Hello Carl,

I have seen Mahlon's name in the marriage book and always had a ? by it. I have a feeling there is a connection but it may take some digging.
First I would look at the marriage record, the Family History Centers may have the film from the NJ archives.
Anyway, the Justice of the Peace Mr. ? Pearson that married Mahlon and Ruth in March 1821 also married a Thomas W. Reading(I do have him in my data) and Polly Waldren in April of 1821. They are in Volumne 3 of the NJ marriages....do not know what other info is written in there.

Also check the death records for the county he died in, which you may have already done.

you can email me and let me know what research you have done so far.

Carol
CarolM8606@aol.com
Hello Jim,

Yes I sent for it from the Lichfield/Staffordshire Office.

I am almost finished transcribing it fully. The most important information was of course his mention of our John Reading of Gloucester America. When I am done I will share it with everyone.

Carol

Col John Reading NJ Errors & Sources

Hello everyone, I have been watching many postings/family trees on the Heritage of this line and there is conflicting data that has no source material. Having researched my ancestor for years I will share my sources and hope it filters out to others.

Source #1 was always the Leach Book written in 1898.
He tells us that Col John Reading & wife Elizabeth came here around 1684 and that their children were John (Gov.) and Elsie who married Daniel Howell. (Error)

Source #2
In the mid 20th century Hiram Deats a member of the Hunterdon County Historical Society came across a book of Sermons that had very valuable piece of paper inside.
It was a handwritten record of the Reading Family. It provided this information.
John & Elizabeth Reading, my father & mother, were married on ye 22d day of Feb: Anno Dom: 1682
Elizabeth Reading Jr was borne on ye 5th day of June, Anno 1684
About three quarters after 4 a clock in ye afternoon. Dyed June 22d 1692
John Reading Jr was borne on ye 6th day of June, Anno 1686 about 9 a clock in ye afternoon. (in another’s hand it is written dyed ye 5th day of Nov 1767 abt 3 a clock P.M.)
Mary Reading was borne on ye 26th day of September, Anno 1688, about 12 a clock at Night. dyed feb: ye 7th 1732 ( This was the wife of Daniel Howell not Elsie)
Sarah Reading was borne on ye 26th day of August, Anno 1691 about 8 a clock in ye afternoon. Departed

Source#3
In the late 1950’s a descendent of Ann Reading & Charles Beatty made a trip to England to follow leads in Charles Beatty’s journals. His published works lead us to Staffordshire England.
THE AMERICAN GENEALOGIST Volume 39, no.3, 1963 B
ENGLISH ANCESTRY OF THE READING FAMILY OF NEW JERSEY
By Joseph M. Beatty, Ph.D., of Baltimore, Maryland
“The Pipe Hill record was much more rewarding: John and Mary Reading of Pipe Hill were the parents of :
John Reading, born 7. 14. 1657
Job Reading, born 9. 8. 1659
Daniel Reading, born 5. 28. 1661
Jonah Reading, born 7. 4. 1664: died 9. 6. 1668”
(Dates are the Old Style, so our John was born Sept 14, 1657 for today’s dating)

Source#4

In the fall of 2007 while surfing for information in England I came across a reference to the will of a Daniel Reading of Staffordshire who died in 1704. I sent for this will and the following transcription confirms what Mr. Beatty found. This will also states his brother Job as executor.
Item: I give grant and bequeath to my Brother John Reading of Gloucester America all my right title and possession of Land in West Jersey aforesaid now already taken up and disposed or to be taken up together with all improvemts Buildings and other _____ in what kind or nature ___ also what calfs sprung out of the loynes of those which I formerly had unto the said John Reading his heirs and assigns for ever.
The will also states: "Now if in case that my brother John Reading should happen to be dead at this writing hereof then my desire is that what I have in the whole ___ shall be equally divided between my coz Jn Reading and my coz Mary Reading and to the survivor of them."
Note: John (Gov) and his sister Mary were the only children still alive in 1704

Thanks for letting me share

Carol Reading Morris
Hello Carol;
I can trace my own family ancestry back to my great great grandfather, Mahlon Reading (July 17, 1799 to Sept 30 1874). He was supposedly from Flemington, New Jersey, and married Ruth Everett, Mar 17, 1821 in marriage records from Hunterdon, New Jersey.

I have a book of descendents of Col. John Reading (Supplement to Certain Topics on the Ingham, Waterhouse and Allied Families) but I don't see a connection in that book between Mahlon Reading and Col. John Reading.

I'm a relative newcomer to Genealogy. Not sure how to investigate further to find the earlier ancestors of Mahlon Reading. Do you know if there were other lines of Readings coming from New Jersey apart from descendents of Col. John?

Thanks for any information.
Carl Reading

Thanks so much for the info! I was just thinking about pursuing the Pipe Hill info when I found yours. Thanks for doing the work for me!

I'm a descendant of Gov. Reading's oldest son John and have been enjoying all of the info out there on the Readings. My grandmother was a very proud "Reading," and now I understand why.

I'm now working my way through the female line. Probably not of interest to you unless you're on the same line of descent. If you are interested I'd be happy to send you my chart when it's finished.

Thanks again,

Susan O'Connell
Granddaughter of Margery Hockney Reading of California

There is a database on rootsweb.com by fred LATHROP, that covers just the county of hunterdon NewJersey.
He has listed all persons wholived and or passed through, or stayed for a time in Hunterdon.
Note that Hunterdon was broken off other counties, and other counties, parts of were added on and off over time.
So check out adjacent counties too for more information re your family members.

Pat
cw
Isaac MILLS - Hannah MILLER listed in Hunterdon Co. Database. But are also found in Morris Co, and Sussex CO. And some have that they were only in Smithtown, LI NY, and died there. Their children also fund in 1870 census in Morris COunty, NJ. Related or living next door to possible ex wife of a Lewis MILLS who had married an Emaline HAMILTON. Lewis' descendant MILLS male, DNA sample matched to my brother's DNA sample, markers posted results on www.familytreedna.com under MILLS.

Dear Bob,
I don't know if I ever sent you this letter, so here it is:

Letter: Baton Rouge, LA. July 10, 1865
Mr. Matthew Bonner
Vienna Cross Roads
Writing up my business letters today I thought I would write you one – necessarily a short one, that you may know that we are all living.1
Fortunately although no one family except our own experienced such good fortune from Baton Rouge --- none of us died or were killed. Sis’s husband was Major of the 1st Louisiana and was wounded through the shoulder at Chattanooga, Lelia’s husband Capt. Harper of the 7th LA. Was shot through the body at Antietam and then twice afterwards besides two visits to Johnson’s Island where he came near freezing to death –William was private in the 4th and although he was with Shiloh, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Nashville, Atlanta, Baton Rouge, Vicksburg, and Mobile battles and sieges, he never was touched. Tony took care of women folks in the confederate lines. Mr. Mann turned Yankee and was elected to Congress. I saw him today and he sends his respects. Aunt Sarah died over the river, she was buried in a garden – many times during her long and terrible sickness she had to be carried out under the levee to escape the enemy’s shelling helpless women and children. Virginia (William’s wife) lost her child and for the same reason it had to be buried in the garden. Together with most every one else we have lost all of our clothes, valuables, furniture, et cetera, which were packed up and sent North by the army of Generals Butler and Banks. We still have our homes and in that are more fortunate than many others. Taylors, Presses, Types etc. were burned and our stock of hardware carried away. Our firm will lose over $55,000 in all but still will come out unbroken though in no condition to look down on anyone. This has been a hard war upon our people and harder still that we are conquered. Our government was not a strong one and that was the cause of our ruin. Write to me as soon as you have leisure and tell me how you all are. Our people are all living over the river on Poplar Grove Place, but Sis will come to town this winter. Lelia will live in New Orleans, William and Tony have bought small farms in the country. I will stay in town as I am still “single footed” and take up no room.1
The prospect ahead of our Southern people is a gloom one but with a disposition always to look on the bright side, I still have hopes in the future.1
Yours Truly,
D. C. Montan1

1. Letter that My Great Uncle John W. Bonner had in his possession. From D. C. Montan of Louisiana to his cousin Matthew Bonner in 1865 Ohio. (Great Niece Bonnie Brown).
I've essentially just begun my research, so this may be a dumb question, but which John Reading are you talking about? My 5th Great Grandfather is John Reading of Hunterdon Co., NJ.... but his father is also John Reading, and so is his father, etc, etc. John Reading (1686)and prior were born in England, but that still leaves a few to choose from.

Liz

Thanks. No, I haven't tried to get Clementina's birth record. I had come up with conflicting info and just moved on to another part of my tree. This clears up at least one blank space.

John Reading Composer & Organist 1645 - 1692

Looking for ANY information regarding John Reading (born c. 1645 – died 1692, Winchester, England) who was an English composer and organist, and father of John Reading (c. 1685 – 1764) who is remembered as an important music copyist.

Little of John Reading’s life is known. He became Master of the Choristers at Lincoln Cathedral in 1670, and in 1675 at Chichester Cathedral and at Winchester Cathedral. From 1681 until his death he was organist at Winchester College.

I am trying to link my READING roots, which I can trace back to Mechlenburg, Germany through a John Reading, c. 1840. I am hopeful to find a connection with this John Reading line.

Any info GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks.

I can't help at all on Eveline Evans. I've not been able to find any info.
On Clementina M Bates - according to Leach's book on the Reading's, her mother was Emily Williamson. Leach wasn't always right, but usually when he was wrong he was "close". I tracked Clementina's father/family from 1850 censuses through 1900. When Clementina first appears in 1870 Joseph's wife is "Esther Ann". In 1880 and 1900 she becomes Hester A.(which is probably correct). In the 1900 census she states that she had been married 31 years (making it about 1869). In the 1870 census, there is a four year gap between Clementina and her sister Elizabeth. It is possible that Joseph's first wife (and mother of Clementina) died, and he remarried about 1869.
Searching through the 1850 and 1860 censuses, I can find no viable candidate for "Emily Williamson" (possible first wife of Joseph). As Joseph is still in his father's household in 1860, they would have had to have been married shortly after the census for Clementina's older brother Joseph to have been born abt 1860/61.
It may be nothing, but in the 1860 census of Joseph's father's household (including Joseph) there is a domestic servant named Mary E. Williams (age 21).
Have you attempted to get Clementina's birth record from Burlington county yet? We've had fairly good results getting registration records back to the early 1850's. It would at least verify the first name of the mother.
If you don't have any of the censuses for the father, let me know. In my quick search for you, I haven't yet been able to find Clementina in 1880, but the family had moved to Philadelphia by then.
