Following is a transcription of part of a letter dated January 6, 1939 which details some of the RAWLEY - STORY - SUMMERS Guilford County, NC ancestry and how these families interrelate. The letter was written January 6, 1939, by the Reverend James Cameron Story of Marion, North Carolina to Miss Mattie Story of Owensboro, Kentucky. According to his letter, Miss Story was the granddaughter of Cameron Story and Polly Ann Summers, daughter of John and Polly (Osborne) Summers.

Rev. James Cameron Story was the son of William Riley and Isabella Jane (Summers) Story. He was ordained to the ministry in 1902. He founded and was pastor of the Presbyterian church at Marion, N. C. for twenty-five years. [From "History of Bethel Presbyterian Church, McLeansville, NC;" written by Jerry S. Nix; undated; page 30]

Isabella Jane Summers was the daughter of John and Polly (Osborne) Summers, and sister of Polly Ann Summers. Many of the birth/baptisms of the 17 children of John Summers are documented in the Friedens Lutheran records.

My copy of this transcription was provided Ianthia Gerringer LaMarr, October 2000. Her source was Jerry Nix, a Guilford RAWLEY/STORY/SUMMERS descendant.

Gentlemen:

Here is a copy of the letter written January 6, 1939, by the Reverend James
Cameron Story to Miss Mattie Story of Owensboro, Kentucky.

RAWLEY - STORY - SUMMERS

The Story Ancestry. The Story family is a very ancient family, dating back to the
Tenth Century. This famly of Storys came to America in the time of the Pilgrims,
also in Wm. Penn's day. Our immediate family came from the Scottish borders close
to Northumberland County, north England. James Story came to America before the
Revolutionary War, and tradition makes him a soldier of that war. His wife's name
was Elizabeth Sain. He came from Southeast Virginia into Guildford Co. so tradition
has it. I do not know where he is buried.

James Story and Elizabeth Sain had the following children:

Caleb Story, born 1788, and died September, 1867. He moved to Wabash, Indiana,
about 1818. He raised a large family. Most of the grandchildren live in that city or
nearby. I visited them about five years ago. Most all of them are well to do and
influential, well educated.

William Story, my grandfather and your great grandfather, was born December 18, 1783,
and died 1860. He married Nancy Rawley; see the RAWLEY ancestry. He lived and died
in Guildford Co., N. C. , and is buried in Bethel Cemetery. He had the following children
Cameron, Elizabeth, Nicey and William Riley, who is my father and your great uncle.

My father reared a large family. Most of them lived and died, that is all who have
passed on, near Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Children of William Riley Story and his wife, Isabella Jane Summers:

An infant died at birth
Francis Abigail - born April 8, 1850
William RAWLEY - August 14, 1852
Mary Isabella - August 5, 1854
Donalson - April 1, 1856
Cyrus Dalton - May 22, 1858 - living
Petree Riley - December 9, 1861 - living
Elizabeth Jane - January 16, 1863
Martha Adeline - June 16, 1865 - living
James Cameron - September 17, 1868 - living
Bruce Washington - April 18, 1870

The RAWLEY Ancestry.

John RAWLEY came from Maryland and settle in Guildford Co., N. C. about 1790. He
or his father came from Exeter, England, about 1749. John RAWLEY bought several
tracts of land near the city now known as Greensboro. John RAWLEY and his brother,
or near relative, known as Elisha RAWLEY also settled in Guildford. Little is
known of him or his family. His name appears as a witness in legal papers.

John RAWLEY had two children: James RAWLEY and Nancy RAWLEY, he might have had
others not known though. Nancy RAWLEY was born November 22, 1786; about 1810 she
married William Story. She died 1841. She had the following children:

Cameron Story - born August 4, 1812 - (He is your grandfather.)
Elizabeth Story - November 21, 1814 - (never married)
Nicey Story - November 29, 1818 - (married James Fleming, moved to Carroll Co., Virginia)

William Riley Story - August 7 1820 - (He is my father.)

Nancy RAWLEY Story joined Bethel Presbyterian Church June 6, 1824. She and her
husband are buried in the church cemetery, as well as most of the kin.

James RAWLEY moved to Kentucky about 1832, settled near a little river town, now
called Hendersonville. He corresponded with my father many years, I have some
of his correspondence. I wish you would endeavor to locate his descendants.

The RAWLEY family in Guilford County was not very prolific, and if there is any
one of this immediate family now living in the county I do not know them.

The Summers Ancestry.

The Summers family came from te Palatinate in the Rhine Valley, Germany. They
first settled in Pennsylvania and then moved to Guilford County, No. Carolina, about
1743. They settled on Reedy Fork Creek and in the surrounding country. They were
very prolific, rearing large families. They were generally industrious, frugal,
thrifty, owning large bodies of land. Many of them were slave holders. Their descend-
ents are in that section, influential and well to do.

John Summers settled in the vicinity of Bethel Church and bought large tracts of land
in the year 1816. I do not know his father's name.

He first married a Miss Ross, so I learn, later, after her death, he marrried
Polly Osborne of Guilford Co., N. C. She was born November 10, 1797. Married
John Summers April 24, 1813. Died January 1, 1860. They had the following:

Elizabeth - born 1802 - by first wife
Catherine - 1804 (by 1st wife)
William - 1807 (by 1st wife)
Martin - 1808 (by 1st wife)
Nancey - 1811 ((by 1st wife)
Louize - 1814 by second wife
John - 1816 ( by 2nd wife)
Drucelear - 1818 ( by 2nd wife)
Polly Ann - 1821 ( by 2nd wife) (Your grandmother)
Marguerite - 1823 ( by 2nd wife)

Patsy - 1827 ( by 2nd wife)
Isabella Jane - 1829 ( by 2nd wife) (My mother)
Susan Emily - 1833 ( by 2nd wife)
Thankful Abigail - 1834 ( by 2nd wife)
George Washington - 1835 ( by 2nd wife)(Died of wounds received in battle.)

Cameron Story married Polly Ann Summers and moved to Kentucky. My father
married Isabella Jane Summers. About 1858 he moved to Kentucky near his brother.
About 1859 he returned to North Carolina. John Summers and all his family were
members of the Friedens Lutheran Church near Gibsonville, N.C. and he and most of his
family lie in the church cemetery.
