Thank you so much for the information. I haven't gotten to the Cemetery yet. The knee surgery did not go well, and I'm unable to walk distances. But I certainly would like to go someday. Other family members are there too. Anything you have to pass on would be great. I would really appreciate it.

Diane

Hello,

Sorry it has taken so long to respond, I just found the cemetary information today. This is what I have:

The Rau plot in the Allegheny Cemetary (Pittsburgh, PA) was owned and paid for by Friedrich (Frederick) William Rau. I have two receipts that he signed and a copy of the page showing his plot(s) from the cemetary. His address on the receipt was 4569 Carroll St., Pittsburgh, PA (this isn't far from the cemetary) and the payment dates were in 1893 and 1895.

The following individuals are buried in lot 261. The marker is now gone and I hope to one day purchase one that identifies the Rau family plot. The cemetary personnel can guide you to the plot should you ever have the chance to visit.

Register # Grave # Interments

36008 2 Anna Maria Rau 8/17/1893
52855 1 Frederick (Friedrich) Rau 5/3/1910
38066 3 Freda Elizabeth Rau Bucher 10/3/1895
38107 3 Arthur J. Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can assist in any other way.

Fellow Rau researchers:
Does anyone have any pictures from this Rau line? I am willing to pay for photos, any cost to scan/ship, etc. I am hoping that someone out there with a photo or two will take a minute to help a fellow Rau. My husbands family has none and I am trying to put together a book for my children.
Our line is Charles Francis Rau/Gertrude Weigers, their son, Henry Bernard Rau and his son Stanley

Here is some data on Garnberg:

G A R N B E R G

This basically says (as I understand) it was a small village and in the 18th Century and there was only a small castle, a sheepfold and accommodation for mercenary soldiers. It then goes on about the growth of Garnberg after this time.

"Garnberg
Schloss (Garnberg Castle)
Ort:
74653 Künzelsau-Garnberg
Daten:
erbaut (Date Built): 1688

Quelle(n) (Information from):
Prof. Dr. Hans Christ, Prof. Dr. Hans Kaiber	Württemberg und Hohenzollern, Herrsching 1984"

This specifies the location of the (now privately owned) 'castle'.

I don't know who owned it yet but Garnberg is a tiny place. I can easily imagine our relatives would have interacted or been employed by those there. Also, a Hohenlohe was born in Garnberg 4yrs after our relative so a guess would be they were in the castle.

No images of the place online. I would suspect that it would be a small pad rather than a massive castle, perhaps like a manor. No proof of this yet. Just speculation.

It is not our 'blood name'. Oh it is very complicated!

However, I have the names of the true family names but this group are land-workers.

Martin K has done us proud...

I will get in touch soon.

PAB

It seems curious that Great Aunt Anne used to go on about the Hohenlohes and we have a whole mass of them being born 3km from where Katarina Rau was born.
Might be some connection as family (verbal) history suggests.

However, we should always treat such stories with a modicum of respectful skepticism until proven one way or another.

Hello I am a Rau descendent. My grandfather's grandfather was Freidreich Rau and they lived in the Lawrenceville/Bloomfield area. There is a Rau plot at Allegheny cemetary that Freidreich paid off in the late 1800's. I have a copy of the receipt. We went to visit the grave site, I think there are seven family members buried there. There are no headstones but the cemetary personnel can direct you to the location and tell you who is bured there. I am not certain if any of the family members you inquired about are buried there.

I think my husband has a list of all the Rau family members bured there. If I find them I will post them in a reply. I am interested in any Rau history that you may have and am more than happy to share any information I have.

Cheri Smith (Rau)

That is amazing. had heard of Rendsburg before as Mary or Christine mentioned it. I was unsure what to make of it as it is Northern Germany and the Leibs were Catholic. Most Catholics hail from the South.

It makes it very interesting as when Franz X was born there was a dispute about whether Rendsburg was Denmark or Germany. Germany (Prussia) won...

We can now explore the archives in S-Holstein to find out more...

Do they know if Franz X went back to Germany?

I am still trying to find my folder!

The news of a location is absolutely amazing. This is the biggest breakthrough ever. I have been doing this for years and never got that close. Did it come from their side?

It means that we are off again!

Thank you so much for replying so quickly. Living in the U.S., we have sort of run into a brick wall with finding information about Anna Gertrude and her Dad, Francis Rau. I look forward to finding out from you if there is a connection. By the way, my name is Nancy Henson (Evans).

I know this is going to be a far-fetched supposition, but I am trying to find information on one of my ancesters and I came upon your postings. I am looking for information on an "Anna Gertrude Rau". Her father's name is "Francis Joseph Frank Rau". Anna's grandparents were both born in Prussia. Anna is my great-grandmother. She was born in 1854. Her father, Francis, was born in 1828. Her mother, Mary Ann (Schmidt) was born in 1832. I live in the U.S. I know it's a long shot, but I would be interested to know if there is any connection between the Rau's you seek, and the Rau's I seek. Please let me know if there might be a connection. Thanks.

Hello Nancy, I know that Anna come over from Rensburg pre 1879, which happens to be the year she got married to Franz Xavier Leib in birmingham, they had family there. On the marrige certifacate under witness it has john Rau,which i thought was her dad,but it must be her brother or uncle?.
After Franz and Anna died, one of the children was taken to Amercia by her Auntie, one of annas sisters I have my uncle's cousin who lives in Milton keynes, her mother was told she could not look after any of the children, she was too old.
Does this mean anything to you?
Anna was illegitemate, was thought to be from a well to do family,Her birth father (we have told over the years) was prince Rupert from the house of Houanlou, Germany. But trying to comfirm this as you can imagine is very differcult.
Can you tell me what you know.
Best wishes jeanette

sounds interesting, let me know how you get on. I do know that records from that area at the time were interested in are not recorded on the net, back in the 20s and before records were copyied and then destroyed and are now kept in the towns liberey.
I had a hit on my ancestry tree from some one who might have a rau connection to us, she has Anna Gretrude Rau and Father Francis, can't help but think that we have the name francis in our tree too.I have given info about our back ground, waiting for her to get back to me.
ALso found ww1 records on Henry fredrick and can comfrim that he was at the battle of Jutland, where a british ship sank a german ship with his cousins and uncle on!
Hope at some time to go round to see your mum with uncle chris, you mentioned some time back about your mum having some info that would be useful.

speak soon.
Albert Karl, wife Helen, daughter Bertha in Boston area

I am looking for information about my great great grandparents Albert Karl and Helen Rau. They were German immigrants in the Boston area.

I do not know Helen's maiden name, but do know that she had a sister named Minnie. Helen was born in 1872 and Minnie was born in 1860. I believe they came over as children with there parents. Helen died of cancer in the late 30s in the Boston area.

According to my grandmother's diary, Albert was born in 1875 and died in 1926. He came to the US around 1890. I do not know the names of any of his relatives. He may have had a brother named Richard, as my grandmother mentions someone called "Uncle Dick" who frequently sends the women money in the 30s.

Albert and Helen had 2 daughters. One was my great grandmother Bertha who was born in 1901. She married Clarence Rickard around 1920. She lived in the Boston area, Detroit, and Lafayette, Indiana. The other daughter, Laura, died as a young child.

If anyone can give me any information about this family, I would really appreciate it.

Hi Sheri,

Most of the information I have on the family came from the Calbach Church records at the LDS. The microfilm was VERY hard to read (bad handwriting) and I would like to look at it again some day. I have the info posted on the Wikert Family Tree at Ancestry. If you need access, write me on regular e-mail at 150atf@salsgiver.com. I can give you access as a guest. I will look at my file and get back to you on anything not posted. It will be a while before I can visit Allegheny Cemetery - I am recovering from knee surgery and can't walk around yet - wait till Spring. If you have the names, I would really appreciate them.

Diane

It is likely that the Parish recorded etc would need to be consulted.

If we can identify Anna, Catherine and their Father John (Johann?..as Idenified in Marriage Certs) we may get somewhere.

We also have:
Household:

John RAU Visitor (Head) M Male 31 (B S), Germany Farmer
Sophie RAU Visitor Wife M Female 26 (B S), Germany Farmer Wife
Henry RAU Visitor Son U Male 4 (B S), Germany
Honey RAU Visitor Daughter U Female 6 m Kensington, Middlesex, England

From the 1881 Census (However the name given as 'Ran' but my view is this is a transcription error).
Garnberg/Künzelsau Rau or Rauh

I have discovered that some of my Rauh/Rau ancesters came from Garnberg near Künzelsau.

In particular: Catherine Rau (or Rauh) born around 1872. She had a sister called Anna and a father called John (Johann?) who was a Corn merchant.

Anyone out there know of this family?

Ich suche familie Rauh (oder Rau). Catharina Rau war in Garnberg geboren (~1872).

It means that if there is any mileage in the royalty story then they are in the right place as the local area was House of Hohenloe land.

Hello,

My uncle Frank Walls is searching for an old friend from his Air Force days. Ronnie Rau would be around age 75 now, was from Ohio, and at one time worked for Boeing in Renton, WA.

If anyone knows this person, and they would like to re-connect with Frank, please let me know.

Thank you.
Patricia
