Anyone have anything on William Augustus Ratcliff and his descendants. My sons are descendants of his son William Harvey Ratcliff. Also, any info on William Harvey Ratcliff's wife Caledonia Seale from Louisiana. Oral family history says that William Harvey Ratcliff and one of his brothers married two Seale daughters from Louisiana.

My line is:
Silas Ratliff, born ca 1794
Sarah Jane Ratliff, born 1837 who married Jackson Simmons
Mary Ann Simmons, born 1861 who married Melvin Perry Cox

Silas had a son named Reuben, as well as Eli, James, Robert and daughters, Mary, Nancy and Sarah Jane.

Silas came to northeast Tennessee from southwest VA around 1854. He was married to Winna Kilgore, daughter of Rufus Ralph Kilgore, of Scott County, VA.

The problem that I've had with the Ratliffs/Ratcliff line is that they all had similar names, i.e., Silas, Reuben, Eli and Robert.

I came across a previous thread about your query of Maranda Jane Ratcliffe but couldn't locate it. Maranda/Miranda is the daughter of John Floyd Ratcliffe and Sarah Jane Adams of Giles County VA. They had at least 12 children and she apprears to be the 2nd youngest. Her paternal grandparents were Sumner A and Nancy Manning(Arnold) Ratcliffe. Note that the Ratcliffe name has several spellings. Some based on phonical to writing errors and others to family feuds.

Please Contact Me, I have information.

My name is Terrie Mogavero (momoffour62@hotmail.com) - My home phone is 903-759-1513 and my cell is 903-241-4262. Lula Ratcliff is my great grandmother. She had several children - your father Virgil Beecher Coleman was my great uncle. My grandfather Coleman Columbus (Colie) Carver was his half brother. I have extensive information on her. please contact me. I'd like to know who you are. The children of Lula and John Henry were: Gus Ruhlin(sp?) Coleman who died as an infant and is buried by John Henry Coleman in Ratcliff, TX. There were surviving children: Ozella (the only girl), Otho Purella (Uncle Curly), Virgil Beecher, and John Sherman (Uncle Shermie). After John Coleman died, Lula married Ben D. Carver (my great grandfather) and had three more children: Coleman Columbus Carver (my grandfather), Charlie Lester Carver (died at 3-4 months old) and Estella Carver (also died as an infant). Lula died when she was 36 - reportedly from never having fully recovered from the last childbirth. Uncle Beecher gave me much information on the family and his mother. I used to go over on the weekends to his house and collect as much information as I could. I know the cemeteries where both John and Lula are buried in Ratcliff, TX. John's grave is marked - but Lula's is unmarked. They were buried in separate cemeteries. The two babies she had by Ben Carver that died are buried next to her. I was at the cemetery this month (July 2009) and still unable to locate the grave. I do have some information on an approximate area though. Also - Lula's middle name may not be Lavina - It is very possibly Elizabeth. She was born in Meridian, Mississippi and the census records show the middle initial to be "E" not "L". Uncle Beecher told me he was uncertain of her middle name - he'd heard her called both. I also have a possible contact in Lufkin that may can clarify which one it was. Lula had eloped with John Coleman who was actually her 1st cousin..He was much older than she was and when she eloped they thought she'd drown in the nearby creek. An extensive search was held and finally a neighbor came and told her father what had actually happened. Her brothers took off in search of her but they were far enough ahead to have already married...There is a newspaper clipping I have a copy of that documents this...On the back of the article is another article where the infamous Lizzie Borden was aquitted. That just lets you know the time frame a little better - no correlation between the two.

Clifford Ratcliff Obituary (1918, AR-2008, FL)

Northwest Florida Daily News

Feb. 4, 1918 to April 22, 2008. Born in Willow, Ark., to Augustus Winfield Ratcliff and Ethel Velvet Pritchard, he was the eldest of 10 children.
A child of the Depression, he learned his life work as a welder through the Civilian Conservation Corp. While working in the shipyards in Mobile, Ala., he met and married the love of his life Edna Pearl McDonald. He joined the Navy in March of 1945 and served with the Seabees until April 1946. Cliff saw the Pacific through a porthole and never liked to go out in the Gulf because of his "experiences" during the war.
After a time of farming in the Repton, Ala., area, he took up his welding trade again, which brought him to Eglin. He spent years at Eglin working for Boeing and Civil Service. He was a master welder. In 1952, the family moved to Destin, Fla., where he owned the Destin Courts (now Guglielmo's) and bought the Flamingo Motel in 1960.
He and Edna raised two children and he resided in Destin until his death. His passion was helping his friends and family with anything from welding boat trailers to fixing plumbing and electrical problems. He was an inventor of many things that are still used by his family. He was always concerned with using what you had (that Depression era mentality again) and making it work. He had a work ethic that is seldom seen today.
Cliff's parents, wife, Edna, brothers, Ernest and Bob, have already welcomed him into the presence of the Lord. What a reunion we will have.
Cliff is survived by his son, Dr. Robert Ratcliff and wife Becky of Destin; and a daughter, Ann Shirah and husband Bill of Destin; grand children, Dr. Mandy Jackson and husband Dr. Brad Jackson of Birmingham, Ala., Rob Ratcliff and wife Dr. Misha Ratcliff of Destin, Dr. Jeff Shirah of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Kathleen Shirah of Fort Walton Beach. Also surviving are great-grand children, Virginia, Elizabeth and Fowler Jackson, and Robert Mitchell Ratcliff. Cliff's surviving siblings are brothers, Vernard and Dewey Ratcliff; and sisters, Verda Green, Ann Schisler, Jean Brooks, Joy Jones and Gussie Wylie.
Special thanks go to the staff at The Manor at Bluewater Bay for their loving kindness and Covenant Hospice for being there for the journey's end. We are so grateful for the first responders of the Destin Fire Department for their help and care. We are so blessed.
Most of all we thank our Lord Jesus for sending the angels to bring Cliff to his home eternal.
Services will be held at First Baptist Church of Destin on Friday, April 25. A visitation will start at 2 p.m. and services will be at 3 p.m. A fellowship will follow immediately after the service in the fellowship hall. Graveside services for the family will follow after the fellowship.
Flowers are accepted, or donations to First Baptist Church, Children's Recreation Park, 201 Beach Drive, Destin, FL 32541, will be lovingly appreciated.
Davis-Watkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Scottish Ratcliff Family - Phillips -Metzer

I am trying to find the ancestry of the family of John Phillips Ratcliff, born 8 Dec 1853 in Wishaw, Lanark, Scotland, to Henry Ratcliff and Euphamie Phillips. John had Siblings: Elizabeth (known as "Easy") who married Robert Hielson, Margaret, who married George (or Geordie) Hood, Mary, who married John Anderson, and Henry wo married Annie, whose maiden name is unknown.

The father, Henry (who married Euphamie), had a brother Alexander, who was called "Sandy", who left Scotland and went to the Isle of Man.

As far as I know, the rest of the kids came to America, and settled in the midwest, generally, Oklahoma and Kansas.

Anyone know these folks???
Bonnie

The complete Richard Ratcliff Family book is on the internet, 493 pages. These are the descendants of Richard Ratcliff who came to Maryland from England in about 1681. You can download different pages that apply to you if this is your line. The book is out of print but some historical libraries have copies.
It was written by Clarence Ratcliff
www.familytree.ratcliffs.net/rr/ or the main site is
www.familytree.ratcliffs.net
I have been researching my Ratcliff ancesstors also. You might just Google the name you are looking for to see what happens

My husband is a Ratcliff in Kansas. But I do know that his family came up from Greenup County, KY about 1870's. They made it to Missouri & decided to split up. There was 2 brothers (i think) --anyway the family split & one went south to the Abilene area down to Matador, TX. The other one went to Illinios area I believe. Is this part of your history??? We have George Ratcliff in our family also. Oh, the family name was originally from England--Ratcliffe Then was diluted over the years.

Terri

Dear Connie,

Just a quick look at census shows:
1930 census, Pea Ridge, Brown Co, IL
Carl H. Paul 5
Margaret E 2
(blank) 7/12
1900 census, Concord Twp, Adams Co has
Chipman Ratcliff 32, wife Carrie B, 29, children:
Carl H. 7
Gladys O. 4
1880 census, Concord Twp, Adams Co UL has
John Ratcliff 58, wife Ann J 49, children:
Mary P. 25
Harriet M. 23
Myron 17
Ulysses A. 14
Chipman 12
Idella 5
Bryant H 2
1850 census, Concord Twp, Adams Com, IL
Joseph Ratliff 69 M farmer b. Va.
Mary 67 F b. Va
John 29 M farmer b. Ky
Isabella McClure 17 F
Joseph Gore 13 m b. Ill
This Joseph was a son of Thomas Ratcliff, who died in 1796 in Woodford Co, Ky. He married Mary Bryant and moved to Illinois.

This is just a quick look, and you should verify every by going to records other than just the census.

WARNING - A lot of erroneous information about this family has been posted on the internet. I believe that a paid researcher in the 1800's must have fabricated information in order to produce a family tree for a client. If you find your uncle's book, it is possible that he may have copied this same information. If you find exact names and middle names and dates of birth and death and spouses for all of Thomas' children, they are wrong. I know because the information for my branch of the family is wrong in every respect - dates are wrong, spouses names are wrong, and there is a fabricated middle name. If any middle name or ancestors are given for Thomas, they are probably fabricated. If you ever find a copy of your uncle's book, I would like to get a copy, hoping he will identify his sources. Hopefully he did not copy the wrong information and has good data.

Sincerely,

Thomas H. Hutzelman
great-great-great-great-grandson of Thomas Ratcliff of Woodford Co, Ky.

I'm searching for information on my grandfather, James Edward Ratcliff. All I know about him is that he was a coal minor in or near Brownsville W. Virgina where my mother, Hazel Victoria, the youngest of his three known children was born in 1915. Her sister's name was Mary and her Brother, the eldest, name was also James Ratcliff. He was married to Jenney Beth King.

You may want to try the different variation of Ratcliff
and look under that family to see if there are any children listed as black or other.

Its best to try to start from the 1930 census and work your way back on 1900 census they give birth dates except the day also if you going back around the bad part of american history you may want to check the slave list.
Hope this helps
