There were 3 James Anderson Reddell's. 1. born to William M and Nancy Cook, in 1823. 2. born to William Henry and Mary Ann in 1844. William M and William Henry were step Brothers, or as they used to say in the south half brothers. Both sons of John David but different wives. John David having 20+ children by at least 3 wives. James Anderson's(1844) brother Calvin Wesley was my great grandfather. The 3rd one born 1863 was great grandson of Thomas Reddell & Member Johns.

I have been researching the Reddell/Riddell/Riddle line for several years now. The Reddell name is on my mothers branch. Her name is Goldie Helen Reddell 26 Apr 1944, Fort Worth, TX. Her parents were James William Reddell born 18 Sept 1900, Whitt, TX (Parker Co.) and Jesse Jewel Helton Reddell born on 10 May 1913 in Cloud Chief OK. James William parents were James Richard Reddell born 3 Mar 1869, in McNairy Co,TN and Polly Cathrine Bratcher Reddell bor 17 Sept 1879 in TN. James Richards father was James Anderson Reddell born 4 Feb 1844 in West Point, TN(Lawrenceburg Co) to William Henry and Mary Ann McCracken. This where it starts to get confusing. James Anderson was a Confederate Soldier during the Civil War. He was with Company K, 3rd TN Regiment. There was also a James Anderson Reddell in the Northern Troops and he was married to Miriah Etheridge(This James Anderson died during the Civil War). My James Anderson Reddell was younger and he may have been a nephew or cousin to the Older James Anderson. It gets more confusing because my James Anderson Reddell married his 1st cousin Sarah Jane Reddell/Riddell born 24 Jun 1846 at West Point, TN (Lawrenceburg Co. Sarah was the daughter of David and Sarah Cunningham Reddell. David Reddell was a brother to William Henry Reddell.

Sarah died 25 Jan 1887 and is buried in the Union Grove Cemetery (Combs Cemetery Rd) located between Purdy and Adamsville, TN. She is buried there with several of hers and James A. children. Their Children were: 1) Mary Jane born 1867 no other info. 2) James Richard (my great grandfather) see above for info. 3) Loid T. born Mar 1870 died prior to 1880. 4)Robert L Born Dec 8 1871 and died 25 Sept 1876 and buried near his mother Sarah Jane. 5)Sarah Elizabeth born Nov 1874, she married Tully Milburn Dallas in 1894 and moved to Parker Co., TX. 6)Anna J. Born Dec 1876, no other info. 7) Lew E (Leweaser) daughter born 24 Aug 1877 and died 13 Apr 18o97, she buried near her mother Sarah Jane. 8)Annie Z. born 21 Oct 1879 and died 3 Aug 1887 and is buried near her mother Sarah Jane Anne Z. was a twin to 9) Phareze a son born 21 Oct 1879 and died Oct 23 1879, he is also buried near his mother Sarah Jane at Union Grove Cemetery. 10) Martha Ophelia born 6 Jun 1881 and died 5 Jun 1946. Martha married John Thomas Walder on 14 JUn 1903 in Indian Territory (OK). She died at Chandler in Lincoln Co., OK

On 28 Apr 1884 James Anderson Reddell obtained a marriage license in McNairy Co, TN to marry Mary J or F. Reddell. There is no record of this marriage ever being soleminzed in McNairy Co., and the kinship of James Anderson and Mary F Reddell, if any, is unknown. They had two daughters together 1) Maude Lee born 2 Apr 1886 and died 9 Nov 1886 and Sarah B. born 22 Aug 1886 and died 21 July 1890. Mary J or F Reddell and her two daughters are also buried in Union Cemetery ocated between Adamsville and Purdy, TN on Combs Cemetery Rd. the same cemetery that Sarah J. Reddell and her children are buried.

James Anderson's 3rd wife was Cynthia Ann Wall. They were married on 3 Nar 1890 in McNairy, TN. They lived in Statonville, TN (McNairy, TN). James Anderson and Cynthia Ann Reddell 4 children: 1.) Viola May born 1893 died 1957, she never married. 2.) Anderson Bryan born 22 Feb 1898 and died 1 Aug 1974, he married Josephine Flatt on 19 Jan 1919, McNairy County, TN. 3.) John H. K. born 31 Dec 1903 and died 2 May 1921. 4)Russell Gordon born 2 Oct 1905 and died 4 Apr 1931. Russell married B. Flatt on 9 Apr 1922 in McNairy, Co., TN.

James Anderson and Cynthia Wall Reddell are buried at the Old Shiloh Cemetery in the Shiloh National Park just outside of Stantonville, Tn. You can go to myspace.com and view pictures of TN including Cemeteries. The address is myspace.com/karen3626. All four of their children are buried there too, but their tombstones have been destroyed by vandals. However, James Anderson and Cynthia Wall Reddells tombstone are still standing.

Out of the sixteen only 5 lived to marry and have children of their own. They were:

James Anderson and Sarah Janes 2 children - Mary Jane (not much info on her she was alive in 1880, James Richard, Martha Ophelia Walder.

James Anderson and Mary J. or F. Reddell - both of their daughters died as infants.

James Anderson and Cynthia Wall Reddell 3 children married and had children - Viola May never married, Anderson Bryon, John H.K, and Russell Gordon Reddell.

I realize it has been 6 years since the 2nd publication of this book. Is there a way to get a copy, what will be the cost? I was married to Charles Larry Reddell and his lineage does go back to John Reddell in 1730, Frieda Reddell did the research from Robert Allen Reddell. Also is there a way to find out who John's family was and where they originated from, England, Ireland, ???
Thank you for this information.

Nettie Lee Benson Reddell Research Newsletters

Nettie Lee Benson was a Reddell/Riddell/Riddle researcher who published all her research in newsletter format during the 1980's and early 90's.

Nettie Lee was the daughter of Vora Ann Reddell Benson and a UT scholar. The Nettie Lee Benson Latin American Collection, part of the University of Texas at Austin General Libraries, is housed in the south section of Sid Richardson Hall on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

I have several years of Reddell newsletters which include family histories, family stories, family group sheets, queries, photo's and census info.

This was pre-internet and Ancestry.com so much of the information may be outdated, but the photo's and answers to the queries might help some researchers.

I am willing to do look-ups for any Reddell's who e-mail me at

wheels66 at aol.com, Subject: REDDELL RESEARCH

All e-mails default to the AOL Spam Folder so this will be the only way I will know to open your messeges.

Vicki Dean
Granddaughter of Effie Mae Reddell
Great Granddaughter of William James Reddell & Sara Jennie Ferguson
GG Granddaughter of William Carroll Reddell & Cintha Ann Riddell
Al and J. M. Reddell:
houseofnames.com has Reddell Family Crest, Coat of Arms as being English. I only know what I found. I am not trying to prove anyone wrong, as I am too learning my husband's heritage for my children. We are decendents of John, John David, William M. Reddell, Robert Allen, Henry Daniel and Harvey Burke Reddell.
Northumberland is where they origniated and Duke William of Normandy granted land for the assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D. Reddells settled in (William Riddell)Virginia in 1635, (Archibald Riddell) New Jersey in 1685, and Sarah Riddell with her husband) Virginia in 1640.
Dan Reddell: bayshoredan@aol.com has "A Reddell Family Story - The Reddell Name" from Josephine Lindsy Bass and Becky Banner c 2000, as the name being from RYEDALES from 804 - 1844. There are two meanings one being Rye farmers in Normandy, Great Britian, Ireland, and America and the other as being the tool to harvest grain in Scotland. They also descended from Germany, France, Holland and predominantly from Scotch/Irish or England. http://w.w.w.reddellstory.net/A-Reddell%20Story/The%20Reddel... is where I found this information.

Derar JMReddell:
I have two sites with the same information and we are related from the same family. redddragon9157@aol.com starts with John Reddell (1730-1910) with a son of John David Reddell (1758-1852) and lists a son as William M. Reddell (1793 to 5-25-1846) who married Anna E. Rackley (1816-1870) and 5 children and then married Nancy Cook (1803-1890) and lists James Anderson, Lucinda, **Robert Allen**, and Charlton D. Reddell. Another site from carri@cuzncarri.com starts with William M. Reddell and Nancy Cook and lists their families and children. My husband's father is listed as part of this family from Robert Allen as one of the 11 children, Harvey Burke Reddell married Ida Mae McGuire who had 4 children. We have 2 girls and 1 boy and now a grand daughter of 18 months. Congrats, you are cousins, such a small world and thanks to ancestry.com!! If you want more information please contact me at the above address. I am new at this and know very little about pics and attachments, but I do know that if you purchased a hp 4 in 1 you could scan, and send e-mails and pics at the same time.
Margaret Reddell

I am looking for info on Margaret or Margarette Reddell who was born around 1928. I don't know her father's first name, but her mother's name was Elizabeth (Bessie or Betty) Carter who had been married to a Reddell for 4 years on the 1930 census for Columbia county, FL. It looks like Bessie and Mr. Reddell were probably separated in 1930 as she was living with her brother Earnest Carter and Margaret was about a year old. Bessie married Samuel Jennings in 1934 and they all moved to Russell county, Alabama until some time in the early 40's. After that I don't know what happened to Bessie and Margaret. I would like to know more about them as I would be Margaret's step-sister (daughter of Samuel Jennings by a later marriage) Can anyone help?

Retha Jennings Hale

Re: Thomas Riddle/Reddell
