Robert Andrew RAY, b. 1832, Washington Co., AL; d. 1910, Carmichael, Clarke Co., MS. CSA service in AL 22nd Regt., CSA, under Lt. PRINCE & Col. Abbott GAINES. Robert filed pension application 1902, Clarke Co., MS, in which he stated that before the war, he had been "A Planter", and after the war, he had rented land in AL & MS. His file states that from March of 1864 till the end of the war, he was "in the hospital" [though a prisoner of war.]

Robert A. RAY was the son of Elijah RAY & Nancy MARTIN of
Washington, Clarke and Choctaw Cos., MS, and the apparent
grandson of Sanders RAY of Lunenburg Co., VA?, GA?, and
San Esteban de Tombechbe [Spanish Terr., where Sanders
was recorded in 1797,] and of Andrew P. "Andy" MARTIN & Mary SELLARS of Clarke Co., AL. Robt. m. Susan M. WRIGHT, dau. of Jesse Austin WRIGHT & Elizabeth GUINN [GUIN, GUION, QUINN], and granddau. of James D. WRIGHT & Nancy CLARDY of
SC & Choctaw Co., AL.]

Robert's unit fought at every engagement of the eastern theater, CSA, and he was wounded and captured in
1864. He was a prisoner of war at Camp Morton, IN,
and was exchanged in 1865 at City Pt.. VA. in 1865.
