Cordelia Reel born Indiana married to Thomas Anderson born Indiana they married in Crawford County, Illinois .
I would like to know if you have her birth date and where you got it. I have a problem with Cordelia her sister died young and leaves her as an heir. I have the family but a conflict between name on census and her sister heir makes it look as though her name is Catherine Cordelia or Cordelia Catherine. Could you contact me on E mail
Ken Reel kreel;@woh.rr.com
To J. Kent

I had posted earlier to you some Census I had. Thier was an earlier sercher one Winn Reel who had written in his record that Cordellia was the only child of John A. Reel and Litty Daffron . You will see that there were 2 children in the 1850 Census Roasa(Rosalinda) and a Cathrine born in 1849 .. Rosalinda died around age 18 never marrying and in her estate the first Heir is a sister Cordellia
You do nee to contact me kreel@woh.rr.com Ken Reel

Everything I have on the Anderson family only shows the name "Cordelia Reel". Nothing shows "Catherine", but she may be one and the same.

The obituaries for Cordelia and Tom Anderson that I previously mentioned are posted on my family tree. Maybe you can glean something out of these that I can't.

And, what additional information do you want?

Thank you for the Martin Canary Anderson marriage information. Possibly the following pieces from the Anderson family bible and obituaries for Tom & Cordelia may help in figuring out the puzzle. I will attach these obituaries to my family tree this evening.

* Tom Anderson was born February 22, 1849 in Rushville, Indiana.
* Cordelia Reel was born March 12, 1849 in Vincennes, Indiana.
* Tom and Cordelia married married August 28, 1868 in Hudsonville, Illinois.
*Tom Andersons' obituary (died Feb 10, 1925) states he:
- Came to Texas in 1871 and moved to Travis County (Austin, TX) in 1877
- was survived by one brother, Robert, of Hudsonville, Illinois.
* Cordelia Reel Andersons' obituary (died Jan 13, 1933) states she:
- Moved to Gonzales, Texas in 1871 and moved to Austin, TX in 1889
- is survived by two brothers- Charles Reel of Alice, TX and J. Albert Reel of Terre Haute, Indiana.

I also need to correct a previous statement I made:
Stella Lee Anderson married Martin Canary ANDERSON (not Short). Their daughter, my grandmother, married Arthur Ernest SHORT.

Please let me know if this helps at all as your pre-1870 information would be very helpful to me if this is the same Tom Anderson.
Hello,
Received your email and now I am really confused!!
My Thomas Anderson WAS the son of Jonathan and Lucinda Garrard Anderson of Crawford co,IL
He was b c 1842 iand is in the 1850 census for Crawford,IL living with another family as was his other 7 siblings. Their parents Jonathan and Lucinda died in 1845 & 1844.in Edgar co IL I'm still trying to find his Dad's parents

I think now I may have after all these years of thinking that my Tom married Cordelia actually have NO idea who he may have married if any and if any children were his??
I did find on the IL State archives for marriages that the Martin C Anderson you are related to married a Mary Ransford in Crawford co on Oct 22 1893.
I also found on the Crawford site for cemeteries a Robert Anderson b Aug 29 1847-April 13 1928 buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Crawford along with his wife and son David L Anderson.
Thomas and Cordelia Reel came to Texas around 1871 and settled here in Austin Texas. They are my great-great grandparents. Thomas was a farmer, operated a general store and became a county commissioner for Travis County, Texas in the early 1900s. Tom, Cordelia and some of their children are buried in Oakwood Cemetery here in Austin.

I am just beginning to research my family so my information is sketchy, but I was very excited to see you had accessed some of my information on ancestry.com. That led me to this post from 2003 since I do not have any information on them prior to 1870. I do have photocopies of the birth, death and marriage pages of their family bible, given to me by my Grandmother (Margaret Anderson Short). Her mother was Stella Lee, daughter of Tom and Cordelia.

I will be adding pictures of their grave sites and the bible pages in the near future.

One question I have is about Stella Lee's husband. I was told she married her first cousin, Martin Canary Short. His father was Thomas' brother. Do you have any information on them?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

My father has died since I first posted this request for him. But if you have any more information, please send. He always wanted me to joint the DAR and I need to hire a professional geneologist, but I am hoping that the more info. I can provide, the less it will cost. I think one of Jacob's children was Charles H. Reel Born: 1853, died: 1932; that would be Schaffe's brother. I have a picture of him with his wife and children. I can scan it and attach it as a file if you would like to see it and check for a family resemblence. reeltheresa@hotmail.com

You are absolutely correct. My Reels came from Lincoln County descending from Johann George Reel, b. about 1740, and his wife Catherine Schnepp, b. 1744 - all of this info kindly supplied by contacts on this list.

My great-great grandfather John Henry Reele (don't know why they added the "e") was the half brother of James Monroe Reel.
I have been searching online for a way to purchase Mildred Buck's book. I see that she died in 2002. The Genealogical Society does not appear to have books for sale. I am descended from the Reel's in McDowell County, who came from Craven County. Does Mrs. Buck's book have Michael Reel's son Isaac Augustus Reel, born Feb 1822 in it? Thank you in advance for your help. I do not have a death date for Isaac Augustus Reel.

He helped me find the grave of my ggrandmother Nancy Reel Hill Vincent and her mother Susan Reel Hill which were in the middle of a cornfield near Caton I believe. He has helped on other occasions also. He is extremely knowledgable about all the old Craven families.

I will be happy to give you any help I can. Just Ask! As I mentioned, I have a copy of the book on the Reels and will be glad to look up you and/or your Dad, if you would like.
Elaine Vincent Kantor

Hi Kay,
I searched the index and the book itself and I'm sorry but I could not find your Reels although I did see a Craven County Reel in the 1940s with given name Roscoe. I believe some of the Palatines who colonized in North Carolina did settle somewhere other than New Bern. I wonder if you are related to the two recent posters on this list who are from the Johann Reel and Catherine Schnepp family. More than 10 years ago I corresponded with a Reel descendant from this line and we were never able to make a connection, although there may well be one.
Elaine

Hi Kay
I am at a different computer today and can't get to the book but I will check it for you tomorrow. However, all the Reels in the book trace back to Peter Reel born prior to 1700 who was with a group of German Palatines who came to New Bern NC from England around 1709. Peter Reel is identified in early records as Peter Reel, Huguenot. As I understand it and I am willing to be corrected, the Reel surname is originally of French origin which would fit with the Huguenot description. A large number of the French Huguenots fled severe religious persecution and went into Holland, Switzerland, Germany etc. around 1685. Around 13,000 to 15,000 of them later went to England when conditions became unbearable in Germany. Queen Anne offered them temporary asylum. From England a large number went to Ireland, a large number to America to New York and Carolina colonies in 1609 -1610 and some remained in England. The Carolina group founded New Bern, N. C.
Therefore, your Reels could certainly have been in Germany for a short period or a longer period of time. I am not a historian by any means but this is what I have gathered from my reading in trying to pursue Peter Reel's ancestry. So I would advise anyone reading this to do their own research to verify or dispute what I have said. At any rate, I will be very happy to check the book for you for David or anyone or anything else you would like.
Elaine

I trace my Reel line back to David Reel born about 1771 in N.C., died 26 March 1839. Succeeding generations are in Indiana; Absolem Reel, William McCracken Reel, Lee Roscoe Reel, and John Reel (my father) to name a few. David's father is supposedly Johann Reel (Riel) born in Germany. Any info on this line in your book? Thanks, Kay
James Oscus Reel b. 30 jan 1877. He is a son of Jacob Reel & Sophronia Hiatt. My Aunt was able to recall his brothers and sisters, but not him. Her grandfather is Jesse William Reel, James's older brother. Since my aunt was born in 1912, that agrees with your conclusion that he left Indiana before my aunt would have been old enough to remember him.

I do find him in the Kokomo census in 1900, 1910 and 1920.

Do you know where in West Virginia these Reel's came from? My gg grandfather was Solomon Reel 1824-1901. He served in the War of Mexico and the Civil War. He lived a great deal of his life in West Virginia and a portion of it in Ohio. He is buried in Grant County, West Virginia. The only info I have on his upline is that his mother was Margaret Reel (I have conflicting info that Reel was her maiden name and then also her married name.) Solomon was married twice and fathered 23 children. A family member has the family bible with all the birth dates of the children listed.

In case you never found it, Mildred Reel Buck did extensive genealogical research on the Reels and put together a soft cover notebook which she used to sell before her death on the Reels. I feel certain that the New Bern Library would have a copy and you could ask Victor Jones there if it is still being sold anywhere. I understand she also did a book on Reelsboro.
I am descended from the Reels from Susan Reel who married Henderson Hill back to Peter Reel who came to Craven County with the German Palatines in the early 1700s. If you would like further information, I would be happy to try to help as I do have a copy of the book. Mrs. Buck really did all the Reel descendants an invaluable service and was always eager to help other genealogistsl
P.S. I assume this is the same James Reel since how many have O. as a middle initial? I understand James was sort of a black sheep in the family. He was rather young when he left Indiana, too, so it's not too surprising he's not remembered as his siblings might be.

Thanks! I'll pass along the information to my cousin who is doing research on the Reel Family. The last I heard, James had taken off for California. For some reason, she thought he made it to Hawaii and died in a leprosy colony there, but there's no record of him being there. (assuming we're talking about the same James Reel--I don't know what his middle name is, although he could have been born in 1877)
