Edward Rawson line

My name is Heather Rawson and I am trying to find information on the generations following Edward the second and preceding David(Sec of Mass line of genealogy) I have a family tree that was given to me but I do not know how to contact the person that made it, so I do not know if it is accurate. What I have says Christopher (1519), Richard(1536), Edward(1555), David(1587), Edward (Secretary of Mass. Bay Colony)(1615), William(1651), Captain William(1682), William(1711), Edward(1744), Leonard(1771), Edward(1811), John Spalding(1841), Elson(1873), Elson(1918) I have found public records that give the lineage from Christopher down to the second Edward, but nothing after, I don't know how the person that made the family tree I have connected the second Edward to my grandfather and father. If any one has any ideas where I could find this info I would greatly appreciate the help, I feel like I've hit a wall
and do not know where else to look, my family really has no records of anything.

Re: Rebecca Rawson 1600's (and the Rawson - Flint connection)

I came upon your question while surfing the internet. Edward Rawson Flint, M.D., Ph.D., and Maude Adelaide Hatch were my great-grandparents (the parents of my maternal grandmother Esther Adelaide Flint. Indeed, the Rawson line connects through Grandmother Maude's ancestry, as do many of the Mayflower passengers (including Mullins, Alden, Fletcher, and others) of Plymouth Colony; Edward Rawson came later to the larger and more powerful Massachusetts Bay Colony, but he was still a part of what the Puritans rather grandiosly called their "Great Migration."

Though your question concerns the Rawsons (a notable family in many parts of the Atlantic World), your Flint ancestors are also noteworthy. Dr. Edward R. Flint worked with Dr. William Gorgas to successfully eradicate yellow fever during the construction of the Panama Canal (Gorgas and Dr. Walter Reed discovered the source of the disease while stationed in Cuba during the Spanish American War). Flint took degrees at universities in the U.S. and in Germany, and had a brilliant career in medicine, chemistry, and herpetology, and as a highly popular university professor during the glory days of higher education in the United States (applied business models are destroying it today). Flint Hall (renamed Keene-Flint Hall around 2004) at the University of Florida at Gainesville is named in his honor.

Edward's father Charles Louis Flint was a well-published author of many mid-19th-century books on American progress and agriculture. He was the Secretary of Agriculture for the State of Massachusetts when the President Lincoln signed the Morill Land-Grant College Act into law in 1862. Thus (as Mass. Ag. Secretary), C. L. Flint carried out the founding of Massachusetts Agricultural College (now known as the University of Massachusetts at Amherst) and served on the founding board of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Both institutions successfully innovated in areas of mechanized production during the Civil War when a shortage of laborers prevailed. Both institutions (like others in the Union) thus helped to usher in the post-Civil War industrial revolution. Flint Hall at U. Mass. Amherst is named for Charles Louis Flint. He also left an endowment for the creation of the Flint Public Library in Middleton, Massachusetts.

I hope this bit of family trivia is useful. I doubt if I will cross this way again; I have considerable difficulty logging in to the system here.

Best Regards,

Michael K. Ward, Ph.D.
Lecturer, Department of History
California State University, Northridge
michael.ward@csun.edu
Hello,
I am a direct descendent of Richard Rawson and have seen his gravesite along with his wife's, Elizabeth, and son, William. My Father, Gary Rawson, was born in Bonne Terre Missouri in 1942, and my family visited the area annually as a child. Family tradition has Richard as a blacksmith in England. I have a lot of info on the Rawson's from Richard thru today, but have nothing regarding his english origination. I once found a listing of naturalized citizens at our local library which identified a Richard Rawson as being naturalized in either 1862 or 1864 (can't remember exact year) in Pennsylvania, which is consistent with the info you listed. I would be interested in any info you may have regarding Richard's history in England.

Thank you,
Stephen Rawson
Lexington, SC

Family tradition is correct that Richard became a blacksmith in England.

It appears that Richard was born in or around Ripley, Derbyshire, England. In the 1851 UK census, he is listed as a blacksmith's apprentice. I haven't been able to find him in the 1841 UK census (using either a soundex or an exact surname spelling). The closest I have found is William Rawson/Martha Rawson in Pentrich, Derbyshire, with a son William age 10. I don't have a death certificate for our Richard, but suspect that given that his onl son was named William, that his father's name was most likely William.

There are a lot of Rawsons in Derbyshire (still to this day, from what Google shows).

BYU has a copy of "The Rawson Memorial" divided into 4 PDFs. Also Google Books has a PDF copy of the same from the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Rebecca was the daughter of Edward Rawson, Secretary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. She was killed in the Earthquake of 1692 in Port Royal, Jamaica. "The Rawson Memorial" includes 9 generations of family and will hopefully help you to make the connection.

Hello, My name is Wally Clingan. My great uncle was Thomas Clingan son of Jesse, son of James, son of John. My Aunt Viols remembers Thomas as an old man whom her parents warned he to stay out of his way. He had wwhite hair and a big white mustache which he was constantly combing with a fine toothed comb. He lived with my great grandfather, William Warren Clingan during his waning years in Tipp City Ohio. He was married to one Nancy Johnson, who was the daughter of one of his great aunts. They had,I believe 7 or 8 children.

If you would be interested in having it, I have a Word study on my family that goes back to my ggggreat grandfather John Clingan which I will be glad to send to you. My email address is wlc32@woh.rr.com just write and ask for it and give me your e mail address. Also, if you have any Clingan information, I would love to have it. Wally

Hi Kris,

I see this is an old post, so perhaps you may not see this but anyway, Margaret's husband was 'Septimus' (not Septonius, or other varients) James Rawson, born Nov 2 1859 near Toronto, Canada. He became a US resident around 1874, and lived in England from about 1898–1903. His application for a US passport in the 1890's was to visit Russia. From 1920 until his death in 1940, he appears to have lived with Margaret in Shandaken, Ulster, New York. Margaret died in LA in 1964

Rebecca Rawson 1600's (and the Rawson - Flint connection)

Family lore states that (among many others) one of my ancestors was named rebecca Rawson. The story I was told was that she came over to massachusetts with her family (possibly on the Mayflower, or soon after). She was rebellious and had a fairly eventful life (though my father never said much about it in detail, he did mentioned she married or threatened to marry someone considered unsuitable). My father would tell me stpries of my ancestors all the time. he mentioned Rebecca in particular because he wanted to name me after her, but my mother insisted on Victoria. Dad always said I should have been named Rebecca because I was just as rebellious as she was supposed to have been.

Anyway, I know almost nothing concrete about my family history. My paternal grandmother was Dorothy Flint, and the Rawsons were her relations. I am hoping someone may be able to shed some light on who she was as well as (hopefully) at what time period the Rawsons and the Flints became connected.

Also, one of my ancestors is supposed to have been Secretary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony during the settlement period. Is he Rebecca's father or grandfather perhaps? Anyone know his name? I know these probably seem like silly questions, but I'm just starting out with this whole trace your ancestry thing, and most of my relatives are either dead or out of touch so I have few family resources to call on.

Thanks for your help!

Illegitimate son born to a Reynolds / Rause(n)/ Roussin / Rawson/ Rowson/ Rouse, etc. man??

Is anyone aware of an illegitimate son born to a Reynolds / Rause(n)/ Roussin / Rawson/ Rowson/ Rouse, etc. man?? Perhaps that's the track I should take as I've been unable to find my Claudius' paternity in the official records! He was born 6 August 1874 in East St. Louis, St. Clair Co., IL. to Lucinda Isabel Reynolds & unknown.(A 5th cousin who is also an accredited genealogist has been unable to locate him for me as well.) This man has been an extremely tough nut to crack! DNA is my next option, though without an exact surname to present I'm not even sure how successful that might be!

FAULKNER, HAND, REYNOLDS, RAWSON/ROWSON/RAUSE(N)/ROUSE ETC.

Dear Fellow Researchers,

I'm writing to see if we might have any family connections?
My proverbial genealogical dead-end is my paternal grt.grt. grandfather, a man whose surname was Reynolds/Rouse/Rause(n)/Rousen/Rawson/Rowson or something along those lines. His first name is unknown which of course makes him next to impossible to find! Therefore, my grasping at any straws I can find :~)
All I know is that he MAY have been Irish and of a New York banking family, totally unverified, simple family oral history. He MAY or may not have actually married my grt.grt. grandmother, Lucinda Isablle Reynolds who was born in 1854 in Morgan County, Illinois. In any case, they had a child named Claudius (middle name Paul?) who was born in August 1874 in East St. Louis, Illinois. Lucinda had no other children, which is doubly unfortunate as they could have been a possible source of information as well. Lucinda was the daughter of James Madison Reynolds/Runnels and Amelia Hand; her father was Jeremiah Hand who was also one of the earliest settlers of Greene Co., IL (1827).
The end of my knowledge is the death of Mr. "Rowson" circa 1873-1878. The story is that he died in a train accident (probably in St. Louis) while traveling the country with his stable of racing horses. I've searched through many old newspaper articles regarding train accidents and so far have not had any luck. Lucinda remarried to a Thomas Henry Faulkner in 1878 in Sangamon County, Illinois and he subsequently adopted Claudius; erasing the 4 year old's biological surname from our family once & for all.
If you think there might be the slimmest chance that he is from your family tree, I would GREATLY appreciate hearing from you, and I thank you very
much for your time.

Sincerely,
Karen Birk Weatherford
South Carolina
