Hi, I wish I had some info but I know so little about my g-grandfather, Frederick Reimers. However, if you are looking for obituaries you might want to try the North American Baptist Heritage Commission in South Dakota. I believe that they cover all of the Baptist churchs. You can e-mail them at: nabarchives@sfseminary.edu. I don't know if they have other info as well.
Good luck.

Hello, I am trying to locate any info on a Paul Reimer/Riemer who was married to Bertha W. Semrau. They had two children- Rudolph and Alex. I beleive that Bertha died around 1891 in Detroit as Paul remarried in 1892 in Detroit. He later moved to Canada but, I am told at least Rudolph stayed in Detroit. My Semrau family went to Ebenezer Baptist Church, an offshoot of First German BAptist. It was located on Mt.Elliott. I have been told there were no records kept by either church. I know some members of this church were buried at what is currently called Trinity Cem. on Mt.Elliott. I would love to find out more on Paul and Bertha.

Frederick (Fritz) Reimer (s) stonecutter, Detroit

My great grandfather, Frederick (Fritz)Reimer(s)(sometimes Riemer(s)) came to Detroit aboard the Morovia from Hamburg in March of 1884. He was said to be an only child but there were other Reimer's living in Detroit at the time. He was a stonecutter and was briefly in business with a Feldpausch. He married Wilhelmina Keppler in December of 1884 and had 5 girls that survived him, Louise, Anna (Proctor), Grace (Curtin), Wilhelmina (Hansen) and Edna (McCarthy). He died in 1900 and his widow lived on two streets in Detroit near other Reimer's after his death, Leland and McDougall. Any relation?

Hi Heather,
My name is Mary, maiden name Reimer. My father was born in Steinbach, Manitoba in 1915. His name was Harvey, son of Bernhardt and Helena Warkentin Reimer. His grandfather was Klaas R. Reimer born in 1837. The Mennonite Reimers came to Canada in 1874 so it is possible your great grandmother was also born in Russia. John would have been 18 when they arrived in 1874.
My father and his family came to Ilinois in 1923 and later moved to California where I was born. My father used to write his cousins in Manitoba but we all lost contact after he passed away in 1959. I hope this gives you a little info. Best of luck,
Mary

Thank you for your inquiry, but I am relatively certain that there were no other children orphaned from this family.

Edward Reininger (Reiniger & other spellings) 1856-1931 married Sophia Reimer (also many spellings) 1867-maybe 1894 on 22 Oct 1883. Children were Edward Christian 1884, Fredrick 1885, Frank George 1887 and Elsie M. 1889.

The incident resulting in the children being orphaned was a shooting. Edward shot Sophia and her mother Maria at her mother's house. Sophia had left Edward and the 3 boys because of infidelity. The 14 mo. old Elsie was taken with her mother. On 07 Sep 1890 Edward approached his mother-in-laws home and encountered the three on the porch. He asked Sophia to retun home and when she refused he pulled a gun and shot her 3 times. Sophia's mother was shot twice. News articles indicate both survived, but I believe Sophia was probably institutionalized and possibly died in 1894. I have a 1905 Wis Census record indicating Elsie was living with grandmother Maria (Rimer). The boys were sent to the industrial school shortly after the shooting and were latter transfered to St. Aemilianus Orphan Asylum.

Edward was captured and at trial was declaired insane. A news article indicated he was sent to an asylum. In 1910 he appears in a census at Waupun Prison. 1907 & 1910 prison records indicate the charge was not related to the shooting. But they do indicate he was a widower at that time.

My own oral & written family history has no mention of any other children. One other thing though, Son, Frederick, was adopted out and for a time took the name Fred Norton. The shooting must have deeply impacted him and latter in life he took the name Reimer, his mother's maiden name. He had an infant daughter (name unknown) who died 05 Mar 1913, 3 hours after birth. He latter had another daughter Janet (Buerki). Fred, wife Anna, and infant dau. are all buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Madison, WI.

I doubt if any of this helps your cause. But I'm revealing it just incase there is a chance. Sophia herself may have been from a broken home. All records I find for her have her living with her mother and siblings, no father. Some records indicate her father is Carl while others indicate John. ???

FYI...Edward and Sophia are my great-grandparents and Frank G. is my grandfather.

Tom Reininger

I am recearching a Heinrich Reimer (b) 1926 in South Russia who came to Vancouver, Canada between 1965 and 1970. He, his wife Frieda Rempel and four daughters arrived from Parguay at that time.

Most of the Canadian Reimer ino I find are from Manitoba. Although the names don't match exactly what I have, many of the names you have mentioned are in my list of names.

Here's hoping we can make a match.

Cheers

Paula

Hello Mark -
Well, my great grandfather married a Jewish woman I think her name was Susanna. My father's family was fiercely protective of their Jewish heritage - in fact my grandfather, his kids (and even me and my cousins!) have been told we look very Jewish. (We're all very proud of that). As for the Reimer name, I'm not sure.

I do actually. My Paternal grandmother was a Reimer. Her grandfather was an Immigrant from Prussia and his name was Ludwig Reimer. Unfortunately all her male siblings are deceased so there is no way for Y-DNA testing. Another Man of English descent with Prussian heritage also. That is pretty neat friend.
Have you tried Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild? It is a fantastic resource. It lists everyone who came over, who they were with, port of departure and port of arrival. It takes a lot of reviewing but I was able to find my ancestors. It does not tell you the town they came from, only port of departure and sometimes occupation. It is great in helping you narrow things down.

I thought I might mention my grandparents moved from Yankton S.D. to Oklahoma to Texas. The story i was told was they were originally from Russia but moved to Germany then back to Russia before moving to the U.S. in the 1800's. With the name Reimer I was not sure about this as the name appears to be of German origin. However I have been told they could have beenn White Russian. My Grandmother's parents were teachers.

REIMER / REININGER in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin

Researching Edward Reininger and Sophie Reimer in the Milwaukee-Wauwatosa, Wisconsin area. His birthdate is believed abt 1856 and hers probably abt that time. We are not even 100% sure about her last name, but the name Reimer is a strong possibility.

Edward & Sophie had three boys named Fred, Edward C., and Frank G. and a daughter named Elsie. We're unsure of the spelling of Sophie's last name, but believe her parents may have been John and Mary. Their son, Fred, changed his last name to his mother's maiden name, Reimer. The boys were placed in an orphanage and the girl may have gone to live with relatives due to infortunate family circumstances. It is possible that Edward may have been shot and killed his wife, Sophie, but we have no proof of that.

Frank G. Reininger was born in Milwaukee to the best of our knowledge. Our Reiningers settled in the Sun Prairie, Dane County, Wisconsin area. Our ancestor is Frank G. who married Josephine Renz from that area.

Please contact us if you know of any possible conections to this family.

Thanks so much for your time and consideration of this posting!

Hi William,
My Mennonite family came from the Baltic area too. My ggggrandfather Klaas Reimer was born in 1737. I printed out some maps of the area. Very interesting the Danzig area. My father used to say we had some Dutch in us. That was when the Reimers from Germany met up with the Mennonites from Holland and married. They went on to S. Russia and later Canada. My gggrandfather Abraham Reimer and family came to Steinbach, Manitoba in 1874. My father was born there in 1915 and his family moved to the U.S. in 1923.
Sincerely,
Mary

Hi Mary
knowing your DNA is so exciting for family research ... I hit a brick wall with my father's side at 1800 Blackburn, England, but my Y-DNA results takes me back to Scandinavia and North Germany and the Baltic Region, possibly around 850AD, the time when the Saxons and Vikings were coming to Britain. I test result due in tomorrow should decide which camp I'm in.
I toured that area this summer and it's so beautiful.
Your Mennonite connection is particularly interesting ... on my mother's side I have half a dozen close 'hits' to Mennonites. Their journey to escape persecution lead them from the Baltic Region to Russia and finally the USA. My mother's family seems to have arrived in England around the late 16thC. If they were Mennonites I had no idea, they don't follow that religion today, though they do have some of their beliefs.
Its odd to think my parents' families both seem to be from that same area of Europe, went their separate ways, and met up again over a thousand years later !
Good Luck with your research.
Kind regards, William HARTLEY

Hello Amelia
if you view your Y-DNA results on this site, click on 'find paternal matches' then the link below on that page 'find smgf matches'. You can compare your results with my surname 'HARTLEY' there and see if there is a close match.
My Y-DNA results go:
CDYa 36 CDYb 38 DYS19a 16 DYS385a 13 DYS385b 14 DYS388 14
DYS389I 12 DYS389II 28 DYS390 22 DYS391 10 DYS392 11 etc etc
[37 markers in total]
the significant marker for me is DYS19a = 16 ...
Most REIMER results differ greatly from my result. Only the 'Philip REIMER > Johann Philip George REIMER [1831] > Wilhelm Johann Albert REIMER [1870] tree' seems to come close.
I'd be interested in your comparison.
Regards William
Also, as I 'm sure you are aware Henry is the American name for Heinrich and there is one Henry also.
Hi Diane,Did your Abram J. Reimer have a brother named Cornelius? Cornelius Jacob Reimer is my great great grandfather. I don't have much info on him, but his wife was Katharina Wall and his father was Jacob. His son Peter Cornelius Reimer was my grandfather b. 1895 So. Russia immig. to US in 1922.The reason I think there is a connection is because I have his personal papers and letters. Names mentioned in some of the letters are Neufeld (good friend of my grandfather) Penner and a Helena Rempel. But, they are all in German and I don't speak it.Don't know if this helps or not.Rhonda
