I traced this all to the Ukraine and Mennonites. None of which were in the family book. Have you found out anything else?
Lori

Wow, Aunt Nancy! Google is an amazing thing... I can't believe all the Wannow connections there are. I searched earlier and it appears that there are less than a hundred of us worldwide. Do you know if any of our camp settled in Cottonwood, MN? There seems to have been a John Wannow there around the turn of the century.

Kt.

Hi Drew
thanks for all those infos concerning the American Kiewnings. Kiewning could be written in Eastprussia as Kiewning Kievning – Kiewening Kievening (Kievenick, Kiwenicc, Kiwenik, Kivenik, Kiewnik)There are furthermore polish and russion translations and writings. So far I found many more names in Canada, England and New Jersey. I found the name Kiewning in surviving archives and lists of churches in following places: Königsberg (Kalingrad), Heiligenwalde, Gross Legitten, Arnau, Kaimen, Schaaken, Rohgahnen, Marienburg, Gumbinnen etc. Kiewning you will find all over Eastprussia.
Many churches and archives have been destroyed by the russians north of the river pregel especially. And it will take decades to recover some informations. There was a very interesting Person: Hans Kiewning - he was a so called Geheimarchivar in Westgermany - Detmold.
Hans Kiewning
geboren 20.08.1864 in Königsberg
gestorben 13.07.1939 in Bad Reichenhall (Westgermany)
1899-1933. Archivar in Detmold.
It was his job to find family informations in archives. I still try fo find his children. He should have researched his past? Do I understand you right, that your tree of Kiewnings lived formerly in Hannover - Emil Albert Richard Kiewning and his son Ernest August Kiewning? Do you know that there is still a small familiy living in and around Hannover? What do you know about the 4 men (Arthur, Willi, Arthur jun., Walter) who came by ship 1925 from Hamburg to New Jersey?
Kelly! How wonderful to find another family connection! Even though Evangeline was married to my great-uncle, so we're only related through marriage, it's great to find new threads to one's genealogical tapestry!

Aunt Vannie was a woman ahead of her time - after Uncle Albert passed away, she ran the business until she was well into her late 80s and then sold it, but still kept an eye on what the new owners were doing with it! She was very independent and lived on her own until the day she died. Growing up, my dad used to spend his summers at the wholesale greenhouse working with his aunt and uncle - told us that's how he got so strong, from lifting the flats of plants and hauling bark and trees around!

I haven't had much chance to go through the boxes of pictures from my folks yet, but I know I also have lots of pictures of Vannie and Albert, Ruth and Norman as well, that I'd be more than happy to share with you, too. I'll send you an email so we can keep in touch!

Warmest personal regards,

Nancy

Hello Nancy [and Drew]!

A google search brought me to your postings about the Wannows of Kansas. Evangeline Seeley Wannow was the daughter of Charlotte Elizabeth (Libby) Marshall Seeley, born in Pennsylvania, and my grandfather's aunt. She and her family moved to Kansas. I have some photos of Evangeline when she came back to PA in 1921 to visit her elderly Grandmother Marshall. And I would love to know some of those stories about Evangeline--unfortunately, I never knew her, although her daughter Ruth and I corresponded some before Ruth's death. I'm happy to share any (sacnt) information I have about the Wannows and Seeleys. My name is Kelly Marshall and my email address is marshallfamily@zoominternet.net.

Wow, such great information! Thanks so much. My family will be very excited to hear the news. :-)

Was your grandfather (JFW Wannow III) born in 1905? Was JFW Wannow V born in 1933? Did Cleda Mae Stone marry JFW Wannow III in 1947 and divorce in the 1953 area? If the above questions are indeed answered "yes," then my grandmother Cleda Mae Stone would have probably had some contact with your father JFW Wanow (as she would have been three years older than him and his step-mother. Yikes!).

Does your research show your grandfather marrying someone named Elizabeth before Claudia Hitt? Doris Bega went to school with this "Elizabeth." I guess that would make Cleda Mae Stone his third wife. Doris also remembers visiting Elizabeth in 1956 (about 2 years after marrying Gunther).

I've been told that Evangeline/Vannie's name was Eseeley or Eseely. Could this have been another nickname?

Here's a little more Kiewning information...

Albert Kiewning married someone named Albine (not sure if this is a last name or first name, lived 1849-1926) and had Emil Albert Richard Kiewning. Emil A R Kiewning then married Katherine/Katherina Heckman/Heckmann (daughter of August Heckman/Heckmann & Charlotte nee Rentel). Emil & Kathe adopted Ernst August "Kiewning." We had no idea who his "real" parents were. The problem in our genealogy research has been lack of siblings. It's a very sparse tree and that's why we're so excited to branch in with the Wannows because we're almost at a dead-end on the Kiewning side.

Ernst August Kiewning, of course, married Liesbeth Anna Bremmert to have Richard, Gunther, & Roswitha. Liesbeth's mother's name was Anna Habicht (1878-1955) and we have no idea what happened to her husband Eugen Bremmert (born 1879), except that he died fairly young. Anna Habicht's mother was named Maria and her father was named Gustav Habicht. Anna Habicht had gangrene, spent time in Halstead Hospital, had one of her legs amputated, and died after the whole ordeal.

Do you have any Sakowski family members in your tree?

My family would love to meet you next time you guys are in town! We'll definitely have to set something up. :-)

Warmest,
Drew

Drew,

Thanks for your wonderful reply and confirmation about our families...yes, I'd forgotten about Roswitha...thought there was one more name!

My great-grandfather, William Wannow, settled in Yutan, Nebraska. He married Annamarie (nee Riedel), of Hannover, Germany, which is where I believe the Kiewning connection comes in. William & Annamarie had 4 children: Albert (A.J.), John F.W. III, Carl H., and Elizabeth A. (married name Wheeler).

John F.W. (Jack) Wannow III was my grandfather; he died in 1959. He was married and divorced several times that I am aware of. His second? wife was my grandmother, Claudia (nee Hitt). They had 2 children: Annamarie (married Paul A. Bliss) and John F.W. Wannow IV. My grandfather was married to his fourth or fifth wife when he died...she was the stepgrandmother I knew/grew up with, Edith C. Wannow (nee Carlson).

My aunt Annamarie divorced Paul Bliss in the mid 1960s, and she died in 1976, a year after my grandmother. They had 4 children: Paul G. (married Joni Moelling), Cynthia L. (married Wayne Meyer), Jack C. and Lori A.; all of them except Lori still live in Wichita.

A.J. Wannow & Evangeline (Vannie) ran Ark Valley Wholesale Floral Company on North Arkansas Street for many, many years. My great aunt Vannie died at the age of 101 or 102...she was a character! They had 2 children: Norman and Ruth (married Paul Berry, lived in Cheney KS). Norman and Ruth are both now deceased. Norman had a son, but I don't know the name or where he lives. Ruth had 3 children, one of the sons is deceased if I remember right. Her daughter, Patty, lives in Oklahoma. I think the other son lives in Cheney still.

Carl & Lorene Wannow ran Wannow Flowers on East Central at Grove. They sold the business back in the late 70s, but the owners kept the name for a long time. I don't think the business is there any more, though. They had 4 daughters: Jean & Joyce (twins), Wanda Lea and Garnett Ann.
Jean (married Bud Athey); Joyce (married Wayne Sidebottom); Wanda Lea (married Delbert Jackson-deceased); and Garnett Ann (married Paul [last name I can't remember right now]).

Elizabeth (married [can't remember name] Wheeler) lived in Omaha all her life and never had any children. She lived to be nearly 100 also.

I have wanted to get in touch with my dad's cousin Garnett Ann - her husband has been working on some Wannow geneaology also. I learned this from one of her sisters a couple of years ago when I was taking care of my mom before she passed away (2004). My father died in January 2007.

I look forward to keeping in touch - we do get back to Wichita occasionally since we have a few family members still there. My husband has a brother, a niece, and some cousins still there. Now I can add some more cousins!

Would love to arrange to meet you on our next trip, if possible!

Best regards,

Nancy

Nancy,

I was afraid that you wouldn't get my message since you posted yours so long ago but I'm so glad to be in connection!

Those names are correct, but you should also add Roswitha Ilona Kiewning long married to Earl Louis Yarmer. They live in Austin, TX & have two children: Cynthia Renee Yarmer & Kristin Yarmer. Cynthia (Cindy) married Butch Bailey and has a beautiful 5 year old daughter named London.

We uncovered a family secret this week! Richard Kiewning's wife (Cleda Mae Stone, my grandmother), was first married to John Winnow, so we believe! They divorced and Cleda married Richard, though they have been divorced for many years. Cleda remarried Don Lego of Pennsylvania and still lives in Wichita. Richard remarried Marva Jean (Jeannie) Mohney and lived in Blue Eye, Missouri for the last 19 years. I'm sorry to report that my grandfather, Richard Kiewning, passed away on September 22, 2008 in Los Alamos, NM. He was on his way to California for vacation. You can find several obituaries online.

Also, Gunther Ernst Kiewning & Doris Jean Bega divorced many years ago. Were you aware they had children? Robert G. Kiewning was born in 1959, married Nancy Lea Wilson, had Amber Kiewning in 1980, and have since divorced. Gunther & Doris also had Patricia Kiewning, now married to Tom Lee Burnell. They have no children.

Anyway, I've got loads of information & pictures about us in Wichita but we don't even know how you are cousins -- my great grandmother, Liesbeth Anna Bremmert(Brennert?) simply wrote so on the back of a few photographs. What information can you provide about how we are actually cousins?

I'm excited!
Drew Tedlock

My father's cousins are the Kiewnings that lived in Wichita KS, which is where I was born and raised.

These are the cousins:
Gunter (wife Doris) Kiewning
Richard (wife's name I cannot remember) Kiewning
Elizabeta (?) Kiewning (mother to Gunter & Richard)

All emigrated to US from Germany after WWII.

I would certainly enjoy the pictures!
Curt, not sure if there is any connection, but there is certainly some interesting common names here. My great grandfather was August Stroede, and his father was Carl. August immigrated in 1882 via Philadelphia, last known residence Schwentz, Pommerania. Two of his sons were Arthur Carl William Stroede (b. 1887) and Edwin Carl Wilhelm Stroede (b. 1889). They also had another son named John, my grandfather. In 1905, they lived in the 10th Ward, Milwaukee.
So August, John, Carl, Wilhelm, Schwentz...might be a relationship of some kind. If your or anyone has more info, I would greatly appreciate hearing it. Thanks

Geoff,
Have you ever reviewed the Waldheim remembers the Past? It was published in the 80's and there are many many pages regarding the Ratzlaff family. What caught my eye when I was reading the post is the Tobias and Eva (Buller) Ratzlaff. There is a picture of them together in front of a house.
From what I understand reading the book Tobias was born on 12/23/1865 in Heinrichsdorf near Berdichev in the province of Volhynia, Russia. His parents were Abraham and Anna (Teske) Ratzlaff. It talks more of Eva. Let me know if you like me to send you some of the info in the book. I am helping my Grandmothers sister with some Buller research in Waldheim. There is much info on the Ratzlaff family. Including about him as a child.

Interesting to say the least.
Jennifer

Have District Court, Cottonwood County, MN papers stating that John H Ratzlaff was born in Russia 1863; he emigigrated to the US and landed at port of New York in August 1874.
Also have copy of marriage certificate to "Bertie" Hendrickson and copy of his "obit". Obit says that he was survived by a sister Mary. 1880 Census for Mt Lake, Cottonwood Co., MN shows an Anna Ratzlaff, age 46, (was either widowed or divorced,) with daugher Mary, age 20, and son Johann, age 17. All were born in Russia. Census also shows second husband Jacob, age 45. Last name I cannot be sure of. Looks like Leavy.

Looking for additional information on this family. Who was Anna's first husband? Which Ratzlaff? Where in Russia were they born? Also what is correct name of second husband?
John H.

My wife is looking for a connection to the Ratzlaff linage. Her grandmother was Sophia May Ratzlaff and she married James Wilson Carothers. Sohpia came from the Dakotas or Kansas. She and James lived in Millport, AL where both are buried. They had two girls, Kathereen (died as an infant) and Daisy Lee. Do your records show any information on these people?

Ratzlaff/Ratzloff

Looking for any information concerning Ferdinan Ratzloff/Ratzlaff and his will Liddie. In the 1880 Iowa census, Ferdinan was listed as 36 and from Germany. Liddie was 30 and from Ohio. Hoping they had two daughters named Sopha or Sophia and Joan. Sopha is my wife's grandmother and our records show she spelled her name Ratzlaff. She married a Carothers and lived in Millport, AL. We are hoping Ferdinan and Liddie are her parents, but do not have enough information at this time to confirm this theory. Any help will be apprecited.
