Hey!! I don't know exactly where the Frederick Reiser came from when he came to the U.S. in 1857, but I'm almost positive he was from the Baden/Wurttemburg area of Germany. It's in the southwestern part of the country. Your grandfather is fairly certain that Caroline Heidelberger (wife of Frederick's son Henry) was from Heidelberg.

Is your name Fred?

My grandfather's name is Gerald(Jerry)Rieser, I was wondering if he could possibly be your grandfather's brother. I think my grandfather's oldest brother was named Frederick. My grandfather is the youngest of 13 children and was born around 1939. I have also heard about a name controversy. I heard that the original spelling was Reiser and halfway through their kids they switched it to Rieser.

Reiser/Rieser Philadelphia, PA

I'm in a quandary...I've been unable to find my family history beyond my Great-Grandfather Fredrick Rieser b1893 d 1963. There is some controversty over the original spelling of my last name.

He spelled his last name Rieser, but his brother Frank Reiser b 1902 d 1983 spelled it like me.

My grandfather Frederick Reiser b 1919 d 1981 was the only one of a large group of brothers who changed the spelling to Reiser. The rest kept the Rieser surname. I'm trying to figure out which is the original spelling...I've been told different stories by different family members, and can't seem to figure it out.

Is there anyone out there related to this Reiser/Rieser clan in Philadelphia?

Ok, well, my great-grandfather had a brother named Frank, but I think he was born closer to 1900. There couldn't have been too many Frank Reisers in Philadelphia though, so there's a possible connection there.

One thing about my family - there was a "spelling" split during that generation. My great-grandfather changed his spelling to 'Rieser', but his brother kept 'Reiser'. Obviously, my grandfather switched back to Reiser, but almost all of his siblings (13 of them?) kept 'Rieser'. Thatt might give you some information in your search.

Does anyone have further info on this family? In the 1860 LA census it shows Joseph Reiser, age 39, a shoemaker from Bavaria, wife Margaret age 25, child Willhelmina Seiforth age 5, and William (?) Reiser age 3. Both children born in LA. I cannot find the family after 1860.

In the Tensas Parish, LA, land records, I also found this info: “Margaret Riser and husband,” Special Mortgage, March 4, 1857, Tensas Parish. States that “Mistress Margaret Sutton and her husband Joseph Riser, citizens of this Parish” mortgaged property at lot number one in square number twenty-six.
Re: John Reiser who married Stasia Dobrosielski

Aloha, My name is Stasia Humphrey, my mom is Mildred (Reiser) Finch. She is the daughter of Stasia Dobrosielski (actually her name was Jessie Katherine, but was known by Stasia) and John Reiser. Ben, James, Caroline are my aunts and uncles, also my mom had sisters Blanche, Evelyn (both deseased) and Shirley, also another brother, Robert. John and Stasia had 8 children total. My momma Mildred was born in Stoney Plains, Alberta, Canada, now lives in Greenwood, British Columbia, Canada. She has been wanting to research the family tree for some time and is here in Hawaii visiting me and my family so we decided to just try typing in Grandpa's name to see if we got a hit, we are very excited to hear back from you.

He was born in about 1847 and moved from Romania to Pennsylvania. He married Sophia Leopold(?) and had 5 children, Sara(My great-grandmother: remember, I'm the user's daughter), Rudolph, Abraham, Philip, and Purl(sp?). Sophia also comes from Romania, and Sara was born in Ohio, but I don't know where the others were born.
