Hello Etta,

No problem. I will have the copies in the mail to you by Friday.

I am having a hard time locating Joshua Raner. Do you know when or where Joshua Raner was born or died, or is buried?
I assume he died before 1850, leaving Hannah a widow to raise her younger children.

Are the Raner's in the Owasco Rural Cemetery in Onondaga County next door to Owasco, Cayuga Co., NY related to our Joshua Raner?

The online version of the cemetery has a Willie Hall which matches.

I have joined the Ranyner Family Association as well.

Hopefully one day I can locate information on all 11 children (according to Hannah's 1865 census) of Joshua Raner and Hannah Vangilder.

Thank You once again,
Debbie Freeman

freeames at comcast dot net

Hello,

Thank You for your reply. I appreciate it. Yes I believe they are the correct couple. I have my ancestors Nebraska death certificate, and the Nebraska cemetery information, as well as the 1850 census. The 1850 (Wells Hall household, Cortlandville, Cortland Co., NY) census says she was born in Cayuga Co., NY. Her death certificate says Joshua Raner and Hannah Vangilder as her parents, most of her children are born in Niles, Cayuga Co. NY.

I have given Claudia Manchaster my contact information to share, and will probably be mailing what little Raner family information (copies that I have, some of which I have mentioned) to Claudia this week.

Would you like copies of these as well?

At present I do not have a scanner yet. So I am mailing them the old fashion way. US Post Office.

Thanks again, Debbie Freeman

PS - Thank You for sharing the variation of the spelling. I would like to try to locate Joshua in the pre 1850 census.

Sometimes these things are not what they advertise. The company is GenealogyCDs.com The price was $15.00 and it was here within less than a week.It is a PDF file so very easy to look through and print.

Regards, Sharon

Perry descends from Thurston Raynor. I descend from Thurston nephew Edward from his broher Samuel. Thurston came to America with his family; and Edward an orphan as both his parents died. Edward settle in Hempstead area; aka Raynor Neck, Raynor South, Raynortown (now called Freeport) while Thurston settle in Southampton area of Long Island. I am family reseacher for the Raynor Family Association for Edward's lineage; but if I see something on the surname Raynor, I will try to assist. Bob

After trying to find Perry in the 1880 census and his son Benjamin H. I have come to the conclusion they went to North Dak. as you mentioned in your post due to the fact Benjamins daughter was born in 1883 in N. Dak.I am sure by a first marriage.
It does seem they returned. Perry to Clarksville Ne as he was in the 1885 state census. There is a picture of his gravestone in the Bureau Cenetery in Clarks Nebraska. Elcys name is there but not her date of death.
Thought you woould like to check it out.
What relation are you if any to Perry?
Thanks Sharon

I had found a family tree and hoping to verify the information.
I am doing this for a childhood friend who has always gone by the name Gilmore. She has known nothing of this family.
I found Benjamin Hamilton in Princeton Bureau Illinois in 1900 with Ella listed as Ellen,Phebe age 11 amd Bertha age 16. The not named son is Howard her father.
Do you know if Benjamin was married prior to Ella? The ages of the girls suggest he may have been.
Sharon

This Daniel Knowlton, b ca 1750, is unrelated to the Daniel of your post. There are two Daniel Knowltons in this branch of the Knowltons who may have died in 1864, one in April. Did your Daniel die in Memphis, TN? I have a birth for him, 26 June 1836, but no place, and no death date? Let's switch this discussion to the Knowlton message board. You can see data on Rootsweb's Worldconnect:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

I had thought that Stephen Rayonr and Catherine Carpenter were the parents of Harriet. However in all the records from Waukesham Wis Harriet is not listed. Only Martha J and George are listed as their children. Harriet Married Albert Nelson White, who was older than her and the story goes that the family disowned her. If Stephen was a brother this may make more sense. I am interested in finding more John David Raynor information. It seems that she listed her parents as Stephen and Catherine Raynor on her marriage cert. to Andrew Jackson Besst. This was found in his civil war documents.

OK--sounds good. Do we have dates and other information for Lewis and Stephen, to plug them into the genealogy collected by the Long Island branch? It's certainly plausible that they would "inch" their way west, first into eastern New York and then on to some such place as Chautauqua County--though I am struck, in reading the genealogy of the Long Island Raynors, at just how firmly they seemed to stick to that spot.

Side story: I had done a little piecing-together over the years, but mostly on the Godards, my mother's mother's family, and on the Sawdeys, my father's. But I have long had an interest in the 17th century diarist Samuel Pepys, so when a book was published a couple of years ago on "The Plot Against Samuel Pepys," I, naturally enough, got it and read it. This takes place in the 1670s-80s, after the diary years, when Pepys was implicated in a "popish" plot (his political enemies tried to prove he was a secret Catholic, which could have been the end of him in that time, in England). One of Pepys's accusers was a shadowy character who bounced around from England to New England to the Caribbean, and, along the way, marries a Deborah Raynor on Long Island. From there, it was only a Google away to finding the large and very connected family that has been growing away in that area since the 1640s. I'll be delighted if we can, finally, get the connection worked out, to the western New York family.

Thanks so much for the additional clues.

That's helpful, Pam. I would very much appreciate receiving the information that you and Brett have worked out about the connection to the Long Island Raynors. I gather that the younger son, John D(avid) Raynor, my gggrandfather who was subsequently born in Chautauqua County in 1838, simply has a different middle initial than his father. In my family records, such as they are, the two are referred to as Sr. and Jr. The other thing I have been trying to sort out is John D.'s Civil War service. Again, family history has it that he served, but I haven't, so far, found the specific regimental and/or GAR information. I have a photograph of him, with his wife, Mary Russell Raynor, that I'll be happy to share, if you, or anyone else on the board, is interested. Again, many thanks.

In my records, I have my great-great grandfather as John D(avid?) Raynor, Sr., born 1802, and married to Sally Smith. His son, John D. Raynor, Jr., is born in Chautauqua County, 1838. Could we be talking about the same people here? I have been frustrated in tracing the Raynors back past my great grandfather, because there is a great deal of information on the Raynors on Long Island (Suffolk County), who arrive from England around 1640, but there is no visible connection to the Raynors of Chautauqua County. One story in my family was that the family had a French connection (the name is Norman French and is found on both sides of the Channel)--any connection with the brothers John (Jean?) and Modest Raynor, who arrive from France just after the revolution (theirs as well as ours)?

That's very possible. We believe that our John D. (born 1802 in Herkimer, to Chautauqua in 1830's) was the son of Lewisof Herkimer Co. Lewis' father was Stephen. He could also have had a son named Stephen....so depending on when Harriet was born, one of them could have been her father. Again, let me see what I have in my mess of notes, emails, etc as I am SO unorganized. Pam

I think I confused myself with middle initials!! John Sr. is also John D. (sorry) My records are "here, there, and everywhere" so if you can give me a few days, I can get together what I have. I keep saying"When I retire" I'm getting my geneolology work organized...and that day hasn't come yet! Brett and I "believe" that John Sr.'s father was Lewis Raynor and Lewis' father was Stephen. (Hence the Long Island to Herkimer to Chautauqua connection.)

Yes, this is my family too. My ggg grandfather was Henry Raynor, son of John S. and Sally. Henry was born in 1832 in Herkimer Co. and then came to Chautauqua County as a small child with his parents. My info. says that John S. was brought to Chautauqua in 1835 by the Holland Land Company as a surveyor and carpenter. I believe all of the other children of John S. and Sally were born in Chautauqua County. I am a seventh generation Raynor in Chautauqua Co. Do you know Brett Raynor? He is a descendent of John(the son) too and lives on Long Island. I do have more info. thanks to him and we DO believe we have figured out the connection from Long Island to Herkimer to Chautauqua. Can never be sure, but if you'd like me to forward that info. to you, I'd be glad to.

Hi Cheryl,

It is a daunting task trying to locate ancestors. I wish you luck. Have you tried the genealogy section at your library? Or maybe there is a Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints in your town, they usually have a genealogy section that the public has access to. They are helpful, too.

Sincerely,
Jennifer L. Raynor

Hi Cheryl,
My Raynors also started out in NY, all I know is that Thurston Raynor started it all when he migrated from England. I am a 2nd cousin to John P. Raynor S.J. 1923-1997. He was the president of Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI from 1965 to 1990. I was blessed to have known him. I'm unsure which Raynors are left in Omaha, but Father John had something like 8 or 9 siblings. I'm still trying to find as much information, beyond what I know, that I can. Good luck in you search and I will keep you updated if I find anything for you. I'd be willing to bet that we are distantly related. Since my father, Charles A. Raynor Jr. was an only child, I haven't any first cousins on his side of my family. I was able to find his parent's death records though. You might want to check out this site, if you haven't already: http://www.ehow.com/how_2338392_free-genealogy-records.html

Sincerely,
Jennifer Raynor

Hi Cheryl, I am related to the Raynor's in Omaha. Bill sr. and Mary Raynor were very dear to me as a child. I only know how to contact Bill jr. who lives in Wisconsin. He gave me a website that I could view pics of Thurston on and I missplaced the url. I have not had time to call Bill jr., do you by chance know what the url is? I can be contacted @ jenniferlraynor@yahoo.com
