Lawrence Henry Reiber died July 7, 1983. He was living in Tryon and his father's name was Stephen. I will try to check his obit in the Tryon Daily Bulletin and look at his death certificate when I get a chance. Mother's name not mention.

He was a class act and I was very fortunate in being able to meet John and his wife at a Reiber family reunion that we had in York, PA. He loved genealogy and was always willing to help anyone. I had been sending Reiber obituaries from York this year and had not gotten any responses. Now, we know.

Thanks, Lonereiber, for posting this news. I only wish I had his dedication and his perfectionism in the documentation that he provided.

May he RIP and may his family live with the great memories that I am sure that they have of him.

Joseph Reiber, Germany/Brooklyn, NY 1824-1907

I am searching for information for our family tree on Joseph Reiber, who would have been born in Germany on Sept. 14, 1824 and died in Brooklyn, NY in on Feb 14, 1907. He was married to Christine (b. dec 20, 1831 in Germany, d. Jul 13. 1891 in Brooklyn, NY) but I don't know her maiden name. Sometime after arriving in the US, the last name became Reaber.

I don't know what part of Germany they are from. I am guessing it is possible that his name in Germany was spelled Josef. I would appreciate any information that anyone may have. Thank you!

Need info on Edward Reiber 1st Village Marshall Maple Hts., OH

I am looking for relatives of 1st Village Marshal of Maple Heights Village, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. We know his name was Edward Reiber and he was appointed Village Marshal 7/13/1915. I found an Edward Reiber who lived in Maple Heights about that time and was about the right age. I’ve done some research and believe he had two daughters. One died in MA with her maiden name. The other seems to have disappeared between 1910 and 1920, right about the age she might get married. I am trying to find out if she had children or grandchildren. We are looking for relatives so that we may have them present during a police officer memorial parade and service. This is what I’ve researched.

I can’t yet confirm that this person was the 1st Village Marshall of Maple Heights, but I’m working on it.

Edward J Reiber born Assumption, Christian County, Illinois July 20, 1871.

His wife, Bertha Maria Caroline Bohning She was born 12/28/1871 in Independence Township, Cuyahoga County, Ohio

In July 1896, in Newburgh Heights, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, they married.

Their first child, a daughter, Viola E. Reiber, was born February of 1896.

Their second child, a daughter, Velma A. Reiber, was born July 15, 1897.

On June 7, 1900 Edward Reiber lived with his wife and two daughters in Newburgh Hamlet, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

On May 3, 1910, Reiber lived with his wife and two daughters on Jefferson Street in Bedford Township (Maple Heights). His occupation was listed as wagon driver and his industry was listed as trade wagon.

At some point between 1910 and 1920, his daughter Viola stops living with them. We do not yet know if she died or married or what happened to her.

On January 10, 1920 he lived at 126 Rockside Road in Maple Heights Village. He lived with his wife Bertha Reiber and one daughter Velma Reiber. His occupation was listed as Teamster.

On April 18, 1930 he lived at 390 Corkhill Road in Bedford Village. He lived there with his wife and one daughter Velma Reiber. His occupation was listed as laborer and his industry was listed as excavating and grading.

His wife Bertha died 12/29/1957 in Garfield Heights, Ohio. He died two months later on 12/26/1958 at Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights. (Cuyahoga death certificate # 24532)

On May 10, 1984, his daughter Velma A Reiber died at 02169 Quincy, Norfolk, Massachusetts (Death cert # 029843). She died with her maiden name. It is unknown yet whether or not she married or had children.

The key to finding family/descendants of Edward Reiber would be his first daughter Viola. Sometime between 1910 – 1920, the first daughter Viola Reiber stopped living with her parents. She may have married and changed her name or may have died or something else. If she married, there may be descendants of Edward Reiber.

John, I received a message that you intended for Anna Moselle Reiber, but was interested in what you said in your note about a book you had written about the Reibers.

My Reiber family was Carl and Josephine Reiber who immigrated from Germany to Texas. I'm not sure where in Germany they were from, but I was wondering if you might have a family by this name. There were four children with them, Carl, Marie, Otto and (I can't remember off the top of my head.) I have the immigration date in my notes at home if it would be helpful.

Anna Wagner

Re: Reiber in Philadelphia

Charlene,
Your Charles Kohs may be the father of my Charles Kohs and his sister Emma (Kohs) Abrams. On the 1900 census of Philadelphia ED 532 - 23rd ward on Bridge St Dwelling/family #135/136 are Charles and Chirstina Kohs. They were both born in 1848, are both age 57 and have been married for 30 years. Christina had 3 children but only 2 are still living in 1900. They each immigrated from Germany - Charles in 1862 and Christina in 1850 so they were probably married in Philadelphia about 1870. My Charles Kohs, his wife Ida Musick and their children Charles A, Emma, Anna and Charles' brother-in-law Samuel Abrams, his wife Emma and children Annie & Ida are on the same page of the 1900 census at 5108 and 5110 Cottage St.

I hadn't looked further at the elder Kohs's. But on the 1920 census Charles A. Kohs (age is hard to read) is living with The Abrams family and is listed as father-in-law, their address is 1924 Bridge St and Charles Jr & his wife Ida are still around the corner at 5110 Cottage St.

I did find another Kohs family husband Charles Kohs age 47 house carpenter and his wife Elizabeth on the 1870 census of Philadelphia. They were from Gemany and had eight children all born in Germany including a son Charles b c1848.

There were some problems with Ancestry's online of the 1910 census so I hadn't looked for Charles & Christina on it at all.

I do have some records from North Cedar Hill Cemetery in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. there are several Charles Kohs's buried there in the Kohs plot 9L One on Jan 7 1926, another on Jan 26, 1930. Christiana Kohs was buried there 21 Oct 1918. There are no ages or other information on the cemetery records.

I know that my Charles Kohs had a daughter named Emma Christiana who married Howard John Kniss in 1916.

Charles, Elisabeth, Crestenia, Louis and Louisa all ended up in Kansas. Reno County, KS I am unable to trace any other part of this family. On one census Charles states that he was in the Civil War in the state of D. C. Company B. and in the Navy. I am unable to locate any record of this other than on the census. They must have emmigrated between 1864 and 1870. I cannot find anything on that either.
If anyone has any information on this family I would like to see it.

Thank you very much!

Butler Co. PA Reiber Families & Descendants

I am looking for anyone else who might be researching the Reiber families in Butler County PA.

My Great Great Grandmother is Emma Reiber, she first married William PHILIPS, and then Alexander MCMILLAN. She was born in NY around 1848. Her family then moved to Summitt Township; and then Middlesex Township. Both Townships are in Butler Co PA.

Known Children of Emmas were Edward PHILIPS, Laura Philips CONNOR, possibly Annie J Philips, Eve McMillan SHAFFER and Margie McMillan SHIRLEY

Emma's father is Jacob Reiber--born in Goeningen, Wurtemberg Germany on May 4, 1818--married Catherine SIMMER and also Elizabeth MARTIN.

I have attached her son's obit (Edward Philips) for your reference.

I would really love the opportunity to speak with any of you interested in the Butler County families. My email is eeyore9@verizon.net

Thanks,

Amy Philips-Haller
