obit for John Rees, born 1839 Wales, died 1922, Kansas

The Barnard Bee, Lincoln County, Kansas, Aug. 17, 1922, page 8:
JOHN REES PASSED AWAY
The community was saddened last Thursday evening to learn of the death of one of its most respected citizens, John Rees, which occurred at his home in Barnard about eight p.m. that evening. While it was generally known the past few months, that Mr. Rees' health was failing, not even the members of his family realized that the end was so near, as he was able to get around and spent much time out of doors until about two weeks ago. His death naturally came as a severe shock to his relatives and friends, as he passed away while peacefully sleeping, seemingly without the slightest pain.
John Rees was one of the pioneers of Kansas, coming to this state in 1866. He homesteaded the quarter section of land where the townsite of Asherville now stands, and he operated the first post office and mercantile store in Mitchell county. He was honest and sincere in all his dealings and square with his fellow men, and had much to do with the moulding of the communities in which he lived during his entire life. The obituary follows:
John Rees was born in Wales, Dec. 20, 1839. He came with his parents to America soon after, settling at Pittsburg, Penn. Some years later they moved to Missouri and at the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army, Company "I", 26th Missouri Infantry. He was soon appointed captain of his Company and served in that capacity until the close of the war. In 1865 he was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Goodwyn of Kingston, Ga., and he and his bride returned to Marion, Mo. In 1866 they moved to Kansas and homesteaded the quarter section of land, where the townsite of Asherville now stands. To this union nine children were born, one dying in infancy. Those living are S.G. of Beverly, C.B. of Asherville, W.D. of Barnard, C.L. of Buhl, Idaho, Mrs. Emma Rammage of Bloomington, Kan., Mrs. Ida Dunigan of Scottsville, and Hattie Tanquary of Buhl, Idaho. There are twenty grandchildren and great grandchildren living, also one brother and two sisters. They are Frank Rees of Filer, Idaho, Mrs. Mary Shull of Asherville, and Sarah Borgen of Woodston.
He moved to Barnard in 1897, where he spent the remainder of his life. He engaged in the Drug business here and retired only a few years ago. In 1906 his wife died and in 1909 he was married to Thelma Shaw of Atlanta, Ga., who survives him.
He was converted some fifty years ago, and united with the Baptist Church at Asherville. He was a staunch member of the church for many years.
Funeral services were held Sunday August 13. A short service was conducted at the home by Rev. Reynolds, after which the remains were taken to the baptist Church at Asherville for the final services. Interment was made in the Asherville cemetery. The pall bearers were all ex-service men, furnished by the local post of the American Legion.

My great-uncle, Enoch Rees was born in Llanfabon, Eglwysilan in about 1862, the son of Edward and Ann. He had brothers, Thomas and William (my grandfather) and sisters E;izabeth, Mary and Martha. I was always told that he emigrated to America but I can find no record of him. I would be delighted to hear from anyone who might be related or has any information on my Uncle Enoch.
Many thanks
John

Thos M Rees CA State Assemblyman

I found this on the CA state archives site. This isn't my family, but I thought it might be helpful to someone. There's lots more on the site.

Oral History Interview with
THOMAS M. REES
California state Assemblyman, 1954 - 1962
California state Senator, 1962 - 1966
united State Congressman, 1966 - 1976
December 10 and 11, 1987
Santa Cruz, California
By Carlos Vasquez
Oral History Program
University of California, Los Angeles

I. LIFE HISTORY
[Session 1, December 10, 1987]
[Begin Tape 1, Side A]
Family History
VASQUEZ: Congressman Rees, could you tell me something
about your life history, your family background?
REES: I was born in Los Angeles, March 26, 1925. My
father's name is Caradoc Rees. He emigrated from
Wales, I think at about the age of twelve or
thirteen, and apprenticed as a painter in Minnesota.
He then served in World War I. After
World War I, he married my mother.
My mother's maiden name is [Mildred]
Melgaard. Her father was a Norwegian emigrant,
and her mother was Swedish. Her father was a
banker who owned a series of small banks in
northern Minnesota. It was a strange marriage
because my father dropped out of school
[Laughter] when he was twelve to work--because
that's what one used to do--while my mother's
VASQUEZ:
REES:
2
family was well educated. But he was a very
intelligent person and was an excellent craftsman
and artist. They moved to Los Angeles from
Minnesota, I guess, around 1923, '24.
My family life was essentially middle class,
my father always had his own business. It was
called the Rees Decorating Company. He concentrated
on the houses of the very rich. [He did]
a lot of murals, a lot of specialized decorating,
for example, gold-leaf decorative ceilings. I
grew up in that field. There was a fairly large
Welsh community in Los Angeles, and I had a lot
of relatives. The Welsh are great singers.
In what part of the city did you grow up?
I grew up in West Los Angeles. My parents still
live there, around Burton Way and La Cienega
[Boulevard]. It wasn't that expensive in those
days. I think they paid less than $3,000 for
their house. The latest offer--because it's been
rezoned--was about $650,000. The developers
can't understand [Laughter] why they've lived
there for so many years and have not sold out.
My father is ninety-one and my mother is eightysix.
Marriage of Mary Rees and Unknown Morgans in Wales 1880's

Hi there,

I am trying to trace one Many Rees back to the correct Rees branch. This is what I have and perhaps some of you may have the missing link.

Mary Morgans, Widow married to my great great grandfather James Elton 26 Dec 1891 - both resident in Cwmbach, Aberdare, Wales at the time. Mary was listed as 24 years old which puts her birth about 1867/68. The 1901 census suggests she was born in 'Aberaman'.

Now Mary Morgans maiden name is Rees, her father is listed on the Marriage Certificate as 'John Rees', Coal Miner. There are too many 'Mary Rees' born around 1867 in this area with the father 'John' for me to accurately pin down who I am talking about.

The other route is perhaps to find her previous spouse (Morgans) ... but alas the same challenge (lot's of Morgans ... and I don't have a first name).

If anyone knows of the marriage of a ??? Morgans to a Mary Rees somewhere in the 1880's in Wales then I'd be happy to hear the details.

Thanks in Advance,

David

Pat, I notice you mention that Thomas Clopton Rees is your great-grandfather. I don't have any family info, but you might be interested in the following.

Do you know if he was a songwriter? I have a copy from the December 1854 issue of The Organ (Harris Co., GA) which has a song by T. C. Rees. I think this is probably Thomas Clopton Rees. His brothers John Palmer and Henry Smith were very active songwriters in The Sacred Harp, published by B. F. White and E. J. King. White was the editor of the paper called The Organ. rl_vaughn -AT- yahoo.com

My great grandfather Samuel Rees, son of William Rees, married Henrietta McKoon, whose mother was Margaret Clapsaddle. I am sitting on some of their Samuel and Henrietta's furniture right now. Their son, Samuel Rees, Jr., was my grandfather. I have Henrietta's photo album and I am trying to identify the people in it. William wrote a very interesting autobiography that was finished by his son Thomas, who was a journalist.

She and her husband Raymond have no direct descendents, having had one child who died without having children of his own.

I would love to have the marriage certificate copy, and wonder how you came to have it? I have several things that belonged to them, including a nickel-plated teapot inscribed with their wedding date, 22 July, 1912.

If you receive this message, I will send you my home address. Thanks for your posting.

Sincerely,

David Spencer
Portland, Oregon

John Matthew Rees, Jr., 83, born in Erie,CO, PA," son of, John and Marie (Brennan) Rees.** Served. US, Army, WW II, Sargent *
Rees Jr., John Matthew "Jack",

John “Jack” Matthew Rees, Jr.
John “Jack” Matthew Rees, Jr., 83,
of Erie, entered eternal life on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at his home. Jack was born in Erie on June 30, 1925, the eldest son of the late John and Marie (Brennan) Rees. Jack was a WW II and Korean War veteran, enlisting in the Army during his senior year at East High School. During WW II, Jack served in the Philippines with the 433rd Field Artillery Battalion as a forward observer. Jack then served his country for a second time during the Korean War with the 49th Field Artillery Battalion as a forward observer. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sargent from Walter Reed Hospital with a Purple Heart and numerous other war medals. Recalling many stories to his family and friends, one particular story he enjoyed telling was how he and all the men on his ward would collect money for booze. They would call a cab to come to the back door, where the nurses wouldn’t see what they were doing, give the cab driver their order and money, and send him off to secure their liquor. If the cab driver got caught, he didn’t get the tip!! He had a life-long career in sales retiring from Clark Industrial Trucks. He was a member of the Maennerchor Club and Saint Jude the Apostle Catholic Church. Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Motley Rollen,
and his second wife, Alfreda Sybyl;
brothers James and William;
sisters, Alice and Jean; and his grandson, Joseph Dombrowski. He is survived by his son, Henry (Hank) Rees, of Erie; daughters Margaret (Peggy) Williams and her husband, Vern, of Virginia Beach, Va.,
and Barbara (Babsie) Rees, of Erie;
nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brugger Home for Funerals, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard. Services will be held there Monday at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Saint Jude the Apostle Church at 10 o’clock. Burial in Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, The Korean War Memorial, or the Purple Heart Society. Condolences at www.bruggerfuneralhomes.com Erie Times-News ,
from 2/20/2009 - 2/22/2009,

Saint Jude the Apostle Church,"
Brugger Home for Funerals,

I am interested in anyone who has ties to the Rees families who lived and worked along PENN AVE, Allegheny County, PA in the mid-late 1800's and early 1900's. I am trying to see if James Ress and John Rees were brothers. Also, looking for information on John Rees and his sons, LLewelyn or "Louis", David E, RobertR. and John T. Rees Jr. John T Rees Sr.'s wife was Ann Griffith. I believe the boys married but I have no information. They had sisters,Sarah (married a Bowland or Boroland), Rachel (married Harry C.

Hello there. I am a desecendant of George Rees, Physician, and his first wife MARY Williams (she was the mother of all his children). I descend from Emily who married Augustus Bazeley, Solicitor of Liskeard, Cornwall. Their daughter Adelaide Eliza married Maurice Deacon, Mining and Civil Engineer. Their daughter Hilda married Alfred F M Wright, and their son Richard F M Wright was my father.

In the last few weeks I've collected quite a lot about Rees descendants, some from Census returns, and some probably from some of the readers of these pages as there's some patchy stuff on One World Tree.

You'll probably be aware that George was the proprietor of a 'madhouse' called Pembroke House. His clients were mostly employees of the Honourable East India Company (the precursor of the British Empire of India) and he seemed to have a good success rate. He lived at 50 Finsbury Square (near St Paul's Cathedral in London) he had a distinguished doctor son, George Augustus who died young leaving a large family.

I'd be interested in the following:

1. Anything you have that might be interesting!
2. Finding out who his clergyman father in Pembrokeshire was (he would be a nonconformist or dissenter, rather than an 'established' Church of England man I'm sure)
3. Linking with distant cousins too.

George Rees is worth Googling, along with the phrase 'Pembroke House', similarly in Google Books.

Charles
Stratford-upon-Avon, UK

obit for Decatur Stout Rees, born 1836 Ohio, died 1911 Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, March 23, 1911, page 2:
Rees
The oldest surviving pioneer of Ottawa county was taken away last Sunday afternoon, when Decatur S. Rees died at battle Creek, Michigan, whither he had gone a month ago in hope of recovering his health. Mr. Rees had been suffering for a year past, but with the courage of the old settler and soldier he refused to give up until the last. His son Charles was with him at the sanitarium in Battle Creek and brought the body home. The funeral was held at the residence yesterday, and burial was in Highland cemetery.
Decatur Stout Rees was born in Preble county, Ohio, November 17, 1836. With his brothers Jacob G. and Franklin C. he came to Kansas in 1857, settling in Franklin county. Two years later, with his brother Frank he started out on the plains, working for Majors Russell and Waddell, Irwin Allen, and other firms engaged in transporting freight from Leavenworth and other Missouri river points to military points in New Mexico, Utah and other western states. The freighting was done by ox teams, and Mr. Rees served in every capacity from bull whacker to wagon master. His first trip to the Solomon Valley was made in 1862, on a trapping expedition. Two years later he settled in this county, and since that time the Reeses have been identified with the growth and development of the valley.
On March 24, 1872, Mr. Rees was married to Miss Phoebe Rebecca Duncan. Their children are Mrs. Harry Bower, of Fairview, Oklahoma; Charles D. Rees, Mrs. Jesse E. Flint and Edwin C. Rees of Minneapolis. Of eleven brothers and sisters, only three survive him: Captain J.G. Rees of Greeley, Kan., M.B. Rees of Cove, Ore., and Rear Admiral C.F. Rees, U.S.N., retired.
The funeral services were conducted by the Minneapolis Lodge of Masons, of which Mr. Rees was an honored member. Many Masons from the Bennington and Delphos lodges were in attendance. The ceremony was pronounced by J.S. Richards, master of the lodge, H.F. Jackman and A. F. Riddle, wardens. A choir composed of Mrs. Floyd Jordon, Misses Gladys Popham, Edna Murphy, Messrs. Charles brown and Frank Woods, sang three beautiful hymns. The pall bearers were Messrs. J.W. Smith, B.F. Markley, G.N. Billings, A.G. Johnson, F.E. Babcock and E.K. Raper. Profuse offerings of beautiful flowers gave testimony of the affection held for "Dick" by his neighbors and friends.
A procession of Masons led the way to Highland cemetery. There, after the burial service, in the Kansas sunlight that had shone upon him for fifty years, the body of Decatur S. Rees was laid to rest in the bosom of the land he had loved so well.

HIGHLAND CEMETERY OF MINNEAPOLIS
Rees D. S. 11/17/1836 3/19/1911 4 9

Rees in Mississippi

This is a bit of a reach, but am down to grasping at straws. My maternal side is dominantly "Reece" at least as far as my GGgrandfather Charles Reece in Clinton Co., Iowa. Going back to Mississippi, Yalobusha County I encounter his father Marion McDonald Reece (Rees?) Indications are that a marriage between Marion McDonald "Rees" and Julia Ann Brewer in Monroe County, MS on 14 Aug 1851 may be my GGGgrandparents with either a name change or botched spelling. At any rate, the Reece surname seems to be gone and perhaps replaced with "Rees". Dates all fit, only the name is morphed.
Anyone with some ideas? Would gladly share info.

Chuck
tottka1@livingston.net
Help with Rees(e) in PA/Wales

I've been researching Rees(e) in Pennsylvania and Wales on and off for 15 years. I moved across country a few years ago and lost a lot of my data and research logs so I don't have a lot of specifics any more. I am descending from the Rees' below but have not been able to break past Job Rees (for whom I no longer have birth/death dates). Any info you may be able to provide on the line below would be greatly appreciated. I'm also currently in contact with family to reconstruct the line in PA and would be glad to share anything I learn.

Regards,

Tom Maloney

Cloe Etta Reese 1892– m.
Research Frustration
I have a rather annoying problem.

I’ve been researching my Rees(e) ancestors and have hit a wall. Some research that was provided to me suggests that my 3rd great grandfather, Hugh Rees, was born in Wales in 1817, married there in 1838, and had his first child, Joram, there in 1839. However, Welsh research shows that the only Hugh Rees in the area was born in 1811 and there is absolutely no record of his son’s birth in Wales. The name Joram is from Biblical Hebrew and is not a name used in Wales.

A marriage between a Hugh Rees and Elizabeth (Evans) is recorded in 1838 in Wales. Father of the Groom is Lewis Rees and witnessed by Evan Rees. The groom was over 21. That’s all the info the marriage certificate provides. The 1841 Wales census for the area shows Hugh and Elizabeth with a daughter Gwen and the same family appears to be in the same location in 1851.

US Censuses, beginning in 1850, show Hugh, his wife, Elizabeth, and son, Joram living in Cambria County, PA. The ages are consistent with Hugh being born in 1817 and Joram being born in 1839. The census data lists Hugh and his son being born in Pennsylvania, and wife Elizabeth being born in Wales.

I know Hugh’s death was after May 1893…a newspaper article in Indiana County, PA states he was found wandering around in poor weather for over a day and became demented. Given that his age was around 80 at that time, I don’t think he would have survived to long after.

No government birth records exist in Cambria County during the period of Hugh’s birth. I also do not know who his parent’s were.

There are no immigration records, that I can find, that show Hugh, Elizabeth, and Joram entering the country between 1839 and 1850.

I cannot find any US Census for Hugh in 1840 that match up.

Joram Reese served in the Civil War, I have just placed an order for his compiled service record from NARA to see if there are any new clues, such as birthplace. Joram died on 28 October 1864 at the General Hospital in Washington DC but there is not listing of him in any of the indexed death records for DC of the time.

I’m a little burnt out research-wise, does anyone have any ideas?

Hi. I have looked for the marriage record I mentioned in the 2005 post, but I don't have it any more. I ordered it from the Oregon State Archives, and they sent me a copy for a nominal fee. I'm sorry I can't send it to you.
