contact the people at the Stevenson Train Station you can purchase a book called the Stevenson Story and it has a fair amount of Rash information in it. I am also a descendant of William. My GG Grandfather was Lorenzo Dow Rash and he was born in Rash & moved to MO when he was about 12. I would love to exchange information with you. TXrredhead2000@yahoo.com
Kathy
