At last I have found someone who overlaps my family! Olive Jane Acworth was the sister of my GGF, Raynor John Acworth.
Another brother was Foster George, and in the 1891 census he was living at Bedford, with Florence "Maskleigh" b1882, Peckham Surrey, listed as niece. Must be Rashleigh, surely?
I have a lot of information on the Acworths should you need any, going back to James Acworth b1732.
Incidentally, Olive had ten siblings; I have burials for the males but not females, Alfred Elijah was married to a Lydia and buried 12/1931 Edmonton Alberta. Are you in Canada?
Incidentally, in 1878, Olive signed as a witness at Raynor Johns marriage to Selina Henrietta Williams.
Best Regards
Graham Thurston

Correction to previous Rasheigh message

Dear All

Please note a correction to my e-mail of April 27, 2009 to all Rashleigh list members (below, for your convenience). Jonathan Rashleigh did not sell his lands IN Menabilly as I wrote. He sold his lands TO Menabilly.

Yours sincerely

Ronnie Tucker

Dear List Members

I am researching the Rashleighs who lived in County Cork, Ireland and
Fowey and Menabilly, Cornwall in the 17 and 18 centuries as well as
their connections with the BELCHER and TRESILIAN (TRESSILLIAN) families.

My gggg grandmother is said to have been a Lady Hope RASHLEIGH of
Fowey in Cornwall. She married a John BELCHER and they had at least 2
sons Robert Henry and William (b. 1745; d. April 17, 1827 in Bandon,
County Cork). William is said to have married a Margaret Tressillian
(or Tresilian) from whom a long line of Belchers is descended. Many
of those Belcher descendants were given Rashleigh as a forename down
through the generations to the present day.

William and Margaret had a large family including Capt. Robert
Tresilian BELCHER J.P. (d. 1849) who commanded a Company of the 32nd
Regiment at the Battle of Waterloo. He married Alicia TRESILIAN and
they lived in Bandon, County Cork. The Tresilians were landowners at
Ballyvolane in the Parish of Ballinadee, County Cork, Ireland. The
forename Treslian also appears in later generations of the Belcher
family.

Another son of William and Margaret, Dr. John BELCHER M.D. (b. July
17, 1809 in Bandon, County Cork), from whom I am descended, lived some
of his life in Morice Town, Stoke Damerel, Devonshire but died back in
Bandon on April 1, 1871. There appears to have been much movement
between Devon, Cornwall and Cork over the years.

Indeed, the original patron-saint of the parish church at Fowey in
Cornwall was St. Barre, supposed to have been St. Barrus or Fimbarrus,
the first Bishop of Cork, who, according to William of Worcester, was
buried at Fowey. St. Finbarr's Cathedral in Cork City carries his
name to the present day. So connections between Cork and Cornwall run
long and deep.

There have been Rashleighs in the Bandon area at least since 1588 and
the time of Elizabeth I's Munster Plantation. The most successful
"undertaker" of that plantation in Cork was reputedly a Phane
BEECHER. Rashleigh is one of the names of those that came over and
was allocated a parcel of land from the 14,000 acres granted to
Beecher. (Source: The History of Bandon by George Bennett)

But I have not yet been able to find Lady Hope BELCHER (nee RASHLEIGH)
or tie her to either the Rashleighs of Cork or the Rashleighs of
Cornwall.

One source records that a Jonathan RASHLEIGH sold all his land in
Menabilly, Cornwall and moved to Ballinadee, County Cork in Ireland in
1670. Ballinadee is 9.5km from Bandon, the seat of the Belchers. The
same Jonathan RASHLEIGH is reported to have had at least 3 children:
Jane m. William PHIPP, John m. Dorothy LUCAS and Sarah m. 1729 Joseph
DAUNT. Sarah is recorded as the daughter of John RASHLEIGH of
Cloncoose and Ballinadee.

John and Dorothy in turn had many children including John who married
Anne GUMBLETON of Castle Richard, County Waterford, Ireland and
another son Jasper who died in 1778 in Philadephia. They had many
daughters but I do not have the names.

John and Anne in turn had 2 daughters: Dorothea m. Thomas LUCAS, and
Mary Ann m. John COLLIS of Kinsale, County Cork, Ireland.

It is quite possible that John Thomas Rashleigh LUCAS J.P. (b. 1863)
is descended from Dorothea and Thomas. He married Grace Ellen DONOVAN
in 1900.

In Cork and Ross Wills (1548-1800) by W. P. W. Phillimore (London,
1910), there is a record of the probate of the will of a John
RASHLEIGH of Clonquose in 1747. Other probated wills recorded by
Phillimore are: Edward RASHLIGH of Clonquose (1673), Elizabeth
RASHLEY of Ballymodan (adjacent parish) (1683), Francis RASHLEIGH of
Cork (1705), Edward RASHLIGH of Bandonbridge (now just Bandon) (1714),
and John RASHLEIGH of Cloncoos (1771).

That is the extent of my knowledge presently. I would appreciate if
anyone can shed light on Lady Hope BELCHER (nee RASHLEIGH), and the
connections between and movements of the Rashleigh, Belcher and
Tresilian (Tressillian) families in Cork, Cornwall and Devon.

Yours sincerely

Ronnie Tucker

E-Mail: ronald_tucker@esatclear.ie

Hello,

My husband is related to the Horsley family from Derbyshire. I am investigating the possibility that one Erasmus Thomas Horsley was connected to the Rashleigh's of Constantine in Cornwall. I have found another member who has him in her tree as being the son of Thomas Rashleigh. Do you know anything about this? I have tried contacting her, but have not yet received a reply. As far as the Horsley family are concerned, Erasmus's father was a Thomas (believed Horsley) but they do not know who his mother was. I would be grateful for any information you have.
Kind regards,
Peta

The Thomas George Rashleigh who lived in Houghton county Michigan in 1913 was involved in Seeberville murders
of Louis Tijan and Steve Putrich. Thomas was hired as a private security guard for the notorious Waddell thugs that
MacNaughton hired to break the striking miners. It is documted in Steve Lehto's book " Death's Door " The truth Behind Michigan's Largest Mass Murder. Facinating account of the true story of the Italian Hall murders of over 70 people including children.
Volunteer
Alicia

Rashleigh from Cornwall to Michigan

John Rashleigh was born in Michigan in 1943 and has just returned to the US from visiting us here in the UK. He believes that his ancestors came from Cornwall and also has reason to believe that the Cornish Rashleighs emigrated to Michigan and that several generations lived in the Houghton area.

There were a number of Rashleigh families living in Cornwall during the 19th Century - one large family lived in Constantine and can be traced back to the 1500's.

I have been researching family history for a number of years and would like to help John trace his English ancestry. If there is anyone out there who is able to help please contact me.

Regards
Carol

Hello

I know that this thread started by Sheryl Caldwell is dated 2001 but I'm hoping you can help me with this Rashleigh family. Sheryl's half brother John Rashleigh has just visited us in the UK and has information to suggest that his Rashleigh roots are in Cornwall. I have been studying family history for some years and would like to help John find his English ancestors.

Sheryl gave up on the Rashleigh research several years ago since she was not a Rashleigh by birth - her mother married twice - Sheryl is from her first marriage and her mother then married a Rashleigh and had John. But Sheryl seems to think that this Rashleigh family lived in Michigan - more specifically the Houghton area.

If you are able to help me please contact me at carol@alansmith.co.uk

Regards
Carol

I have been gathering info on the Rashleigh lines that are based in Montana and Kansas. Trying to fit together all the Rashleighs into one huge tree. If you are researching a line that branched out from William Moreland Rashleigh in Kansas or Thoamas Rashleigh in Montana - please let me know. It would be great to fit these two large pieces of the Rashleigh puzzle in their proper place.

Robert RASHLEIGH - England

Scant details I'm afraid, but family bible gives hand written inscription "Robert Rashleigh Esq".

Other inscriptions in same bible include "John Hammond 1710": "John Davis son of (??) and Elizabeth, baptised 1736" (could possibly be 1734): "Mary Keene, 1st May 1743": "Daniel Hussey 7th May 1776": and "Thomas Hussey".

This line should lead to the Plant family, one of whom (James) was born 1893 in Greenwich area of what is now London, but was previously part of Kent, although not sure they originated from there.

I'd be grateful for any information

Rashleigh History Origin

The fact that the Rashleighs share that common ancestry and use many of the same names over and over again makes this a "tough bunch" to trace even though it is a distinctive name. I have added to the Rashleigh Tree but only have the line back to 1690 before a dead end. I'd love to compare lines.

Rashleigh Family Tree

True the Menabilly Rashleigh line was alive and well in 1690, but my line is still running side by side, it seems to be an earlier offshoot, and I am still trying to find where it links in to the more famous line. Our line could have possibly branched off from Devon prior to the move to Cornwall. So far William Jane Rashleigh in Gunwalloe, Cornwall are our earliest provable line. This line is possibly of the Patherick and Phillip line from Gunwalloe and still no proof where we tie in yet to the more noteable line.

Anyone with any extensive early Rashleigh research, please email off list so we can compare early lines - rfrashle@wcnet.org

Robert Rashleigh Drowned

Bather is Drowned in Calumet & Heckla Swimming Pool

Robert Rashleigh, aged 27, loses life in bathouse plunge - efforts to revive him by means of pulmotor prove unavailing.

Calumet, Michigan - Robert Rashleigh, aged 27, was drowned in the pool at the Calumet & Heckla bathouse yesterday afternoon while in the company of a dozen other bathers. Rashleigh was unaquainted with any of the others it is said.

The fatality occured about 2:30 o'clock. Rashleigh stepped into the shallow end of the pool and was noted by some of the other bathers as he entered. They were engaged in aquatic sports, however, and no further attention was paid to the stranger for some time.

Finally one of the swimmers noted that Rashleigh had disappeared and a search resulted in the discovery of his body at the bottom of the pool. A pulmotor was brought into use in an attempt to resusitate him, but to no avail.

Coroner William Fisher conducted an inquest last night, the finding of the jury being in accord with the statement here given of the circumstances. The deceased resided in Raymbaultown.

Jonathan Rashleigh, Emily Jose

Thomas Brenton, b. 1868, Australia, son of Thomas Brenton and Susan Jose, married Emily Jane Rashleigh b. abt. 1871. According to marriage record, her parents were Jonathan Rashleigh and Emily Jane Jose.

From BMD records, Jonathan Rashleigh and Emily Jose married March 1868, Falmouth, Cornwall, Eng. vol 10a, pg. 225

Trying to find out if these people are the right parents for Emily Jane Rashleigh.

Also trying to find out if Emily Jane Jose is the daughter of William Jose and Jane Hicks of Kenwyn, Cornwall Co, Eng.

What is leading me in this direction is that my great great grandfather, John Jose, son of William Jose and Jane Hicks, named his second born son, John Rashleigh Jose.

I have always wondered where the middle name of Rashleigh might have come from and think now I might have found the answer.

I know of Christopher Bellott he was High Sheriff of Cornwall. I think the Bellotts were great friends of the Rashleighs as they occur in records. Sometimes your name is spelt Rasley which is probably how they pronounced it. Michael Billett.
