According to grandson, Leon Ratner, Joseph joined the Russian Army when he was only 14, claiming to be older than he actually was. He served in the Music Corp, as he had a beautiful singing voice. At some point, when stationed in Siberia, he was suspected of being a spy. A senior officer took him to a "drinking house" and plied him with vodka. Joseph related to Leon that he knew what was going on and acted to protect himself. Having a long beard and wearing a great coat and boots, Joseph let the vodka flow through his beard, down his coat and into his boots. After completing his military service Joseph emigrated from Belarus. He moved first to London, Endland, where a marriage was arranged through a shatchan. Sophie, Joseph's wife, her two sisters and their husbands then emigrated South Africa. Around 1905 Joseph and his sisters-in-law (and families) emigrated to Sidney, Australia. Around 1908 Joseph established a cabinet making business.

Known as Chaim or Hyman to some and as Harry to others. Lived in for many years in Syracuse, NY, then moved toManhattan's Lower East Side, NY. Nine of Chaikel's ten children were born in Syracuse. Ruth was born in NYC. After moving to NYC, the family lived in a 5th floor cold water walk-up.

Was known as a tall, big statured man. Well built. Carried himself with dignity, was very knowledgeable. Lived to be 83 or 84, according to his daughter, Ruth.

Had ten children, 6 girls and 4 boys. Three of the four boys died as young children. One child's name was Sam, he died around the turn of the century. Two of the children who died, died as a result of the 1917-1918 flu epidemic.

The family name change from Bublatzky to Ratner is a bit of a mystery. Family lore has it that when Eli was enroute to this country he "lost" his passport and "found" someone else's bearing the name Ratner.

Another story has it that Eli had trouble getting a passport. In turn he purchased a passport (bearing the name Ratner) on the black market. This would seem to make sense, however, his brothers emigrated to the US before Eli, and they already had the name of Rotner.

According to Harold Ratner, son of George, son of Eli, (as told by Eli) when Chaikel came to this country he did not have a passport or birth certificate. He, like many other Russian immigrants took the name Ratner. In Yiddish "ratovah" means "to save"; "ratona" means "one who saves". Chaikel wrote back to his brothers and told them to use the name "ratona". Anglicized, this became Ratner and Rotner. This story makes the most sense. Uncle Dave Ratner relates that Eli had cousins in the States prior to Eli and his brothers coming over, the cousins had changed their name from Bublatzky to Rasky.

Eli, according to Harold Ratner, was a "tough, miserable, guy". So tough in fact, on Passover he would hide the affikomen in a locked draw. Harold emphasized several times just how tough he was. He was described as being about 5'7", and balding. Pictures reveal that Eli looked exactly like Cary Ratner.

Dave Ratner described Eli as being not very social, somewhat narrow on his outlook. He had no formal education. At age 12 he became a carpenters apprentice, and began to roam the countryside for work. He worked his entire life as a carpenter.

Dave Ratner describes Dora as a sweet, loving person; very simple, with no formal education. As a young child she was abandoned by her mother (father presumably dead), who had eloped with someone. Dora was then taken in by another family, who treated her like a servant. A marriage was arranged for her. She married Eli and raised his three children. She didn't want to be known as a step-mother and raised all of the children lovingly.
