Eastern European

The surname could be from any of these European countries, for example: Poland, Slovakia, Slovania, Ukrainia, Czechoslovakia, Russia. There is so much to look at. Read up on the wars throughout the world in 1941. It's mindboggling. The spellings of surnames were changed by the powers in control. Sad, but it happened.

I'm trying to find my Regula roots. Who knws ... it's worth looking into every aspect we can.

daisies13@hotmail.com

Charles Drake Rigler was married to Frances Maud Bisley on April 2nd 1893, it say's on the wedding certificate that his father was John Rigler deceased. John Rigler was a carpenter and Charles Drake Rigler a labourer. Charles and Frances married in Battersea, London. To my knowledge they had 5 children Isabella, Charles, John Henry, Ethel Rose (my paternal grandmother) and Jessie. I would also be grateful of any information re Isabella Rigler.

Jonathan:
All details look correct, John Henry Rigler was the father of all the ones listed. I am still not sure which Essington but everything else is right.
My other post goes backwards and should link into the Poole area although I am still looking for some more information on this.
Kevin P.

All the Rigler's of North Devon are descended from John Henry Rigler born November 1900.
Charles Drake Rigler born 13-11-1867 was the father of John Henry Rigler born in 1900.
Isabella Rigler was the mother of Charles Drake Rigler. She was Born in Poole (1841 to 1843)
I note from Charles Drake Rigler's birth cert. That it has the father's name missing and there is no former name for Isabella Rigler There was a correction Rigley was crossed out and corrected to Rigler. (perhaps she was a single mother?).
From the 1881 census Isabella Rigler was 38? Born in Poole. Married to Robert Bolton in 1879
From the 1901 Census there was an Isabella Bolton 59 and stated born in London?? living in Battersea.
I have found an Isobela Rigler in the 1861 census for Kinson Dorset who was born in Poole aged 21?. Her father was John Rigler born in Hurn Hants around 1811. But I am unsure if this is the correct person as the ages seem to vary on the census records.
I am therefore looking for a birth cert. for Isabella Rigler in the Poole area around 1841 to 1843
Or other information on the Isobela Rigler mentioned above.
Does anyone have a record that might match Isabella Rigler born around 1840 to 1843 in the Poole area?
If the 1881 census is correct and Isabella did come from Poole Dorset then all of John Henry Rigler's descendants would be able to trace back into the Poole area.

Katy

I meant to ask in my last post - What evidence do you have for the Austrian connection and the move to Hungary of part of the family? This is interesting as the REGLER family has a similar story about an Austrian link although the REGLER family story places it much earlier, in the early 1800s. The REGLER family story has 7 Austrian brothers coming over to the UK and some (all?) moving to Scotland. In fact, one REGLER family did move to Scotland from the East End of London in the mid 19th century but returned a decade or so later.

I mention this only to illustrate the point that much in genealogy is myth, or at least a distortion of the truth. However, as your RIGLER family story has similar points I would be very interested to hear more details.

Jonathan Reggler

Regular in Newfoundland

Stella

I have more information about Regulars in the UK, sent to me by my mother. It involves Regulars born/married/died in the UK between 1847 and 1863 (14 events in total). The town of Beaminster in Dorset is the event place in 7 of them and other Dorset towns feature in 3 of the others).

Dorset now contains Riglars (61 in total in the UK telephone directory) and Riglers (153). There are three Riglar households listed in Beaminster today.

I have no doubt that all the various spellings (Reggler / Reglar / Regler / Regular / Riggler / Riglar / Rigler are linked. The problem is that it seems likely that "spelling" mistakes have been made on a number of occasions in a number of directions. Whether we can untangle them or not remains to be seen.

I am sure you will already have come across the reference to Willis Reglar and Sarah Reglar in Harbour Grace maried in 1875 and producing a daughter in 1915, and the tombstone in the Protestant cemetery at Conception Bay North-Harbour Grace, Southside to the memory of Euphemia May Reggler beloved wife of James Reggler died 6 Jan 1936 aged 59 years.

That places Reggler, Reglar and Regular in Harbour Grace.

My e-mail is Jonathan.Reggler@ukgateway.net
Regular

My mother (amateur genealogist) and I are studying our own family name and similar ones such as Regular. Interestingly I have been in contact with a John Clifford Reggler born in Montreal whose family comes from Harbour Grace. His grandfather used the spelling Regular and his father had both spellings on his birth certificate. My great-great-great grandfather William Reggler was a shipkeeper in the Rotherhithe docks and his son James was a boatbuilder. A Christopher Regler (note spelling) also lived in the area and was a mariner.

My guess is that the Regglers (a name almost certainly derived from Regler - a German name - or Rigler or Riglar) emigrated to Canada and an immigration clerk mis-spelled the name and produced Regular, which is an almost exclusively Canadian (and US to a lesser extent) name.

I am about to do a mailing to all the Regulars and Regglers that I have found via Ancestry.com (the others will come later) enclosing my own family tree in the hope that we can find out more. You are probably on my list!

Best wishes

Jonathan Reggler

My Great Grandmother was Anna Amelia Regular born December 8, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland. The only information that I have is that her father was named Michael Regular.
