dear Sandra, my grandfather was August Byers. He is buried in Moville IA along with his first wife Hilda and Martha Pearl. My mothers name is Mona. I Found the ship manifest that your grandmother Lena came over on. She was 6 years old. The ship was the Cimbria it arrived on Nov. 16 1881 at the port of New York. Edith B. Rath, daughter of David E. Rath and Edith Virtue Ballantyne recently passed away at age 83. Her Mason & Hamlin grand piano is being restored and will be dedicated in a concert (target date Oct 17th or 18th) at Sage Granada Park United Methodist Church in Alhambra, CA. We will be showing pictures and recordings of Edith and the Rath Meat Packing Company. Please advise if you can supply more photos, articles, obits. etc.

Dear Pam,
The daughter of David E. Rath, Edith Ballantyne Rath recently passed in San Gabriel, CA at the age of 83. Her father, David E. Rath gave a 1914 Mason & Hamlin grand piano to Edith's mother, Edith Virtue Bsllantyne as a wedding present in 1918. This piano was kept by Edith but fell into disrepair. I am the Conservator and work closely with Sage Granada Park United Methodist Church who agreed to full restore this beautiful instrument which took around 5 months. We will be having a piano dedication concert (target date Oct 17th or 18th)and will also display photos and articles of the Rath Meat Packing Company (Waterloo, Iowa). We would love to have access to more photos and articles of the Rath family and company and also to invite anyone related to the company to attend or send notes of remembrance of their time working there. Let me know if you are interested in supporting this event called the Edith B. Rath Mason & Hamlin Memorial Concert.

I come from a family of Rath's located in the Colborne area. There are approx 20 of us. My grandfather passed away last year. I am not sure where he immigrated from but he first arrived on the east coast of Canada.

He loved to play golf, bowl, and play cards. He also loved his family and granddaughters.

He worked at HON as a supervisor retiring in 1995 after 18 years of employment.

Larry Rath will officiate the services. Casket bearers are Wayne Rath, Shawn Rath, Brian Rath, Bill Rath, Allan Rath and Steve Prybil. Honorary casket bearers are Kenny Wieland, Dale Rath, Tim Colbert and Dave Frank. Burial will be at Riverside Public Cemetery.

Mr. Rath was born Feb. 10, 1913, in Stillwater, Okla., the son of William and Jennie Schmidt Rath. He married Rita Kueneman Feb. 14, 1944, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Riverside.

He was a farmer in the Riverside area his entire life and was a jack-of-all-trades. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and spending time with his dogs.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Ron Rath and wife Kathy of Riverside; three grandsons, Shawn Rath and wife Chris, Wayne Rath and wife Kristen and Brian Rath; four great-grandchildren, Jordan, Chase, Nicolas and Kaylee; a brother, Dale Rath and wife Jean of Riverside; and a sister, Clarice Torgerson of Kansas City, Mo.

She loved to sew and cook, and was well known for her homemade noodles and fried fish.

Survivors include her husband, Donald of Riverside; a son, J. Dene Rath and wife, Marsha, of Riverside; two grandchildren, Gena Rath Vos and husband, Erik, of Ely and Aaron Rath of Riverside; a brother, Clayton Wingler and wife, Joyce, of Riverside; four sisters, Lura Sutton of Dayton, Ohio, Jean Kopf of Iowa City, Vaida Streb of Riverside, and Aletha Duder and husband, Donald, of Riverside.

Thanks for your response. Rose and Matt Rath had 15 children, 14 who lived well into adulthood, yet the history before they crossed the pond is very mimimal, especially for Matthias. I have many people in my tree from Wuerttemberg, Germany, but Matthias Rath was definitely from Luxembourg. Of course, at different times in history, Luxembourg was part of France or Germany.

I have four (4) Matthias Rath's in my family tree, and all were born in Pfalzgrafenweiler, Wuerttemberg, Germany between 1755 and 1880. I don't show any married to a Marie or Rose (Rosalie) Schmit (or Schmiedt, the common spelling at the time). I know that some of the Rath's did migrate to Alberta and Saskatchewan, but I can find none of my ancestors from Luxembourg. I don't know where you might look for further information, but I'll keep my eye out for you.

My Raths were from Luxenbourg and eventually landed in Grand Forks, North Dakota. In 1906 they migrated and homesteaded in St. Peter's Colony in Saskatchewan. My great grandparents were Matthias Rath(1961-1933)and Marie Rosalie "Rose" Schmit Rath (1868-1957)who was actually born in Paris, France. Rose's family were royalty who escaped to Paris during the Prussian War. Rose's maternal grandfather was the Baron Guillaume deVedelstaedt. I have not been able to find Matt or Rose's siblings. Any ideas?

Ida M. Rath, 68, Karen Drive, Died this morning at the Bethesda Care Center.

Services are at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Don Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Rath was born May 18, 1918 in Muscatine County, a daughter of Charles and Nellie Robinson Alteneder. She had resided here her entire life. On July 10, 1946 she married Francis Leo Rath in Muscatine. She had retired from Thatcher Plastic after 29 years of employment.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Lee Rath, Muscatine; and William Charles Jones, Bettendorf; two daughters, Carol Ann Broberg, Spring Valley, Calif; and Mrs. Merle (Judith) Fredrick, Houston Texas; 11 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Hattie Berry and Louise Berry both of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, and a daughter in infancy.
Note I'm no relation and I went to school with Carol Ann Rath and I would like any info on Carol. I would like her obit.

Francis Lee Rath, 73, died this morning at Muscatine General Hospital. burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

He was the son of Theodore and Anna Devork Rath, he was born July 10,1911 in Iowa City. He lived in Muscatine most of his life.

He married Ida Alteneder July 10, 1946, in Muscatine. He was a Army veteran, having served during War II. He retired from Thatcher in 1972 after working there 23 years.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Robert of Muscatine and William Jones of Bettendorf, two daughters, Carol Ann of California and Mrs. Merle (Judith) Friedrick of Houston Texas; 11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two brothers, Donald of Riverside and Harold of Wellman; and one sister, Mrs. Pearl Runnelhart of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one daughter.

Fred RATH eloped with Elizabeth Jane "Lizzie" SMITH (born JAN 16, 1882 Marshal Co., IL) on SEP 15, 1900 near Eldorado, Nebraska. I don't know if they ever had any children. They lived in Arnold, Custer Co., NE in 1935 and in Los Angeles, CA in 1937. I believe she had died before 1974 but I have no death or burial information for either one of them. Would like to know. I have a photo of them, they are distant relatives.

Jemima Rath was a sister to my gggrandmother esther shaw. Their maiden name was Hall. I was told Jemima first lived in Elizabethtown Ontario north of Brockville. There are some other Hall's there. There was a Rath reunion in Springbank Park in London starting in 1929. I thought they left Ireland rather early, in the 1830's. I looking for Hall relatives.

Hi Tracy, It's great to find another Rath cousin!!!. Emma Rath was born August 1879 and married Oliver Inman. Her parents were Gottfried "Fred" Rath and Johanna Loeb. And she had a sister Anna Rath, and brothers Gottfried Christian Rath, Frank and George Rath. I don't have exact marriage, birth or death dates on her just yet. But I have a ton of stuff on the Rath family. Emma's father and my great great grandmother Anne Marie Rath were brother and sister. I've never been able to find much on Oliver Inman and I've been thinking he must be in the census records under another name or a mis-spelled name. I have to work the next two nights, but when I get off on Wednesday morning, I'll email you and give you more specifics. The Rath's were a very big family. I have a cousin that I've been working closely with on our Rath family and together, he and I have found quite a bit of information on them. And I'd love to know more about Oliver Inman and his family too. How many children did Emma and Oliver have? because I've never been able to figure it out. I have the full subscription to Ancestry.com and it's pretty big help in finding things; but sometimes it helps to find family members that know more. I wish I could tell you more about the Inman side; but unfortunately, I don't know much about them. But the Rath side...I have lots of information. Henry RATH: farmer, born Ireland, Church of England, age: 60 years, married, lives in one-story log house Map 1863 Ramsay, Lot 20 Concession 4 (Born 1801;

Mrs Ellen Ward Rath, born Ireland, Church of England, age 56 years married (Born 1805), Father and Mother of Henry Rath, born Ireland, Church of England, age 20 years, (Born 1841).

John James, farmer, born Ireland, Non-Conformist Methodist, age 70 years, lives in one-story log house, one family Lot 16W Concession 1 (Born 1791);

Amelia James, born Ireland, Church of England, age 66 years married (Born 1795), Father and Mother of Amelia James born Canada West, Church of England, age 18 years (Born 1843).

Henry Rath and Amelia James were married in 1862. To this union 12 children were born:

Mr Rath was a pioneer of Dakota Territory, Martin Twp, Walsh County. He emigrated to the United States in July 1879 landing at the Port of Duluth. He made his way to Grand Forks and claimed land, west of that city. While away working on the railroad he lost his claim. Whent he railway was completed to Grafton, he called for his family to fra Canada (in 1882) and they homesteaded on the SW 1/4 Section 1-158-52 in Dakota Territory containing 160 acres.

Mr Rath served on the School Board for many years.

During a severe blizzard the school children were caught at the school house and the Raths' eldest son, Joseph Henry, made his way to the school, staying with the children until the blizzard subsided. This same Joseph later had his thumb pulled off and a tendon in his hand pulled out while feeding a horse. He lost so much weight and fell to ill health which caused his death in July 1886 at age 21 years.

Amelia Elizabeth died in 1912 and Henry died in 1921.

Hello, this is interesting. My grandmother's maiden name was Rath. They originally came down from Clogherhead in Counth Louth to Balbriggan, Co Dublin. When I researched the name, it appears that there were Raths in both Louth, Balbriggan (who came down from Louth) and Wexford. Families in Louth, Balbriggan were Catholic and those in Wexford, Church of Ireland.

I was very glad to see your posting. I am related to Henry Christian Rath Sr. All the names you gave me matched. I didn't have the names August or Johanna I knew there was another boy and girl I was missing from that family. I have Henry, Henrietta Lena and Emma all childern of Wilhelm and Dorothea Rath.
I would really like to share photos and information with you. I have a lot of the Rath Family photos from my grandfather and great anuts and uncles.

My great grandparents are John & Lena (Rath) Byers. I am the granddaughter of their daughter, Hanna (Byers) Petersen. Lena was the daughter of Wilhelm and Dorothea (Hopp) Rath. Her siblings were Henrietta (Rath) Ruess, Henry, August, Johanna (Rath) Will. There was another daughter, but I don't know her first name. All I know was that her married name was Scharfenberg. This may be too late for you, but my Great Grandfathers was Christian Rath who immigrated to North Dakota in 1906. I have some information on the North Dakota Rath's from that line. Christian was born about 1849 and died in 1943 in Kulm, North Dakota.

Wife is Kunigunda (nee Schenk) Zapf Rath b. 1856 in Knetzgau, Germany.

Children are Joseph b. 1889, Margaret Rath Kohl b. 1890; Justina Rath Jepson b. 1892; and Mary Rath Graff b. 1898.

Hello!

I'm looking for info about my ggg-grandma, Johanna Rath. She was born about 1806, supposedly in County Wexford, the daughter of a 'wealthy landowner.' She married the tenant farmer, Daniel Kehoe and was, of course, disowned.

They came to America Jan-Feb 1851 on a ship that I can't read (Bargile Brothers?) from a town that makes no sense (I can't find a Medford, England or Ireland?) to Savannah, Georgia, with 8 of their 9 children.

I can't seem to find any existance of her family before she was married.

Wow - to get a response that quickly! Thanks for the information, I have passed it on to my mom. Emma and Oliver only had one child, Curtis Rath Inman, born July 23 (I think) 1910, in Payette, Idaho. From what we know, she died not long after (not long can be a few months or a few years). Oliver remarried after awhile, but soon enough that my grandpa Curt never knew GG Oliver's wife Jenny was his step-mom until he was much, much older. As my mother said, "We just didn't talk about this stuff". I have a pocket watch with some photos. If I get a chance, I'll scan them in and try to get them to you. I'm not sure who they are - but the watch has Emma's name on it, and a date. I'll look it over, and let you know.

DoD Identifies Army Casualties

The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died Jan. 8 in Maywand, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when their dismounted patrol was hit by an improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.
